I saw about a 5-7 FPS increase using this technique, with absolutely no other changes I ran about 4 benchmarks on the before and after. I can verify that I also did in-fact see a boost.

Ok guys im sorry i came after a long time here n im confused how to make it work? sad.gif 1st i set the resolution to 800x600 @ 60Hz from game menu and set other settings and its using 393/499 Memory then i made a commandline.txt in the main folder and i put this line:

-height 1024 -width 1280 -availablevidmem 0.788 (thats my monitor max resolution @ 60hz) n i divided 393 by 499

when i run game it runs and showed same resolution in game menu as well [email protected] and can see warning of video memory limit. When i play game it runs same like before and start to stutter after some mins sad.gif plz help me out as i dont know what im doing wrong coz i could not understand the process maybe correctly sad.gif

I think this tweak only works for the patch 2 and earlier. Because patch 3 is basically this tweak, being able to adjust water quality, shadow etc. at what ever resolution.

How do you start the game in windowed mode?

You put "-windowed" (without quotes) in commandline.txt. If you don't know how to do that; then read this post!

Or you can add it to the path field(to the end of what's already there) on the shortcut tab of the Shortcut to GTAIV property sheet. A text file is probably better though.

^Ah, totally forgot about that.

Steam users can alternatively add the commandline to launch options;

  • Right-click the Steam icon in taskbar and select 'library' or 'games' (depending on Steam version)
  • Right-click GTA IV / EFLC and select 'properties'
  • Select 'SET LAUNCH OPTIONS' and insert the command -windowed

You can add several commands to this line just as with the other methods - by separating with space.

Sorry if the question's already been raised before, but I can't seem to be able to force the resolution. My commandline.txt reads "-height 800 -width 1280 -availablevidmem 1.06", but the graphics settings list the resolution as 1280x800 on startup even though I set them at 800x600 earlier. I know my availablevidmem command is working, as the displayed VRAM value has increased.

For what it's worth, I've reduced the number of rain particles present, am using the ATI DX10 shaders for all my shader profiles (as suggested by the OP), and am using an HP Pavilion DV5, with 4GB of DDR3; 512mb of VRAM; a core 2 duo running at 2.66GHz and a GeForce 9600M GT. I'm also using the Razor1911 launcher because I don't like SecuRom and don't like the fact that Rockstar wastes its time and money putting complicated DRM in place that gets cracked within weeks. I'm not sure if I've made this clear; I own a legitimate copy of the game despite using the Razor launcher.

Could someone please help me?

Tried those fast at the same time,, didn't help much. Maybe if you would tell us how to improve shaders to look good and move fast at the same time.

I'm not sure about improving the shaders themselves; only thing I can suggest there is turning bloom up to max (search "misc.bloom" in visualsettings.dat, you'll find three values. I'm not sure what the maximum values are; the default is 10, 10 and 5). GTAIV doesn't seem to use HDR (which offers better shader contrast), so no luck there. Here're some mods that should help you, both performance and quality-wise, though:

1. The so-called Ultimate Graphics Tweak is probably going to make you drop 1-2 frames (with smooth shadows and depth of field enabled), but it definitely makes my game run smoother. The game looks a lot more realistic with the tweak on; it blurs objects in the distance (that also stops jagged edges standing out so much) and almost removes the crappy grainy shadows. It also seems to remove the white lines (gaps between textures) that you occasionally see on cars and a few other objects, or at least makes them completely unnoticeable. The versions that have "no" motion blur seem to have some light blurring; it only happens at the edges if the screen when you get into cover; or if you get into a vehicle, stay still and rotate the camera quickly. If it kills your performance then you can turn it on and off on the fly by pressing "p", it's not as though you need to restart or anything.

2. The GTA4 Environment Mod. I haven't used this personally (I'm struggling to get this running smoothly as it is), so I don't know about the performance hit your game takes, but the trailers look great and other people seem to really like it. It's fully compatible with the Ultimate Graphics Tweak, so no problems there. Seems to be helping the realism in much the same way. Some people are saying that the mod actually helps performance though, so I'll give it a shot and give some impressions (give me a while though, internet here is slow. I'm talking a 30kb/s download rate).

