The Belgian situation

Recommended Posts

Svip

Ah, they are at it again, those Belgians. The current prime minister have just told the King that he is going to disassemble parliament. Which would be the third time this year.

Belgium is in a large problem, because it is split between the Dutch and the French sides. And the credit crunch have hit Belgium hard as well. Their largest bank Fortis went almost bankrupt, until it was saved by parliament, but the saving didn't have the wanted effect, and thus parliament was disassembled today.

About 50% of the Dutch speaking population are for a splitting of Belgium and about 25% of the French speaking population are also for.

My prediction is that a split of Belgium is coming soon. If not in 2009, then 2010.

A little example. In flemish schools they teach you the 2 country language's wich are french and dutch (german also depending what study you chose) like it should. They also teach English. But in most Wallonic schools students learn french and get to choose english or dutch as their 2nd language. Guess what most of them pick english. icon13.gif Now english is more widely spoken in the world then dutch but these are the things wich make those 50% think the way they think. I'm not one of them btw but i do think those things are pure bullsh*t and have to stop I can think off alot more.

I speak English, dutch, french and a little bit off german.

Could be an interesting turn of events. Chalk one up self determination if it happens. What are the ramifications of such a split?

Wrong, english also.

maybe only 40% is tounge.gif

Because if we split, our economy will die.

Something tells me a tiny landlocked European country splitting in two won't do wonders for the economy.

Almost landlocked, sorry.

The said about 50% on the news (they actually said "half").

Oh and, your economy is quite dead. But you know, things will get worse before they get better.

So would Brussels be split down the middle like Berlin once was?

I think it's always a shame when a nation is split apart. But it may be for the best. It's better to have a friendly neighbour you can call upon than a ungrateful houseguest whom you spend too much time with.

So would Brussels be split down the middle like Berlin once was?

Considering Brussels is by far more French than Dutch, my assumption is it is going to be left for the French and the Dutch-speaking part find another city for their capital (graph).

But I bet that will become an issue as well for such a split, it is going to be complicated.

Well that's going to cause a lot of arguing.

I haven't even heard of these recent events! To be honest i hope there is a split, it would spice up European relations again and decrease the likelyhood of a future Euro-nation. ph34r.gif

I find it strange that this is treated as a new subject as the threat of separatism has for a long time been part of Flemish/Dutch relations. I understand from the wikipedia article on the flemish movement that it has roots in 1788. The wikipedia article on 2007 Belgian government formation article also seems very in depth on this subject. More specifically the 2007–2008 Belgian political crisis article again in wikipedia is about this story.

I see no great call for separatism from the above articles, instead just great political standoffs like the "fillabusters" in the USA or the "vote(s) of (no) confidence" in Italy that are a part of intense democratic involvement. I understand that the Flemish already have their own parliament and government under a federalist style of government. Federalism, in the US known basically as the "states' rights" discussion, is a very complex system.

I doubt separatism would create problems for the belgian economy, as Tariff borders would continue inexistent as part of the European Union, the Euro would continue as the currency of both countries, and generally all other types of agreements valid today would continue because whatever separatism exists is not without some intelligence and pragmatism.

@ Svip: why didn't you post a link to the story you found the controversy in? This I ask specifically because of the "half of belgians" survey finding.
