INCREASE FPS and performance

Ok, i do not know if you guys know this, for all of you who know, im happy for ya, but for those who dont, here it is: WORKS 100%:

It is very important to defrag ur PC once you install GTA. BUT, this is the catch, DO NOT defrag with default windows defragment tool.

Get Disktrix Ultimate Defrag program, download it and install it. Why? Simple,

With UDefrag, you can give priority to files you want high performance from. You select in options which folders you want placed at the exterior of the hard drive (the closer files are to the exterior, the faster they are read, the more placed togheter they are, even more faster they are read)

So what you do is select GTA IV folder in options before defraging to select high performance files and then defrag. this will put GTA files to the exterior of the HDD in a single sector, allowing the hard disk to rotate fewer times to read them resulting in a more effficient reading of the files, thus smaller load times, bigger FPS. etc.

it works, i promise you will get at least 50% increase in FPS.

If you need step by step instructons, let me know i'll be glad to put them up.

regards guys

The game runs in RAM, so having a fragged hard drive won't slow down your frame rate. However having your disc defragged may load the game a bit quicker.

My discs are defragged and the game runs fine for me.

But it's misleading to tell people they will get better FPS by defragging their drives, that's simply untrue.

i am not misleading anyone bro! with what program did u defrag?

why would i mislead anyone? im trying to help out. u probably defrag normaly, u didnt select GTA files to be high performance files. when u do that with udefrag, u place them at the exterior of the hdd were the laser rotates faster and can access them more easily, plus if they are in a single sector, the laser rotates fewer times in order to load all the files.

its a fact

I am not arguing that you can't increase load times; I'm saying that defragging your hard drive has nothing to do with your frame rate.

The game resides in your mainboard RAM and your graphics card RAM once it's loaded from the hard drive. When it's in the RAM it's not fragmented even if your disc drive is fragmented, so your frame rate does not rely on your hard drive fragmentation, period.

100% certain this wont work for me.

not gonna try it as itll rape my drives.

defragmenting will only decrease load times. not FPS nor anything else.

the problem comes in where people have been so frustrated with this game that they are starting to lash out at anybody who doesn't come up with a great solution. You should see this topic, which I'm sure you have:

the guy claimed he finally did it, and it turned out to be all he did was run in a window mode, which for many people (if not everybody) didn't really do squat.

It'll be that way until Rockstar themselves, who are the only ones who can actually fix the problems, take it upon themselves and do something about this, and then, just then we will see tolerance among us.

Udiskfrag is with out a doubt one of the most efficient defragging tools available. Using high performance prio on gta 4 folder will give you faster loading times, and better precaching... the fps increase will not be noticeable, however it will bring a more stabile fps. Especially if your HD haven't been defragged for a long time.

thx for the tip

Btw, a work around has been found for the resolution scaling problem, You can now have 800x600 settings with a much higher resolution at the same time.

Laser?

Most hard drives on the market right now are magnetic. Laser hard drives are coming though...

Who hell said this? New is Solid State, just only memories, flash.

Ok so i am no PC genius, frankly i do not know a lot about PCs but all i want to do is help out if possible.

if game runs with ram, meaning FPS will not be affected by a clean and defraged drive using udefrag with gtaiv on high performance, then so be it, i do not argue that for i do not know, all i know is that i run the game better once i did this, because this is the thing i do with all games. back a few years ago when i played Flight Simulator 2004, on my old machine i had average fps 20, after getting this advice from a friend and doing this type of defrag, my FPS went to 30-40...

anyways, for all interested here are the steps (for those who are not interested, i am sorry if this bores you):

1. assuming you installed udefrag 2008, start it. you will see a window with a huge circle in it and a bunch of data on the left.

2. enter TOOLS which is located up in the middle next to views and help. then select OPTIONS.

3. If you have more then one drive, select the drive where your GTA folder is located and below high performance select CUSTOM then SELECT FILES. leave checked below VERY FAST PLACEMENT.

4. once you open the select files page, to your right find and drag to your left your GTA IV folder.

5. click OK then OK again to return to the main screen.

6. now on the main screen just above start you have several entries (auto, volatility, recency...etc) select FOLDER/FILE NAME and go to options. check that RESPECT HIGH PERFORMANCE is enabled and press ok.

7. press start to start defragmenting.

once done, reboot your system.

Thats it.

P.S. it is advised to also put your Windows folder in high performance and page file.sys

its nice to see, that some of the players are doing maintanance (particle, but better then nothing) .. zmajster, this is very good tip to boost performance (or stability) not just for GTA, but defragmenting HDD often, will make your System runs a bit faster .. those fags, who dont even know what the operating system is and are just playing games, should buy concole, instead of abusing users, that are trying to help ^^

I'm sorry. but does this idiot remind anyone else of a mindless service representative/low life spammer? Sounds like he's trying to market a damned disc defragmenter.

TC, if I want to use that thing, which is free in the first place on your PC when you buy it, I'll just acquire it by other means, thanks.

zmajser dont bother about the people who bash you.

i used to defrag my drive with o&o defrag 10 after installing new games as I had noticed performance boost on many games especially in loading times. so i thought wtf lets try it and actually it increased my loading speed by a lot and the most important thang for me was no more problems looking at a wall and watching it being renewed with better textures.

i fired udefrag up and let it do its thing.

of course fps wont be affect by that much as when the game starts most of the data is pulled into the ram/vram but it increadibly increased the performance of rescaling building/street/tree textures which again gave me a more stable fps rate.

so either way guys try it or not no need to be bashing around as you havent tried it yet (btw. vista/xp defrag doesnt stand one bit of competition in reorganizing the hdd. these tools not just defrag the fragmented data but also assure its position as of putting a folder and all the files behind each other which again increases performance as the head doesnt need to jump around the hd)

Not quite. Usually this is true, but GTA IV (same as other games nowadays) *constantly* streams data from the HDD. So defragging really helps during the game, at least to prevent pop-ups. I don't have GTA IV yet, so I can't be sure if it really helps gaining more FPS though. It really depends on the implementation, Bioshock for example tries to maintain high FPS even if the textures aren't all loaded; it shows low-resolution textures until then. I wouldn't be surprised if it's similar in GTA IV. GTA:SA does that, too.

NecroViolator

This DeFag might help with stutters and slow loading but WILL NOT boost any FPS what so ever...

I might DeFag my 8HDs if I wanted faster loading speeds but I need more FPS... sad.gif

first of all, i am not marketing or trying to sell any product, i just said udefrag because it is the only program of this kind i personally KNOW OF!

so if you dont like what i said, skip it and dont bother to write otherwise you just make me laugh by insulting me, you show how shallow of a person you are...

thanks for encouragement to other normal people around here who understand the meaning of "willing to help out"
