Possible Memory Leak Fix - Worked for me

The memory limit mentioned is just for the system ram, vram is an other story.

I agree, the memory limit is / or at least is acting like its for system ram only.

However, If this is 100% the case, then why by limiting our system ram when theres clearly plenty more free

does it help fix an Out of Video Memory error / crash. Unless the error code provided by GTA is somewhat mis-informing us

just to clarify, and i realise this is probably a stupid question someone's already answered before:

i don't have any crash problems, no RESCII or whatever. after a while i just get really bad frame rates. 1) is this a memory leak? 2) will the fix in this thread help me?

i tried it out for the 3GB, if anything i think it made it worse, but it could just be me.

P.S. can a mod ban the voodooman guy? this isn't the first thread he's sh*tted.

edit:

2GB RAM

Athlon 5600 @2.8GHz dual core

Nvidia GeForce 8800GT

edit again:

I tried the command line for medium texture and it doesnt work for me. Textures starts disappearing 2 minutes into the game and after awhile, the game just froze and I have to manually end the program. Guess the problem with GTA IV is not solved yet. I hope Rockstar can give us a really big patch to overhaul and make the game what it should be from the start.

Seems to me most of the memory problems are to do with Movie Editor capturing every second of your play-time, and trying to keep all of that in memory *whilst you're also playing the game* which obviously buffer-overflows and crashes.

Turning off Clip Capture solves 50% of the problem.

Edit:

What I mean is that the game engine isn't unloading unused textures from memory as a result of bad programming. Free memory eventually runs out, then pagefile (system stutters) then crash. Blue screen, in my case.

Hey

Previously I use - availablevidmem 2.0 that multiply my VRAM by 2 ==> Play on high setting and It works but sometime I get FPS drop and crash after 1hr+ gameplay.

So I want to try this commandline

-memrestrict 629145600 (for high texture) (600MB) or - 996147200 (950 MB)

But no go.

Dont work to me , In game VRAM show only 487 MB (My VGA has 512 MB ram) so how exactly to use this commandline.

Can I use ....

- availablevidmem 2.0 -memrestrict 996147200

and set at High ? Are there will be differnt from only use - avaliblevidmem 2.0

Thank you Charmingcharlie for pointing me to this thread, the command line option for low -memrestrict 209715200 worked for me the FPS is a little lower than it used to be but at least the game now loads up for both single play and multyplay which is a huge improvement on the game bombing out during launch as it was doing earlier today so thanks again folks smile.gif

Well I've used the memrestrict trick for a few days and at first I got a few results : I could play for 2 hours.

Now that I've advanced in the game (since the leak was more pronounced as I advanced), after 15-30 minutes, suddenly the sound "disappears", ie I get the background sound, but nothing more, guns don't do sound, cars are silent etc ... And when it occurs, if I get a phone call, I can't hear anything of course, but subtitles are going super fast (like whole conversation in subtitles in 1 second).

And if I'm a middle of a mission, if there's a mid-scene, it doesn't trigger.

So, basically, I'm stuck again.

So what now ? When will there be a REAL fix ?

Not meaning to thread jack with my first post, but I kept getting that notorious RESC10 out of Video Memory message and I have a GTX 280 OCX. I found that disabling the automatic "Clip Capture" which can only located in the "Game Section" of the Menu once you have loaded a savegame or started a new game.

Out of curiosity I applied the "high textures" memrestrict fix mentioned in this post to my command line so it read

-memrestrict 629145600

Combining this command line with disabling the "Clip Capture" Elminated all of my crashes to the desktop, however the command line introduced a new quirk.

Sometimes the shaddows go very odd as in instead of casting a shadow over the pavement and the cars and Nico everything would turn to a solid black unless I panned the camera around, removing the command line resolved this issue.

I'm not sure if it is of any use by my system is as follows.

Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9770

4GB of DDR3 (2x2GB)

P5E3 Motherboard

BFG GTX 280 OCX graphics card

Creative Labs X-Fi

NEC 24WMGX3 LCD monitor

XBox360 game pad.

Kind Regards

John

Copy & Paste from my thread which was closed, because huge pile up threads are so much better ...

"Hey,

After my upgrade I was seeing a lot of RESC10 errors, out of video memory. I found a fix which was to add "-memrestrict 629145600" to a commandline.txt on High texture quality. Before I added this, Windows reported a crashing ram usage of -15xxxxx, some random high number, after I added this commandline windows reports -1 when it crashes. I don't have time to test it right now but shouldn't I be able to fix it by lowering the memrestrict number by a few hundred, because now it seems to crash because it goes over the video ram limit by 1."

