both detail set to low

shadows set to 0

This game streams a lot of data from you HDD so it makes sense that a defrag will help a lot. I have a 10,000RPM drive that's always defragged so I don't notice any lag or slowdowns just the occasional crash, unfortunately.

I tried defragging my GTA folder, but have yet to commit to a full defrag.

 

Although, defragging my GTA folder got me from less than 1fps to playable.

 

I shall report back tomorrow if i notice any improvement.

ANDY, were you able to start the game up in the first place?because im not sure a defreg would help me as i cant make it past the legal screen anyway. It starts up, i get the rockstar logo then i get TEXP70 error

If you believe defragging will give you much better performance, well then you been fooled. Look at all the higher graphic games and they work great without defrags! This problem is just the programming code within GTA 4!

It's not the quality that's having to be loaded, but the quantity, all 16 gigs of it. The game is gonna have an awful hard time loading all of those assets if the hdd has to keep seeking from one side of the platter to the other to get them. It may not increase your fps, but it could potentially nullify the stuttering that some people get.

you are an asshole.. defragmenting you rharddrive can always gain you some fps, not only in gta.. learn some computer basics, idiot... this has nothing to do with ps or xbox.. have to agree with you that gta 4 sucks on pc as its a bad port, though..

He is totally right. We don't even have ONE single way to really fix anything. The problem is in the game code so STFU with this stupid\useless general purpouse advices.

Find it funny, that people don't get what keeping your pc maintained is good for... simple, u stick some cds in each of your rooms in your house, then to gain access to all them cds u have to walk to each room to get them cd's, it's going to take longer than having it all together... Anyone who say's defrag your hdd, it works better, You should use a reg defrag software too... get rid of all the junk out of it and improve speed.... and also spyware, and virus scan... And before the guy's slap in with the, I don't need to do that I keep my computer clean... I am sick of fixing people's computers who think they do....

 

I do think they do the porting the wrong way round, since it would be easyier to port to the compact version of .net, but then bad coding is going to happen, since they let the bad habits set in with the programmers, should do the same thing they do in training, take over they work station and delete they work.... ( & yes they work is safe, just got to grovel for it back )

 

Also another thing, more you don't defrag the longer it is going to take....

Defragging may help some people, but it didn't help me. My computer defragged the whole hard drive in less than half an hour, but the game still goes slowly.

won't solve a game running slowly ricklamez... just improve the speed of the file access... You have 2gigs of ram or more? slowly, when allot of people are in one place, or cops on, or playing long? normally means your computer is nearly out of resources, try increasing your page filing if you have not
