Sorry for being a n00b, but how do I put the command line into the game? Like right clicking and going into properties and pasting it there or anything? Please help.

Sorry for being a n00b, but how do I put the command line into the game? Like right clicking and going into properties and pasting it there or anything? Please help.

Make a notepad text file called commandline.txt and save it in GTA IV directory , and type commands in there , they should work ingame that way , worked for me.

Another n00b question: would it make sense to use "-memrestrict 629145600" when you have a 1Gb cart even if you are just using medium textures?

Memrestrict didn't do anything for me, the only thing that made any difference and stopped GTA IV from crashing to desktop after running out of RAM was MemTurbo 4. I have 4GB DDR3 RAM and GTA IV uses all of it up after a few minutes of play. It never used to do this on my last system config and the main difference is that I used to use Windows 7 Home X64 and now use Windows 7 Pro X64.

If I don't use Memturbo 4, GTA IV goes from 50 fps to a stutter in about 5-10 mins and then crashes. If I use Memturbo I can play GTA IV for a long time with no crashes or problems.

Sorry for bumping up this old thread. But out of curiosity, does this problem still exist after the release of the new patches? I'm sorry but my card still hasn't returned from RMA to try this out.

That will depend on who you speak too, some will say the memory leak was fixed and others will say it hasn't been fixed. I recently replayed GTA 4 after buying it for the price of a bacon sandwich off steam and I noticed without the memrestrict command there were memory leaks and massive frame rate drops all over the place (to single figure fps). Once I used the memrestrict command the frame rate drops disappeared and it became a smooth game again......... well as smooth as GTA 4 can be. So I would say the memory leaks haven't been fixed if anything I got the impression they are worse now. I remember when GTA 4 first came out I was able to play it all the way through to 100% and didn't use any command lines, I cannot make that claim now.

Thanks. I'm confused with one thing. Is it enough if the memrestrict command is used in the shortcut on the desktop or should it be placed in the commandline.txt too?

It doesn't really matter whether you use the memrestrict command in the shortcut or as part of the commandline.txt, it should work either way you do it. I personally use it as part of the commandline.txt and I have a desktop shortcut which I can click on to edit the commandline without having to go directly to the GTA 4 install folder. I have to do this because sometimes I like to play my games windowed and I guess it was just too much work for Rockstar to put a "windowed" option in the graphics menu sarcasm.gif

I can tell you that i never had one until that stupid patch and i tried all patches.

Also, none of the suggestions to fix the problem like memrestrict, reservedapp which added this patch or higher/lower settings didnt help me. Also not memory cleaners programs, and i got 4GB RAM 1333mhz.

Thank you both.

@astrix: if i sell my current dual core and 9500gt 512(returning from rma),

and get 965 BE/1055T and HD 5770 Hawk 1GB, 4gb ddr3, will i be able to get the game to run fine at [email protected] texture and high quality settings for at least two hours continuously?

Yes, with pop ins, at least in my case.

There are some people with these specs who have problem with performence and have no pop ins, or they have both, or their game is fantastic, each person with his problems. all i can say that you could without any of these problems on 1.0.0.4. i had dual core with 9500gt 512mb before and i know what you are talking about.

With these specs all the games will look wonderful and will run smooth but GTA IV is a bit of a problem, you can always run him without problems and pretty smooth on reasonable settings but you need a spaceship to run it on max high.

No problem if it runs at med-high and I'm used to seeing pop-ins as I've played San Andreas a lot. I guess I'll get the new rig then. Thanks for your help bro.

A common thing that people usually recommend is that instead of 5770 a 5870 is highly recommended. i dont know why but obvious that he is better and if you got the money you should get it instead, it will be much better. i bought 5770 because he is pretty new, good for my will to run GTA IV in some possible way... also he is cheaper than most good GPU's that available these days.

Well, 5770 is the max I can get out of my budget. I'll lower some settings to get smooth gameplay. BTW, which patch should I install once I get the game?

Patch 6 causes major stuttering but probably has the best shadows, but then Patch 7 reduces the FPS drop on the mission "Sexy Time"

I'd probably go for Patch 7.

Patch 7? I had thought that the 1.0.6.0 was the latest.

After a post on this forum, I was contacted by R* Torronto

I sent them a lot of info, such as DXdiag reports, screenshots, FPS benchmarks and detailed descriptions of how I was getting a RESC10 error

even when using the games Auto Detect settings.

I just wanted to let you guys know that the PM sent back to me has worked, from regular crashes sometimes every 15 minutes

others it could take an hour however Ive just played for a solid 4 hours (including Alt Tabbing out to take some screenies for another post)

Note : I dont use ANY other command line options

-memrestrict 629145600

(for high texture)

-memrestrict 314572800

(for medium) * This is the one im using and so far so good

-memrestrict 209715200

(for low)

Im now enjoying the game, Framerate could be alittle better but ive found my settings sweet spot

2560X1600

Medium Textures

High Rendering

Everything else at 60

Except Shadow Density (not working on sli so I set to 0)

FPS can drop to mid 20's but the game is still smooth

The difference I notice is how they have formatted the values compared to other posts.

Please dont flame if it doesnt work for you guys, but it sure as hell did for me ! No more RESC10 crashes, infact no more crashes unless I push the graphics settings too high

Ive yet to see any textures disapear either... as a test I run the game without any settings (same level of detail) It lasted 20 mins

I restarted with the above settings and all was fine !

do i put this in a commandline.txt ?

Are there any other workarounds besides the commandline and alt+tab'ing? Alt+tab'ing seems to work, but it really breaks the immersion since I have to do it every 3 minutes or so.

GTA IV have too many and unnecessary visual effects like bloom, lights and others, who are unoptimized and heavy.

Also, too heavy Lods images and overdosed with unnecessary objects (it's enough one or two dumpsters but why 4 or 5?!).

-memrestrict and-reservedApp work but not 100%.

Everyone who want smooth performance should use some mods or to make his own mod, vanilla IV is bad looking and horrible ported for pc.

https://github.com/abbodi1406/vcredist/releases

Obrigado.