And I refuse to disable clip-capture because I use it several times every time I play.

Unfortuantly Sethos the clip capture is bugged as it does not free up system resources so even with the memrestrict "work around" things will eventually grind to a crash to the desktop halt!

I hate to sound like I am being a troll, but this game feels really poorly tested, I've not had this game that long (since Christmas), but I have been having so many crashes and have enounctered quite a few annoying bugs (such as the game taking forever to load unless you use the -novblank command line, but then that introduces graphical problems (z-flighting, shaddow flicker and tearing etc).

I'm happy with how the game runs now, but I still have to wait a considerable amount of time to load a game and cannot use the clip capture (I want to record my stunts so it is really annoying not having this feature).

RockStar

Do you have an ETA for the next patch?

It would be nice if you could keep us all updated as there are quite a few end users experiencing one issue or another.

Thanks

Kind Regards

John

Just wanted to say that this fix worked and fixed my memory leak problem entirely. No more stuttering at ALL for me. Thank you so much for posting smile.gif!

I recommend everyone to try this. If you experience memory leaks this WILL fix it.

This topic deserves a bump too, one of the best fixed for this game ever smile.gif.

Open Notepad and type in on of the commands depending on what quality of textures you want. So it looks like this:

-memrestrict 629145600

Now save the file as "commandline.txt". Now ut and paste the file in the folder you installed GTA IV in (usually its "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV").

That's all you have to do to get commands working.

After a post on this forum, I was contacted by R* Torronto

I sent them a lot of info, such as DXdiag reports, screenshots, FPS benchmarks and detailed descriptions of how I was getting a RESC10 error

even when using the games Auto Detect settings.

I just wanted to let you guys know that the PM sent back to me has worked, from regular crashes sometimes every 15 minutes

others it could take an hour however Ive just played for a solid 4 hours (including Alt Tabbing out to take some screenies for another post)

Note : I dont use ANY other command line options

-memrestrict 629145600

(for high texture)

-memrestrict 314572800

(for medium) * This is the one im using and so far so good

-memrestrict 209715200

(for low)

Im now enjoying the game, Framerate could be alittle better but ive found my settings sweet spot

2560X1600

Medium Textures

High Rendering

Everything else at 60

Except Shadow Density (not working on sli so I set to 0)

FPS can drop to mid 20's but the game is still smooth

The difference I notice is how they have formatted the values compared to other posts.

Please dont flame if it doesnt work for you guys, but it sure as hell did for me ! No more RESC10 crashes, infact no more crashes unless I push the graphics settings too high

Ive yet to see any textures disapear either... as a test I run the game without any settings (same level of detail) It lasted 20 mins

I restarted with the above settings and all was fine !

thanks !

-memrestrict fix all my problems cause game some time just shutters for a bit but now it's gone you are my savior !

I played some GTA4 when it came out and tried several fixes after the patch screwed up not so good but playable performance on high, now i had a break and came back to it to see that there is still no patch and tried this commandline given by OP, and its by far the best and easiest to aplly tweak there is, atleast for me.

I play on medium and use the line provided for medium, i use it along side with -novblank, not that the last one gives any performance boost but the loading times are simply 3-4 times faster if not more.

Ive never had memory leaking but i did had pop ups and therefor i tried several things, many of them removed pop ups, what occured especially hard after long play time, but also all of them made game stutter after some play time.

The OP given line removes all pop ups even after 3h gametime and do not slow down game.

So i confirm that this works and is by far the best there is, no need for all the cache programs and hardcore tweaks.

  • 2 weeks later...

Heh, this 'tweak' actually removed the stuttering for me. I increased the resolution to 1600x1200 as well. For some reason this game works better at higher res than lower for me (even before the tweak).

Though after this tweak I have noticed that the frequency of missing textures and objects suddenly appearing/disappearing has increased than before it (on a 512MB card). I have 6GB system ram so how this tweak makes the game run better on limited ram usage is just.. mind blowing? suicidal.gif

I hope this will work bored.gif

I tried everything to remove that f*cking freezing but not this. I'll try it and send feedback.

This tweak worked for my 285s, never had the problem before with the 8800 Ultras.

I messed round and fine tuned the numbers given by R* Toronto to increase my FPS a little too.

This tweak does not work for me.

I still have freezes or laggs after playing up to 45 min. Then it starts to lagg and I must restart the game or PC.

That's driving me crazy and I don't know what I can do anything.