3. There's a file you can download to help with this, but I can't find the thread at the moment. This is the "farclp tweak", where you can tone down the view distance to get an FPS boost and more available VRAM, but the view distance actually stays the same. First, go to your GTAIV directory, and then into pc\data\, and make a backup of timecyc.dat (or use the magic patch; I just copy it and paste somewhere else). Then open it (notepad works fine, it's actually a mess in Notepad++, don't try it), and find a column called "farclp". By default it should be 1500, with slightly different values on the last set of data (not sure, maybe it's so draw distance reduces in the rain). This is effectively the game's "view distance". The max value is 3500, and I wouldn't go below 500. Set all values in the column somewhere between the two, then save the file. Now, open GTAIV and reduce the view distance to 1. There should be virtually no difference in draw distance besides minute lack of detail at the edges of it, and you should see a performance boost; otherwise your game should look identical.

4. Go into visualsettings.dat, and find values called "rain.numberparticles" (there should be 2). Reduce both and see how the game looks when it's raining; if the rain doesn't seem thick enough then up the particle number until you're happy. The intention is to reduce the number of rain particles shown when it's raining, which should help your performance in the rain.

Note: Mod number 2 has its own visualsettings.dat included, as well as its own timecyc (I think it includes the farclp tweak), so edit those values to your liking after installing the Environment Mod.

I also recommend GRIM's Weapon Packs; they've recently been converted to work with GTAIV and the level of detail's much better than the vanilla weapons. I can't account for the textures in Pack I, but everything from II onwards is bloody great. There're also packs for use with EFLC, so give them a shot too. You'll need SparkIV to use any of them though, and OpenIV to make the MP5 flashlight work. Also, any silencers are purely superficial.

EDIT: Just tried the Environment Mod... while it does indeed look great, you need to have settings cranked up high to really enjoy it. I'm talking virtually no tweaks besides more eye-candy; bloom is increased by default and it's impossible to really enjoy with this thread's tweak. A lot of the changes are subtle, but you really notice them if you uninstall the mod. There's even an option for an antialiasing mod, which should dramatically reduce the jagged edges (but expect a big performance hit). Keeping bloom at the default values for the mod (5, 20, 3, I think) and using the default motion blur cut about 7fps (big hit if, like me, you're running 25 on average). Using tweak 3 in mod 1 (smooth shadows, depth of field, no motion blur) made it a 5fps hit, so again quite substantial. Bottom line is, if you've got the system to run it, the environment mod is great. If you can play GTAIV with everything pumped to the max, bloom, detail distance, textures, etc. (you're allowed to farclp 3500 and make view distance 0) and run it at about 40+ fps, you'll love this mod. It honestly makes so many changes that you really start to miss once it's gone. But if, like me, you're using a notebook dual-core to run such a CPU-intensive game, I really wouldn't use it.

HI all...

you can play gta 4 with good quality and performance.... HOW ?!

this is my laptop spec. : HP Dv7 1025nr, nvidia geforce 9600m gt 512 mb, Intel Dual Core P8400 2,2 GHZ, 360 gb hard, 4 GB Ram

i have RAZOR'S version of the game (13,8 gb)

1.st - download patch 1.0.4.0 and install it...

2.nd - download RAZOR'S crack for 1.0.4.0 version of the game. Copy all files of the crack.

3.rd - Enter the game. Register on xlive offline, than go to start and when the game starts , go to MENU and to Graphics, set graphics to 800x600

Now read " MonkeyMhz's " first post . So basicly you must set your details of the game so that the memory showed below is allmost equal... example: 485/486 (thats mine)

4.th - Now exit the game and create commandline.txt in your system dir where Gta 4 is (read what " MonkeyMhz's " wrote) ... what you tipe there depends on your system..

MY EXAMPLE : I had 485/486 which i modefied in game in 800x600 details - read step 3.

So i calculated this : 485 / 512 = 0,94 (512 is my graphic card dedicated mem.)

Now i wrote in my commandline this :

-height 1050

-width 1680

-availablevidmem 0.95

* heigh and width depends which resolution you want in game.

