15 FPS is about 30% of what you should be getting, so there is a major conflict going on there.

How fresh is the OS installation? Are you sure you installed all drivers that are available for your hardware? I've seen people in the same situation that had some motherboard driver missing. Did you check the temps for overheating? Are you using any commadline switches?

I've gone through and updated every driver I have. Temps are OK, and there's no commandline switches. And the machine is only 3 months old, so the OS is pretty fresh.

I'm baffled. I mean, Crysis runs at 45 FPS on High on my machine, yet this horrible PC port does not. This makes me sad on the inside.

Mkey, if you have a suggestion...?

I have a sh*ttier graphics card than you (GTX 285), a sh*ttier processor than you (AMD Phenom 9850 2.5 ghz x4) and RAM that runs slower than yours (1333mhz at 4GB) and I'm getting better framerates than you.

I'm not sure if that makes a difference, though, and Crysis runs beautifully on my machine too, but Crysis wasn't as graphics-intensive as this game. The days of "This game doesn't look as good as Crysis" are long over. GTA IV is running higher texture resolutions, higher shadow resolutions, longer draw distances, and better looking shaders than its console counterpart. Hell, GTA IV for the PC took two DVD's, the console versions took one.

Also, Crysis occludes a lot of detail through foliage blocking unless you use the Ultimate tweak for the game, and then watch as Crysis runs worse than GTA IV.

Bob, thanks for trying. I have been down that avenue before. It helped slightly.

Mkey, I've already moved on. I am now Oblivion's bitch.

Neil, I'll probably just uninstall and start from scratch. If the problem persists, I'll sell the game to some unfortunate child down the street.

Big Gulps, eh? Well, see ya later!

I'm still trying to figure out what's going on with your game performance. Are you sure you're running on the latest patch and everything? Did you try downloading the latest patch (patch 7) manually from Rockstar's website?

It's just weird considering I'm not even running the vanilla version of GTA IV, I downloaded TWELVE gigabytes worth of "additional ultimate resolution" textures, and I have ENBSeries enabled which tosses in SSAO (realistic shadow rendering with ambient occlusion) and I'm getting framerates around 25-45. You shouldn't be getting anything less than me. And I'm running on 1920 x 1080 resolution.

Not to mention a gigabyte's worth of high resolution custom vehicles (so high res that when you're sitting in the back of a taxi, you can see the crevices in the seat and when you sit in a sports car, you can read the P / R / N / D / D1 / D2/ S1 text on the gears and the numbers on the speedometer clearly.

There's something up with your set up, I just can't figure out what it is yet. If anything, I should be getting less frames than you're getting.

Try setting the CPU affinity only 4 CPU's(its actually cores but M$ thought it better to be confusing). San Andreas has a problem like that with multi-core CPU's. If you didn't set the affinity to one CPU, the game would act weird. That's just a shot in the dark, but you seem to be desperate. I have no idea ho the game acts with 6 core CPU's or if it even tries to use more than 4 cores. I have no experience of any kind with 6 core CPU's actually.

Edit: Here's a thread about GTAIV and problems with the 6870 on the Rage3D forum: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33970150 And the person who started that thread has the same CPU as you too.

Is your RAM at stock settings(another shot in the dark)? Maybe try setting them there if not.

good day, i have a question mr

is it normal that i have now texture loading problems with this fix?

im not going to lie, it works really great, there is a performance of 10 and up fps, but i get this texture loading problem, like when im not looking at some part, the textures of that part go away, and when i turn around and see, there are no texctures for 1 second and then they appear (not all at the same time) so it kinda sucks but its ok, for now im not using it because of that, i was looking at this thread and i didnt see someone with my problem, any ideas?

thanks

One of the patches (1.0.0.4 or 1.0.4.0) made this obsolete. Certain settings that were added(I forget which) do the equivalent of what this does.

Yeah this thread really should be deleted to avoid any more confusion with future members, I think.

yeah? which ones?

