btw before the patch i ran game on High textures with 512MB 4870 809/490 shown in game, red warning ofcourse, could play for hours with no problems and game looked ok and fps was same as with medium

Exactly same performance was with medium/High or medium/medium so ofcourse i used High.

With medium it took longer to load textures, meaning if i turned around it took little time to load them, with high they were instant.

 

 

Now after patch there is stuttering and losing textures , well lets say after 30min gameplay and i need to restart game. With medium it works same as before, so the patch screwd me over. By same as before i mean long time to load textures and pop-ups.

Read, it differenced on all systems. And i doubt you can run IV nice @ 3.0GHz. I have 3.2GHz and i only have 15FPS outdoors.

hmmm... i have intel core2duo @ 2.0 Ghz and GTX 260, and 3GB RAM.

 

and I get 10 - 22 FPS outdoors.

Lol a 2 ghz dual core really holds back that 260 GTX. Also ur CPU holds back this game. Overclock it ffs! I bet you can go to 3 ghz.

I'm using a 640x480 reflection map though.

This is the benchmark. Ingame this means average FPS <30 and dips into the low 20's/high 10's. That just sucks. Moreover I can't begin to imagine how crappy the 640x480 shadows resolution must look. Overclock your CPU man, it's definitely the best way to improve performance.

There is some strong connection between detail level and draw distance a it seems. I kept my dl on 50 and dd 40. It gave me huge pop-up on high-textures but a rather high framerate. I'll try lowering details today and see what happens.

As i said before patch it was really great at High settings. Ive never had any crash nor error , at start i only had BSOD

But that was caused the well known Sapphire 4870 bad BIOS, since i bought this video along with GTA4 it tiook me few days to figure it out. Updated BIOS and then it was ok.

No errors now aswell, had one crash where GTA4 exe stopped working but this was after i set priority to high for GTA on Task manager.

 

if i go back pre-patch state, can i still play MP, or do i need to be on same version?

 

I'll also try this method described by OP once i get home from work.

 

The whole game is really weird, since it ran 300MB over my vram limit np at all....

Yepp, overclocking was the solution for me too. Although this sounds interesting I don't need it.

 

I have an average system: I overclocked my CoreDuo E6600 from 2400 to 2970 MHZ which is no problem with a good cooling system (no water cooling required for this speed though) RAM is still at 800 MHZ because it's from MDT and not THAT fast. And I overclocked my 8800 GTS 640 with ExpertTool (GPU, Memory, Shaders) each by around 10%-15% (550,1650,1300)). At all settings at HIGH / MAXED I get 30-40 fps outdoors.

 

I really enjoy that game now.

I tried this and then did the more technical version of doing it in the data files and to be honest I never got anything substantial as results.

It may work for some but for others like myself it made no difference at all.

I even set the reflections to be 10 times larger or smaller than my current resolution and it had no real effect on performance.

 

I may be at the end of the scale where performance has pretty much peaked but getting extra FPS is always a win.

 

Still give it a go though, nothing ventured nothing gained.

You can actually skip all the nonsense and set the game to 800x600, start the game at the same time, then go back and set your desired resolution. The game still has the 800x600 textures, only your in a new resolution. If you get a boost off that then its probably the video card holding you back in some way.

Now, I don't know how diligent about testing are they in comparison to you, but they seem to be rather satisfied. And this is perfectly reasonable, has the game is obviously flawed and there may be various hardware dependent tweaks which will work for some and not for others.

 

Like pinky said, no pain no gain, if you don't try you can't possibly hope to gain anything.

I never experienced any gain but people with lesser cards may as this could save possible memory space that is more vital to their performance.

To say something does not work just because it doesn't work for you personally is not wise.

i just tested this tweak and observed no performance increase, but more flickering on buildings.

settings: 1440x900 high highest 40 100 30 16 get ingame fps 20-30

 

i have 1gb vidmem and set the commandline to 0.79 to observe no change in resolution when i set the commandline, so res was 1440x900, in settings 800x600...as i said, no difference, still 20-30

It actually worked for me because of my former settings:

 

I played the last hours with 800x600 resolution and everything else on low, except vehicle density.

it really ran smooth.

 

Thanks to this guy, I can play now with the same settings and as smooth as it was but now with 1280x800 !

I think people misunderstood the meaning of this tweak. It isn't to make your game run faster on higher settings, it's just for running higher resolutions with worse quality, because resolution is the no.1 quality setting. at least for me. i prefer playing in high-res without any effects/big view distances at all, than playing 800x600 with everything on high. this tweak made that possible, while R* didn't implented this.

This fix doesn't help much, if any. If you want a performance boost, download a crack for the game. It removes the securom crap and adds a some fps, which are very welcome on "slow" pcs.

Hey, this tweak it's a pretty nice idea. But i can't get working. I mean the part when you have to lia IV that you're running at 800x600 but you're not because you forced reso via commandline.

 

I've remake the guide like 5 times now, i do everything, but when i'm gonna force the reso (having calculated the vram with 800x600), yeah i clearly see it's forced, but in the options menu it says the reso i forced, not 800x600, so that means im not doing it right, right?

 

What i did.

My VGA = x1900xt 512MB

 

Run the game with commandline 2.0 so i have room to set the game as i want, with 800x600 reso. Apply. VidMem Results - 685/478. =>478MB it's the real VRAM the game detect of my x1900xt

 

Then i quit the game and do some maths. 685/478 = 1,43. So i use 1.5 as multiplier, wich gives me 478 x 1.5 = 717MB

 

Now i create my commandline with this:

 

-width 1280 -height 960 -availablevidmem 1.5

 

Then i run the game, starts ok, clearly at 1280x960, but when i see the graphic options in the game menu, its says 1280x960, and the vidmem used painted in red and surpasing those 717MB i made available(cause i calculated for 800x600).

 

 

So, what am i doing wrong? The game doesn't believe what i'm saying to him. The lie part has something wrong. Please help, i really want to try this.

And thats why I specifically said in parenthesis, "at least in our situations it doesn't." I'm not making a blanket statement. For those that this works for, great! I wish I had the same improvements as you guys! But it should be known that this does not work for everyone. It doesn't hurt to try, but there are people in this thread who have mentioned or shown that it doesn't work for them, hopefully giving their specs along with it. Now if everyone went ahead and did decent benchmarks, we could have a much better view on this rather than a guesstimate of x-y fps gain.

 

I'm not backing anyone up on this. I just want people to know some basic facts. The trick works for those who actually will see a huge gain using the low resolution textures (be it old video cards or whatnot). But for those that actually have decent game performance or do not see any gain from playing at 800x600, this won't help much at all.

 

And yeah, the guy you were replying to was acting too trollish (you're guilty of it too in some ways), but you can't just say everyone is getting a benefit when it really isn't the case.

My commandline.txt (which goes in gta4 folder) is totally ignored by the game as are any parameters I add on shortcuts.

 

If my settings are 800x600 thats where they will stay. Anything in my commandline.txt is just ignored.

 

On vista, steam version.

 

What is wrong?!