And thats it. Now my GTA 4 runs smoothly biggrin.gif and i am very happy man ... big thanks to MonkeyMhz .... POzz

And yes, you can check if you did everything wright by going after all this in graphics in game and if resolutions is 800x600...you did everything ok. Ofc now game wont budge, so you must ALT + TAB and shut it down.... when you go to game again, just go directly to START ... and have happy playing guys biggrin.gif

OHH and i forgat to mention some other things...

I have Windows 7 64-bit

* Download latest drivers for your graphic card *

i have also downloaded Riva Tuner 2.24 and clocked my graphic card . Now when i go to DXDIAG, it states that my graphic card has 2284 Approx.Total Memory

if you have Geforce you should try this. !!! But dont overdrive it !!!

when you downloaded Riva Tuner 2.24 go to Main tab and there you will see Driver settings , there is button - customize... clik on it and then clik system settings .

Now check ENEABLE DRIVER LEVEL HARDWER.... and put Performance 3d . Below you will se FORCE CONSTANT PERFORMANCE LEVEL. Put there performance 3D also.

ENEABLE DRIVER LEVEL HARDWER

I adjusted it like this : 400 , 800, 400

Now check your DXDIAG and see what *Approx.Total Memory* you have

Thats it. Bye tounge.gif

Hi guys!

I recently bought this game. I have a decent PC specs. Quad-core @ 2.5 Ghz, 9600 GT and 4 GB DDR3 memory.

As I wasn't happy with the default performance I started doing some research, and actually I found this tutorial.

I went though it from the very beginning, but there seem to be some troubles with it.

I had the -availablevidmem setting calculated, in order to use low reflections map, and I added it to the launcher

( I tried to use de commandline.txt but had no effect).

Just like this:

-availablevidmem 1.401 -height 900 -width 1440

No need to say that I had already run the game so I changed its resolution to 800x600.

But then when I restart the game, and I check the video settings it has changed to 1440x900.

Can't find any solution to this. I would appreciate it so much, if you can help me to solve this.

Thanks in advance.

The Idea:

You've heard this rant a million times, GTAIV was future proofed all reflections and shadows are scaled with the resolution. A stupid yet seemingly unfix-able problem that makes the game a mess. Playing a game in 1024x768 or lower is not acceptable. If I wanted to do that I would pull out my P2/P3 with its 32/64mb graphic card. From looking at GTAIV, it has a lot of new technology but nothing that should struggle to run on 8800's or even 8600's. Its that resolution scaling, im sure of it!.

The Plan:

There must be a way to correct this mess. Lets look at our checklist.

- Configs/Settings Profiles in game directory? /fail.

- Will R*'s patch will add more options in? /fail.

Not long ago I figured out you can run in windowed mode in 800x600 and then stretch the window larger and it gets around R*'s quality scaling that would increase the reflection maps.etc that would lag the game and make objects/textures disappear and horrid pop-ins. It made the game look good because you weren't dealing with such a low resolution and the game played extremely well.

I wanted to look into this and see if you can achieve the same thing without stretched the window manually every time.

The Support:

After browsing the net, I noticed others used commandline.txt to set the size of their window, and some people have achieved resolutions over their memory limit without using -norestrictions and only using the resolution from the command lines. This instantly helped me find the answer I wanted.

How To Do It:

Theory:

Now my theory was that, if you have a memory limit on, and you enter a resolution in the command line that is unable to be achieved with that memory limit, it will still put you in that resolution, but the quality scaling will not be implemented. Therefore no disappearing objects/textures, no long or noticeable pop-in's, and less/no lag.

The trick is implementing the higher resolutions with you preferred graphic settings, by limiting your memory to just barely include the options you want, and then you force the resolution.

Steps:

1. Get rid of -nomemrestrict or any current commandlines you have. Run the game and let it die. When you run the game, go to the graphic options, turn your resolution to 800x600 or 1024x768 or whatever you want the reflection maps/resolution based quality to be at, I did 800x600 mainly because it looks simular to the rest and will give you the most performance. Use the rest of your memory budget in draw distance.etc.

