Recommended Posts

I play at 1280x1024 and have 512 VRAM.

So should I use -memrestrict 1342177280?

Is that correct?

Looks about right.

Worked for me!!!

After spent five days trying everything possible...

Didn't increase fps but now I can play even when fps drop to 20 and the most important: no more freezes!!!

I use it only with -novblank.

1680X1050 - all maxed, VD 35, DD 100, TD 35, SH 8, DEF ON, Vsync OFF

Inside: 72fps

Oustide: 20-60fps (night > rain > fog > day)

Thanks for posting this fix!!! colgate.gif

charlie, why isn't this a sticky post yet, or in ur faq?

my gtaiv no longer crashes after 3 mins. thanks to this fix.

at least say it like this: "if you are experiencing fps slowdown or frequent crashes, you might want to try this possible fix." biggrin.gif

It will be added the minute I have a bit of time to ADD it. I presume you mean this fix here :-

Mkey82 pm'd me about it a few days ago and I will be adding it. We can't sticky every useful bit of information that crops up on here otherwise the first page would be nothing but stickies. That is why I am doing the FAQ if you see something that is important then PM me and make me aware of it.

Other game developers make patches instead.

Those stickies are pathetic.

Right to start off with expiorer that really isn't helpful, do you go around this board looking for every opportunity to have a dig at Rockstar Toronto and GTA 4 ?

Now I have added this fix to the FAQ and linked to this topic, you can find the post here :-

As always any comments or suggestions are eagerly accepted via pm.

For what it is worth I am unable to play this game for more than 30-45mins WITHOUT using the -memrestrict 629145600 fix for High Textures, thanks swsuk (and R* Toronto) you are legends!

I can occasionally get the RESC10 error (very very very rarely), I found that disabling the ClipCapture eliminates all crashes!

It would be nice if R* were able to address this memory leak without the use of a command line, (as IMHO the leak is still there, just we are restricting the resources it can leak into). However the current work around is good enough for me.......for now sneaky2.gif

BTW good call on putting it into the FAQ as I am sure many other people will benefit from this

I do not see why you are thanking Rockstar since this game was nowhere near ready to be released and now they are slowly patching up the game and providing workarounds. When a person pays for a game it must work out of the box without the use of additional patches or workarounds. No wonder there is so much piracy, who wants to buy a half broken game and hope for fixes to be released in the next 2-3months to patch the game up.

worked for me. i never had a memory leak until the 2nd patch (strange) but all is good now. goes great with the -availablevidmem xx command. nothing like using your 4 gigs of OCed RAM to the max icon14.gif

if I try to use the system memory the game starts to stutters.

What's your ram's frequency?

Great tweak as I have aaid before but, I've tried the command lines R* provided, and also -novblank, and it has fixed suttering but not all, any other command lines out there to get rid of the rest of the stuttering? Stuttering is my main problem, and I'd like to get rid of it, completely. This is what pisses me off. The stuttering, Algonquin has improved quite a lot with the command lines and -novblank

Previously before i had the problems with my 285s, I use the commandline -nomemrestrict to get rid of the stuttering.

If you dont really suffer from the memleak crashes give that one a try instead of the -memrestrict commandline.

Use -nolimits with it to get your options opened up unstead of -availablevidmem with it as well.

Turn off clip capture too, just found out yesterday that was one of my major problems with my new setup, not like I am short of RAM either.

Hey everyone,

Just decided to register, to post my own 'findings' here. I play on a PC - a laptop to be specific:

- Intel Duo CPU @ 2 Ghz

- 4 GB Ram (under Windows Vista 32 bits, I believe only about 3,5 of the 4 actually function)

- NVidia Geforce 8600M GT

- RealTec Audio (or somesuch)

- Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bits

Nothing too great (especially since it's a laptop), but up till now, I've mostly been able to play the games I wanted to play. With GTA IV however, I get the same kind of stuttering problem a lot of people seem to be talking about, but whichever solution (that the boards came up with) I tried, nothing works. Atm, I play the game on the very lowest settings, i.e. 800x600 resolution, all graphic options on low, the visual sliders mostly zeroed, and VSync off. The game runs quite smoothly for the first 25-30 minutes or so, after that it becomes increasingly choppy, until it's no longer playable. The weird thing is, is that usually the game becomes choppy, and after a period of about 10-15 seconds, starts running smoothly again. Then it goes back to being choppy, rinse and repeat. Either GTA IV needs a certain fix to be able to run properly on my laptop, or my laptop just can't handle GTA IV (I am hoping it is the former option, naturally). Right now, I suppose I'll shelve the game for a bit, and keep a tab on these boards for possible solutions.

hi, if your laptop has no probs playing other games, it "Should" be ok for gta4. but then again....

im experiencing the choppyness as everyone else, i think it has to be the games fault. this is my system rig and i find the constant lag spikes really crap!

I have no probs playing my other games maxed such as farcry 2, just this really sucks cahones!

Vista Home Premium 64

8 GB Samsung Ram 800mhz

Asus M3a32-MVP Deluxe Mobo

AMD Phenom Quad 9750 2.41 GHz

Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2

Samsung Spinpoint 1TB HDD

Are you saying it worked for you? It worked for me until it used up the memory I told it to use then I started seeing pop ins after that and buildings taking for ever to appear.

Yeah. The game runs smoothly the first 20-30 minutes. I don't see why my laptop would suddenly, after that time, be unable to run the game properly. But then, I am not too sure if I am affected by this memory leak that's been plagueing others. Whenever I alt-tab out of the game, my taskmanager shows me a steady 1.17 GB RAM usage for GTA. When I switch back to the game, it still stutters ...

I fixed the same issue with a fresh OS install with latest drivers.

And you're right, when the game works OK for a while it should work OK all the time. Although, maybe your CPU starts overheating, so the system throttles it down to prevent damage.

Aye, I thought about that option as well. Not sure if I want to give that a go right now though, I'm not too keen on spending another couple of hours reinstalling my entire laptop ; )

As for the overheating, I must admit that my laptop gets rather hot, but that happens with all the games I play (Fallout 3 for instance), and never, not once, has a game slowed down to an unplayable crawl. The way my GTA IV looks right now, with all graphic options turned down to low, and the resolution at 800x600, it is decidedly less goodlooking than other games I play (usually at medium settings w/ 1280x800 res). And even though my system -might- throttle down to prevent overheating, it's still weird that it runs rather smoothly inbetween periods of slowdown...

I'll see and wait. Thanks for the responses though, they are much appreciated.

No, it did absolutely nothing for me! still having the same stuttering problem from when i first enter the game. its ok indoors, but when i go out side it just lags like hell. Even tho my bench mark says im getting 40 FPS

Gotte be all your systems fault. This many people having the same issue can't mean anything LMAO. Sorry, had to say it. Well hopefully they fix this shiat soon.. i would love to actualy play the game instead of learning how to get it to work.

OK, guys, here's the proof of the fekking memory leak. This is a fairly good system and the impact of the mem leak is minor, but it's obvious it exists. And it explains the random stuttering that occurs after an hour or so.

The image is a bit long, but it's very descriptive biggrin.gif

This log has been created with Everest, with my CPU NOT overclocked and memory running at 1000MHz. All the specs are in the sig, Vista is a clean SP1 32 bit. As you can see, the initial memory footprint of my system is about 600MB. When GTAIV loads it takes up some 1GB and it goes up from there. In about one hour it uses almost 2GB and that would be the limit that one single app can use on a 32 bit OS.

When I load a savegame, the game grabs the chance to clear some of the crap it no longer needs, so it goes back to about 1GB and as times passes by it gets back to standard levels - i.e. it takes as much as it can be taken.

Note that Everest says I have 4GB of RAM at my disposal, but this is not correct, as this is a 32 bit system. I offer original log files for completeness. The first one is from a few days back, with my CPU overclocked on 3.2GHz. The second on is from yesterday and it matched the image above.

PC build my ass.
