Without taking anything away from this thread (there needs to be more and stickied to be honest) thought Id link to mine with more tweaks etc for both Vista32 & XP32 if they are of any help to anyone, also added backup game saves etc and a shed load more bits & pieces.

 

This isnt a hijack just a helpful link to a like minded thread to help others if it can

I wanna do just the opposite. I think that the shadows look like sh1t with the 1024*768 res I have to play with. So is it possible to do this thing in opposite way so that I would have the shadow and reflection quality of for example 1680*1050 resolution while using really 1024*768 res.

No, but everyone who reads the thread and see everyone clamoring about a their performance boost just leads to false leads, especially when these boosts are people giving generalized gains without any benchmarked means (not the in-game benches, using something else like FRAPS' or whatever you have). But the fact is, not everyone is getting these benefits as I've said. Its a thing to try, but odds are, you won't see your game get a boost.

 

I won't break down posts to get my point across as I think I've got it done at this point. I'm not trying to single you out, I'm just trying to get the facts for those who need it out there so we won't have a forum full of false positives.

 

The thing about the trollish was asking punisher.ita to leave. Sure its not as bad as when he told people to die for whatever reason, but it does not serve anyone any good to retort back telling someone to leave. Especially when that person is misinformed or just doesn't know any better.

Let me talk about my results.

 

The tweak worked, i set it, but after several tests, i find it didnt changed anything in fps terms.

 

Before this tweak, i replaced the shaders folder with the Ati10 folder (im on vista 64). This gave me the best stable and good frame, its steady on 35 frames, very very stable on it.

 

Also i put the lowaudio command line parameters. This alone done well too, as i use only onboard audio.

 

My specs

 

vista 64 ultimate

e8400 @ 3ghz

4gb ddr2 1066

8800gt 512

This needs to stay on topic and people need to provide proper evidence for and against the trick, simple as.

I am going to do further tests in the data filed tonight to try and do similar without the hassle of the OP's method. The idea itself does stand up and memory saving is what it will achieve, so in theory it will work.

The benchmark itself isn't the best for irrefutable proof either though as it doesn't prove details of texture or pop up fixes etc.

 

Sometimes taking the word of the person posting will have to do, would be nice if they explained it objectively though.

We also need a R* haters sticky so people can vent and leave the rest of the forum for useful topics. It would probably provide some good humour too.

My VGA = x1900xt 512MB

 

Run the game with commandline 2.0 so i have room to set the game as i want, with 800x600 reso. Apply. VidMem Results - 685/478. =>478MB it's the real VRAM the game detect of my x1900xt

 

 

Im not 100% sure but the first post says to run it completely without commandline tweaks, set reso to 800x600, and use the sliders at their max on this current reso, do not try to increase your vram to 700 when infact you have 512.

Set the max you can with 800x600 and default vram value, and then go make commandline file and tweaks.

 

Atleast thats how ive understood it, but im home in few hours so ill post if it changed anything for me, to im more than confident that in my case CPU is the bottleneck, not really bothered since i run most games near 100fps maxed settings, never tried crysis since i just couldnt be arsed back then. Dont know why i waste time with GTA4

Just tried it,

Used 960x600 settings, settings: all low -->217MB usage.

availablemem set to:220MB -->217/220MB usage.

Force 1280x800 ->play.

Resolution is forced and it's still set at 217/220MB, so i guess it works.

However FPS is still CRAP!!!

If your CPU is limiting your FPS, then this fix wont do anyything. However, if its your GPU slowing you down, it appears to work.

 

My 4870 doesnt perform any better at 800x600 or 1680x1050, so my e8400 is limiting me for sure, even though its at 3.6Ghz

I noticed that even going from 3.8 to 4 with my Quad still gained, just got to push as high as you can or feel comfortable with I guess.

Wish I had a tank of Liquid Nitrogen handy.

I'm using a 640x480 reflection map though.

This is the benchmark. Ingame this means average FPS <30 and dips into the low 20's/high 10's. That just sucks. Moreover I can't begin to imagine how crappy the 640x480 shadows resolution must look. Overclock your CPU man, it's definitely the best way to improve performance.

Actually in game it still averages 30~35ish, which is good enough for me. It never drops below 25. and the shadow res is looking fine as well. It's already clocked at 2.9Ghz, like i said before.

Your trick is great mate! It gaves me a fps boost and it looks quite better now because the reflection are less coarse.

I gained about 3-6 fps depending on the situation.

omg!!!!!! i used to run this sh*t in 800x600 just to maintain a 20+ fps... I now run 1280x1024!!!!! Ofcause it comes below 20 fps sometimes... but before this fix, i ran 1280x1024 with an avg fps of 10... true story

I found a better way to fix textures

add this to commandline :

-availablevidmem 3.0

 

And no dissapearing textures , full textures , no bug with textures !!!!

 

But you must use a Medium or Low quality because of high game crash to windows