2. If you cannot acheive the graphical settings you want with your currently memory budget do this next step. If you can, then you can skip this step.

make commandline.txt or append -availablevidmem (multiplier):

This command works like this, say I have 256mb vram. -availablevidmem 2.0 would make it say I have 512mb vram, its a multiplier.

So for getting our settings as we want it lets make a budget of 512mb vram, so -availablevidmem 2.0.

Open GTAIV, set resolution in the ingame settings to 800x600, set rest of the options to whatever you want (be reasonable).

Now continue to the next step.

3. Now you have your game set as you want it, but in a f-ugly resoltion, but we will fix that. Next step is to trick GTAIV, even people with 512mb graphic cards or even 1gb, this is even useful for them.

One of my buddies with a 8800GTX loves this tweak because it allows him to get much higher frames with very little to no graphical loss.

So now lets say all our desired settings ingame @ 800x600, use 650Mb. Ok. But say were now using a 1GB card so it says 650/1024Mb. This is a problem now because if we force -height 1080 -width 1920. We will end up with our ingame options changing to 1920x1080 giving us way more slowdowns because R* starts using that dam scaling reflection maps.etc with resolution.

So what we need to do now is limit the memory GTAIV sees to exactly the amount to run our game in 800x600 (or whatever quality refection maps.etc you want) with our desired settings.

So lets go back to our dilemma, we have a 1GB graphic card and the game only takes up 650mb with the settings we want in 800x600.

We can figure this out by doing some simple math.

1GB Card (650mb desired settings): 650/1024 = 0.635 (its 0.634 but give a tiny bit extra, just like a couple megabytes).

So you would use -availablevidmem 0.635 that would make the game detect you only have 650mb ram which barely fits the features you want in 800x600.

So now once we have figured that out your commandline.txt or your shortcut appending should look like this (depending on what resolution you want/your vidmem.etc):

-height 1080 -width 1920 -availablevidmem 0.65

and maybe you add stuff like (-framelimit, or -noblank or whatever).

*BUT DO NOT USE ANY UN-RESTRICTION (this includes the nomemrestrict and norestrictions or anything like that)!

4. Now when we start up our game. We will be in our desired resolution, and when we look in the game options it will say 800x600, even though we are in a way higher resolution and all your settings will be how you want them and your memory budget will be exactly the right amount or similar like 650/650 or 742/746.etc

Funny thing here you wont be able to go back cuz it will detect your memory budget is to low and the game is forcing a higher res, so you might not be able to leave the options screen now, so alt tab, and close the game. If all your settings looked right and it said 800x600 but was clearly in a higher res. Then you did everything right, if not, go retry.

5. Now restart the game and play. Yay, good fps, cheated GTAIV to not up the reflection quality with the resolution.

Additional Speed: If you happen to be running Vista x86/x64 and you have a directx10 capable graphic card. Do what elecg2 figured out. I tried creating empty/easy HLSL shaders and putting them in GTAIV to get rid of shadows and stuff but that didn't work.

However by doing what elecg2 tried, I got a huge performance increase,

Go to GTAIV folder, go into common, then shaders.

Backup everything in there <- !!!

Then copy the contents of win32_30_atidx10, and paste them into win32_30_nv8. Or just rename the folders, whatever makes you happy.

That gave me a significant performance boost and I have no graphical problems or abnormalities. Try it, if it causes you problems or decreased performance then just put it back to normal. With these steps you can get your game running beautifully in no time, or at least better than before.

Enjoy.

*Ill be adding screen shots tonight.

Please Sticky This, I'm tired of people complaining when the answer is right under their nose.

To do a test to actually see if you get any gain from this start your game with 800x600, rest settings how you want them, but start the game in windowed mode. Manually drag the window to your screen size. See if you have a performance increase there, if so. Then doing this big mess of text will help you achieve what you achieved there without having to start the game in windowed mode and manually resize it, thats all this thing does. If you don't get a gain from it then clearly this is no use to you. But it is use to a lot of people.

Now wheres my proof?