Ones including myself, I spent about 30 minutes going in and messing with the vram multiplier running GTA IV 1.0.4.0 and it kept changing back and even tried to delete my settings folder and all that stuff.

And I'm also posting wondering if it is in fact patch 1.0.4.0 that makes this obsolete, I have an i7 930 and 5870 and with enb enabled with everything on "High" and with most of my bars at around 1/2 my game will studder every 10 seconds or so and I was really hoping that this would fix it. If my version does in fact already fix this then I suppose I will try lowering my bars a little more but man, I sure was hoping this would work!

Hi, didn't want to start a new thread for this, so imma say it here.

Not long ago, i installed windows xp black edition to my other partition, and in the bigger partition i have my trusty windows 7.

I've been doing some overclocking recently, and got veeery nice fps out of gta iv in windows xp. biggrin.gif

Now the thing i want ya'll to see, is the difference between xp black edition and windows 7 performance.

My graphics card is running on both window's with

[email protected] 800mhz

[email protected] 2000mhz

[email protected] 1020mhz

Also my C2D e4500 (which stock speed is 2.2ghz) is running at 3.2ghz,

and the 2gb's of ddr2 (stock 800mhz) are running at 967mhz.

Aalright, let's see the numbers...

In Xp black edition it looks like following:

Statistics

Average FPS: 50.10

Duration: 37.15 sec

CPU Usage: 93%

System memory usage: 76%

Video memory usage: 78%

Graphics Settings

Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz)

Texture Quality: Medium

Shadow Quality: Medium

Reflection Resolution: Medium

Water Quality: High

Texture Filter Quality: Anisotropic x8

Night Shadows: Off

View Distance: 22

Detail Distance: 40

Hardware

Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Service Pack 3

Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512

Video Driver version: 266.58

Audio Adapter: SB X-Fi Audio [0001]

Intel® Core2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz

Pretty good fps, looking at the specs huh? sly.gif

Now the Windows 7 (with sp1 that i just installed)

Statistics

Average FPS: 34.15

Duration: 36.98 sec

CPU Usage: 97%

System memory usage: 84%

Video memory usage: 77%

Graphics Settings

Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz)

Texture Quality: Medium

Shadow Quality: Medium

Reflection Resolution: Medium

Water Quality: High

Texture Filter Quality: Anisotropic x8

Night Shadows: Off

View Distance: 22

Detail Distance: 40

Hardware

Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate

Service Pack 1

Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512

Video Driver version: 266.58

Audio Adapter: Speakers (Creative SB X-Fi)

Intel® Core2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz

remember that the processor is running rly @ 3.20ghz

So, all the same settings and that much performance difference? suicidal.gif

On xp, it also plays very smooth in gameplay, about 35-50fps . Never thought i would

be seeing such fps on this system in gta ever.

I'm sure it would be a lot better in win 7 if i had like 4gb's of memory, but still

it's usage is increased by only 8% in win 7.

Cheers. cool.gif

Hello.

I am having a problem with this tweak .

I set the game on 800x600 and now i am using 298/1007 MB

So my Target line should be :-height 1024 -width 1280 -availablevidmem 0.295 Right ?

When i get in the game the resolution is changed to 1280x1024 and am i overusing my memory(the red text )I can't get more draw distance so the mem is limited i think .

My specs :3.2GhZ single core Intel ,2GB RAm,Nvidia GT240.

Please help me smile.gif

"I've tried everything I've come across, and there has been nothing that fixes this lack of performance and textures."

textures have to do with the ram, in my limited observation. i say that because i used to use those commandline things, and stopped because i would be running around in mp/tbogt and stuff would start disappearing, especially around lynch street station. talk about the worst time for stuff like that to happen. anyway, because i swapped out my bfg gtx 285 to get ready for summer, i installed my evga 9600gso that has 1.5gb. everything was fine until i got to where? you guessed it, lynch street station. so disconnected my acer 24" (would have done it anyway for the same reason i swapped out the gtx 285), and connected the Mitsubishi 15". problem pretty much solved, but i just swapped the pny 1gb 9800gt in, because the frame rate was still smoother than the 9600gso.

either its the ram on the card, the system, or the power supply is too weak for gaming

This trick worked for me but how do I stop the game from reseting the resolution to my screen rez?

