Very weird sound issue

Recommended Posts

My specs:

Vista 32 bit

E8400 @ 3.00 GHz

4.00 GB RAM

8800 GT in SLi

I have the CD version not the steam one.

I maxed out all of the settings that were changeable, graphics looks great. I ran the benchmark and got 33 FPS so its very playable. During the cut scenes there were some laggy portions, but I can live with that. So graphic wise I have no problems at all.

But for some reason the outside sound does not work (ex. people talking, cars crashing, general sound). But in the cutscenes I still can hear people talking and stuff, but its just whenever I get in the game, I can only listen to the radio music, there is no outside sound. Whats the problem???

Benchmark is not the only reason sound is messing up. I have been struggling with sound issues only since the patch came out.

Issues:

1) Menu sound follows me to in-game environment.

2) Miscellaneous sounds in-game cut out or loop constantly, eg: car horns go on forever.

3) Mission cutscene movie sounds are not canceled when they are skipped but follow me to in-game.

These issues occur usually only at start up of game.

I have been dealing with this issue for days now - after having some initial success by altering the Graphics option settings, the problem is back and will not go away.

Something in the patch screwed over sound - and it is NOT the Benchmark as I have not used the Benchmark since I originally installed. [update Edit: I even tried running the Benchmark to see if i could shake it up and then restarted... no help.]

Please fix this sound bug that you included in the patch - a simple rollback would be great and then I could play the game again until you release the proper patch you are working on.

NB: I had played all the way into Chapter 4 of the Single Player campaign despite all the other bugs and crashes 'quite ok' until this damn patch arrived.

Retail version GTA IV PC

Athlon AMD 4200 @ 2200Mhz, 2 GB RAM, Nvidia 8500 GT, Audigy 24.

Win XP, every latest driver for every piece of hardware onboard. Uninstalled old drivers.

Defragged. Registry cleaned. Practically empty HD. Page File set to 3GB/3GB min/max.

- DirectX Auto Updater

- Games for Windows Live

- Adobe Flash (uninstalled, re-installed)

- C++ Redist

- Dot Net Framework v3.5+SP 1

I learned more about setting my PC system to best efficiency over the past week than I have over the last decade. I'm now at the stage of being afraid I'm going to screw my system because of the only program in the world that won't run on it.

There is a bug in the current patch that disables sound at the end of the benchmark.  Please try starting the game without running the benchmark.

Hm I did, but the problem still persists. It's as if I am listening to the radio, and everything I do has no sound effect. Like punching people and breaking the window has no sound. At some times I might be able to hear a very very soft sound effect, but its so soft I don't even know if I'm imagining it notify.gif

Please fix this!

dunno if this will help, but GTA SA (and GTA 4 for a while) had a problem where it decided to take over my speaker config when i launched it. I.E. it would mess around with my speakers and re-enable the centre speaker (which is not connected) and change my speaker config to use surround sound (I use 6.1, but essentially its 3 left and 3 right). This left me with just ambient sounds/radio playing.

Anyhoo if I open dxdiag and turn sound right down to basic acceleration it stopped it from doing it. Its real quick to do, so I suggest at least trying it.

And for some reason, upgrading to the latest G-card drivers cured it for GTA 4 - no idea how, why, but it did...
