SHOCK: GTA4 ported from PLAYSTATION 3

Of course its ported, that isn't what we are curious about, they SAID it was written from the ground up for PC, of course they would of still used the game and ported it, but what DID they re-write exactly is what we want to know.

Another indication its a port is the messages you get ingame, such as "please do not turn off your system" while saving, who turns off a computer while saving? no one, this is a console message, there are several othe messages such as this, I cannot remember where, but I do remember a VERY console specific message, I THINK it was something to do with the phone.

The game is ported from the console, as in, the map, models, sound files etc, the question we want an answer to is what parts of the physical code were ported and what was re-written, yes there will be people replying with "nothing, its a straight port, isnt it obvious" but my point is that they SAID it was re-written with the pc in mind, so WHAT was written and what wasn't, not just blind guessing and accusations.

Yeah..

i have a PS3, while playing IV i thought im playing on my PS3 and not my PC (both connected to a 32' LG Scarlet screen)

lol this reminds me of pre-release times in which people would put up fake youtube videos of gta iv for the pc. Except it would be their console hooked up to the monitor...they were onto something!!

just wondering. how many of you have made a multi million dollar game for the 360 then ported it to ps3? And then made it for pc? You might say they did a bad job but its a lot better than any thing you could do.

Speak for yourself.

I happen to be a programmer, and I would be embarrassed if I released something this damn buggy.

Furthermore, they have unhappy customers, these customers have a right to complain, thats how sh*t gets fixed, if everyone acted all pussified, and just went "Meh, they did their best.", nothing would get fixed.

The more noise they make, the more likely Rockstar is to fix it, thats how this works, I've reported several bugs to companies over the years, and nothing happened.

I complained to ATI at least three times about their drivers not cleaning themselves out properly, forcing you to use a third party tool, like Driver Cleaner Pro, or Driver Sweeper to clean up the remnants.

They haven't fixed this yet, and its f*cking annoying, but I guarantee you, if about a million people started complaining constantly about the annoyance of having to use third party software to clean up their drivers, they would get off their asses and fix it..

So I'm happy you're happy with Rockstar, but not everyone is, and until they are, they are probably going to keep bitching, deal with it. tounge.gif

Btw, this is more of a general post, than one specifically aimed at you, I just figured I would tack this on, while I was in rant mode and all.. smile.gif The first part was for you though..

i can tell you never read my 2ed post.

I can't figure out why there's still files from San Andreas mentioning Stamina, "skills", etc in the GTA IV folders when the game uses a completely different engine mercie_blink.gif

Does the game uses relevant bits and pieces from them or it's just leftovers that weren't cleaned up?

Well, it's not pixel shader 3 'cause the game uses only DirectX 9.0c, so there's no use of putting "Pixel Shader 3" there as DX9.0c is only compatible with Pixel Shader 3.0. If the game was made compatible with DirectX 9.0, there would be PS2 too.

But yeah, seems weird, they mixed both 360 and PS3 codes in a PC port. orly.gif

The game is actually ported from the Xbox 360.

How to find out? Reinstall GTA IV and don't patch the game, create a LAN game and then tell a friend or so to join your session, then open your cellphone, choose phonebook and choose his name. Choose call and it will tell you to attach your Xbox 360 headset.

Easy as pie. smile.gif

This is fixed with the newest patch so don't even bother trying it if you patched it. wink.gif

Mate, the game uses the same framework as before, just with a new engine. confused.gif

Your are all wrong biggrin.gif

Of course the PC Version it is ported from the XBOX 360 AND PS3. Easy proof? 7GB for the X360 + 7GB for the PS = 14 GB for PC, muhahahaha

devil.gif

"7GB for the PS"

Right...which is why the PS3 version is actually 10.4 GB?

Someday, people will say the game is the XBOX version.. and when we press the "P" button to enable the motion blur, is the activation for PS3 version...

You might think that's a joke, but I'd like to know how you predicted the future!

So you expect Rockstar to re-type EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF TEXT that this game has in it's GXT to find and change a few lines referencing the 360 to fit the PC? Damn then. Rockstar needs to re-type the GXT files for III, VC, SA, and Bully in that case.

Every time the game gives you help about a key(for example press shift to sprint) is re-written in the gxt files. On consoles of course it's press X(for Xbox360) to sprint.

So they did re-write the keys, they didn't leave it with the xbox360 controller keys on PC so why not remove that text on the cellphone referring to Xbox360?

No they didn't. The key's in the GXT are defined by a variable. Like for example "~g~" in the GXT could mean Y on the 360 controller or F on the keyboard to perform an action. The exe will look at what you are using, controller or keyboard, if you have redefined the key, and use the appropriate texture file for the button or key set. That stuff is easy to change as you don't have to go looking though all the text to change. Now something like small references to things like a 360 microphone are going to take a while to look for...and in the end not really worth the time looking for as they don't have an effect on the gameplay.

On a completely unrelated note, I just found these entries in mtl_convert.txt:

TARMAC

TARMAC_f*ckED

TARMAC_REALLYf*ckED

f*ckED_CONCRETE

CONCRETE_BEACH

FLOORCONCRETE

PAVEMENT

PAVEMENT_f*ckED

I like the internal names they use tounge2.gif

I bet the largest part of the game is re-used code + the property files and they build ontop off that except for the rendering 'engine' wich has been completly replaced with a newer one. Also a large part of the physics is sent to the Euphoria engine instead of a physics class inside the game engine itself.

They must've forgotten to remove some of the old property files, or the game engine might actually have classes that require those files but those classes are never used (perhaps because of the deadline not allowing them to implent it)?