Also if you look at the graffics settings acidently just press back realy fast and you will get out.

Hell, GTA IV for the PC took two DVD's, the console versions took one.

Just a heads up, but that's not anything new, ALL GTA's for PC took 2 discs(Except for SA-it is the ONLY PC version that only had 1 disc)-If you remember back to GTA III, remember, it too had 2 discs-one is the Install disc and the other is the Play disc-same goes for VC. IV too has an install disc and a play disc. So, this is definately not new nor is it different than other PC GTA's. The reason Consoles have only 1 disc, is cause they DO NOT require you to install the game before playing-it is just pop the disc in, load, and play. Which requiring people to install the game onto their consoles would not work at all, as the the X-Box 360 Arcade model only has 256MB hard drive(which is not anywhere near enough space for a game) and consoles like PS1 and PS2 do not have a hard drive(they require memory cards that are only 8MB, 16MB, or 32MB-again cannot install a game on that), same for PSP(the largest memory card I have seen for that was 16GB). Just a friendly heads up/my 2 cents on that part.

I wrote and posted some code yesterday that automatically takes care of the settings files and then loads the game! You can find the code here. I am trying to decide what else I should add to the program?

EDIT

Somehow i got it to work,at 1280x960,fps above 30(before fps was 25fps~),no more pop ins and was it supposed to be pixelated?

I added:

-height 900 -width 1440 -availablevidmem 0.694

and this is what i got...the settings don't show 800x600 although that is what i had before having those commands...but everytime the resolution jumps to that...

Turn ALL in-game settings to LOW and that will bring the resource usuage down A LOT, and thus you willl be under the 694MB it says is the maximum...the game looks darn good on LOW settings and gets great fps...so, this WILL fix your problem(unless you have an illegal game version)?

It is pretty much common sense that if the resource usuage is too high, that means the settings are too high and thus would mean you need to lower them. No offence, but it IS pretty common sense...? confused.gif

Isn't it obvious? The height and width commands are automatically setting your resolution to that, just look at the similarities of the numbers.

Take out '-height 900 -width 1440' and the res settings should be normal again.

I tried it... Did everything said in here and it didn't work. I changed the available video memory so it was exactly for my settings, and it worked, my graphics resolution is at 800x600 but I can't get the "-width" or "height" to work so it will stay at 800x600, and if I work it the widnowed way... by expanding the window I get a terrible graphic corruption in the lower part with some wierd lines. Please reply to this message. I have 1Gb RAM and I am running it from steam...

This performance tweak is completely obsolete on the latest patch because you have the ability to change the resolution of reflections & shadows in the graphics menu..

All this method did was attempt to save performance by keeping the reflections & shadows at a low resolution (because at the time they scaled with resolution), but now it's completely customisable.

Yes that would help a lot... I noticed too late my comment was two years later, and actually I haven't found how to do it in the latest patch... Well anyways thanks and my game is running better now after trying some other tweaks.

You'll get the same effect by turning water quality and reflections to "low" on the latest patch. wink.gif

is this the case with the Version 1.0.4.0, too. The latest Patch is the 1.0.7, i guess.

I tried to change some settings but there are never big changes in the fps. I can go down to 800x600 and low setting and have maybe 2 fps more then 1920x1080 and medium setting with my x2 5000+.

Usually i have 10-25 fps which is to few for me.

All the threads with performance tips and tweaks seem to make not much sense so far.

Yes, should be exactly the same on patch 4.

Most performance 'tweaks' posted here are placebo - fact is, the game isn't going to run as intended on a computer that can't handle it. Commandline tweaks can help in rare cases, but I've seen so many posts where people have actually made up command lines (that don't exist) and claimed a performance benefit. confused.gif

This game will only use 3 cores maximum.

Your graphics card is probably being bottlenecked by your CPU, so overclocking will help.
