elljay
I read this from the Graphical Performance Readme thread Video ModeResolution scaling effects water, reflections, shadows, mirrors and the visible viewable distance. The resolution settings relate to the amount of available video memory. At 2560*1600 the game will require 320MB of video memory in addition to all the memory required for content. At 800*600 the game will require 32MB of video memory in addition to the content. Medium resolution settings are recommended for most users as higher settings are only usable if there is available video memory. Texture Quality Texture quality affects the visual quality of the content of the game. High setting for textures will require 600MB of video memory at a setting of 21 View Distance in addition to the memory taken by the Video Mode. A medium texture setting is recommended for most users. So now I'm deciding between a 1 gig or 512 mb 4870, Does the 1 gb video memory matter in this game? I'm using a 22" LCD. Follow-up question, if so, will a 1 gig 4850 be better than a 512 mb 4870(1gig vs 512mb for this game only)? Thanks in advance. creat3d22
Going only by what the readme says, to run at 2560*1600 with High textures you would need 920mb of video memory. So I would suggest you go for at least 1gb of VRAM if you can afford it. EDIT: Assuming, of course, you want to crank up the settings. For the record, my 320mb 8800gts has no problem handling the medium textures at 1024x768 and it looks better than the consoles. I wouldn't mind going higher if I could afford it though Edited December 19, 2008 by creat3d22 Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/385596-video-memory-matters/#findComment-1058782933 Share on other sites
Vicetopia
1 GB vram is helpful for other games if you play at high res (Higher than 1680x1050). And no, 4850 1 GB isn't better than a 4870 512 MB. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/385596-video-memory-matters/#findComment-1058782952 Share on other sites
creat3d22
If you've got the budget for it (500$) you might wanna wait for the nVidia GTX 295... Looks like it's gonna be a massive beast Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/385596-video-memory-matters/#findComment-1058782961 Share on other sites
elljay
Thanks for your replies. Sorry for the confusion, I'm just talking about this game because I think this game has different needs. 1gb 4850 vs 512mb 4870 in this game only. I can't afford the gtx295, even the gtx260 only. GTAGuy
The more video ram, the better. This game loves ram. If there was a video card with 2gigs of ram (2gig total and not 2 x 1gb like the 4870x2) then I would get it in a heartbeat. Just make sure you get a card with the rendering power to warrant a full gig of ram. Nothing less than a 4870 or GTX 260. Ask and ye shall receive It's still split between two cores, so the framebuffer is still only going to be 896mb... If I were to get a dual gpu video card with a framebuffer of 2gb, then the card would have to have 4gb of total memory on it, 2gb for each gpu. Vicetopia
If you're asking about a video card specifically for GTA4, I would say 1 GB is a must. I mean, 1 GB isn't necessary for the game to run, but if you're buying a brand new video card just for this game, definitely go for it. elljay
yup, specifically for GTA4. I'm leaning on the 1gig at this moment but still confused between 1gig 4850 and 512mb 4870. The hardware needs of this game is really weird. thanks for the replies.
