New GPU

Recommended Posts

hello to all from Israel(sorry for my English).

I have:

q6600 2.4 ghz

2 GB RAM

9800gt 512 MB

win xp sp3

I am getting 25-32 real fps on 1280-1024 (75 hz)

all settings on max (except distance=20)

now, I would like to play on fullhd res with a new GPU that I will buy in the next month or two.

I will buy it from the US for 250$-350$

my bourd does`nt support SLI.

should I get the 4870x2 or 4870 or 9800gx2 or something else ???

please help, I want to play on the same fps on higher res for the less money.

Spaceman Spliff

Ron123,

Save your money!

This game doesn't really need a cutting-edge graphics card. All it really needs is the fastest CPU you can get your hands on.

I have a 3.6ghz dual-core CPU and have tried a couple of different graphics cards: an 8800GT (similar to your 9800) and a GTX 280 (fastest single-GPU card). The results were the exact same! Even though my GTX 280 is over twice as fast as the 8800GT, it doesn't make the game run any better at 1680X1050.

I suggest upgrading your CPU to be perfectly honest. I overclocked my CPU by 20% and got a 50% performance boost in the game! And yet going from the 8800GT to the GTX 280 did literally nothing!

I guess it was inevitable. Stick on a 5 and some morons will buy it.

Near as I can tell, the GTX 285 is a 55nm version of the GTX 280 with an overclock.

The GTX 295, however, is a dual GPU version of the GTX 260 (with 55nm) and is considerably faster than the 4870X2.

The GTX 295 will be released at $499 in January.

Guru3D already did a preview benchmark of the GTX 295.

imo the GT200 wasn't worth buying until they shrunk the die. Too many overheating problems.

I have read about the NVidia GTX series, the latest one will be costing £500. I have heard from many people that a slow CPU is a more significant bottleneck then the GPU, I have a 9800GT with 512MB of video memory, AMD AM2 6000+ (dual core 3GHz) and I have to run the game at 1280x1024 with everything else low and get around 25fps even with lower resolutions smile.gif

I know a freind with a slightly older graphics card 9600GT I think, he has a much newer Core 2 Duo 3GHz + CPU, and his game runs like a charm from what I have been told. High resolution and high details smile.gif IMO I would try getting a faster CPU. Its what I would do anyway, I had the 9800GT delivered recently expecting to run GTA4 no problem suicidal.gif I was wrong cryani.gif

don't expect a significant difference with a new GPU

you'll probably get a greater performance boost OCing the Q6600 than let's say replacing 9800GT with a 4870x2. only noticeable advantage you'd get with a new video card is one that has more than 512 vid RAM which would allow for higher res textures

Thats wierd.... I tried 280 instead of Ati 4870 and there was a huge difference. (1680*1050 - high / high)

Overall better FPS , no drops, more memory etc... Plus gtx 280 is now really cheap.

but GTA4 doesn't really do/support SLI now..

so the gtx 295 will be slower then a single gtx 280. in this game.....

the best to do now is to overclocking your q6600 to like 3.2ghz

you will see a BIG improvement..!!!!!!!!!

better then changing video card.....

go but yourself a good after market heatsink.. then overclock...