*Oh nice monkey, you showed us some screens but you have no proof!.

*Oh yes i do!.

Here the game is 800x600 in game options but tweaked to play at 1680x1050 (look at the highlights/sun reflection on the water):

http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/2272/shad...0stretchye9.jpg

Here is the game at 1680x1050 in game, no tweak (notice the waters highlights/sun reflection is not as stretched, higher res, because in the first screen we are cheating the reflections to not up with the res, also notice in the distance everything disappears):

http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/1943/sh...1050normjv4.jpg

And to keep things fair, in those water screens, the game was maxed, high textures, high render, full distance, full detail, hence the FPS remained 10 in both!.

I rather play the game in a higher res with no disappearing objects and no pop-ins with lower reflection maps, than the game in a high res with better reflection maps but everything disappears.

This tweak shmozzle does something!, so its not a placebo. I'm happily running the game 1280x800 with medium tex, hi rend, always in the 20s. So I honestly can care less if you believe me, the evidence is here that it will help someone and if you don't believe me then don't. Ill go enjoy my game while you can sit there and sob.

If your settings constantly reset, please use what ircmaster wrote:

If your graphics settings reset every time you start it up again just follow this quick fix:

(Note this is the Vista way, I'm not sure how to do it in XP)

1. Go into your C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\Settings folder

2. Delete everything that's in there

3. Start the game with your desired settings and settings shouldn't reset anymore

And I'm not lying or trying to ruin your game or anything. I got this off of the official GTA IV support website.

Btw, you know what pisses me off, R* could have added a single checkbox that says "Quality Resolution" and then you check it or uncheck it, checked it would up the reflections with the resolution unchecked it would just do what were doing by doing this whole frag feast of text. Lazy R* (do you wanna sell more games?). And a single check box would not make the options complicated!.

THANKS DUDE!!!!!! tounge.gif

The 4th patch(or was it the third?) made this obsolete.

I'm not sure, but the resolution problem could be because your resolution in Windows is 1440x900. Why such an odd resolution anyway?

Aw, jeez. I updated the game to 1.0.7.0 version when I installed it. Isn't there any other fix to do this?

My screen native resolution is 1440x900. =)

Thanks for your help, BTW! =D

Aw, jeez. I updated the game to 1.0.7.0 version when I installed it. Isn't there any other fix to do this?

My screen native resolution is 1440x900. =)

Thanks for your help, BTW! =D

I see your problem: -height 900 -width 1440 That overrides the resolution setting in the graphics settings. Remove that from the command line(or change it to -height 600 -width 800).

But if I want to play at native res,

How am I supposed to do that? I mean scaling down reflection maps.

I'll try what you told me instead. Thanx.

Oh. I thought you wanted to play at 800 x 600. Are you sure that 1440 x 900 is your monitor's native resolution?

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok people, I have a problem and I know there's someone out there who is more clever than I am who can help me out. I mean, that's what these forums are for, right?

Here's my rig:

Phenom II x6 1090T 3.2Ghz

ATI Radeon HD 6870

4 GB DDR3 @ 1866

2TB HDD @ 7200 RAID0+2

Here's my software:

Windows 7 Enterprise (32 bit)

GTAIV w/ 1.0.7.0 patch

ATI Catalyst 10.12

Here's my problem:

I try to run the game at my monitor's native resolution (1680x1050) and it's running at about average 10-15 FPS plus textures are missing (eg. There's no friggin water, and entire sides of buildings are a muckled mess). I've been rummaging through old posts on this site, and others trying to find out some sort of fix, but alas, I have discovered none that involves or incorporates the latest patch (both GTA and ATI) and doesn't require me to completely rape the game folder or shortcut.

I've tried everything I've come across, and there has been nothing that fixes this lack of performance and textures.

I could honestly care less about the FPS; it's the textures that I really want. I'm tired of looking out and seeing boats floating in mid air. But a few more FPS would be acceptable. biggrin.gif

I've spent months looking for a solution, and if I have passed over one in this thread, I'm sorry. But since we're here, I'm sure we can be civil about things.

Thanks so much guys!

PS:

The rape comment was a little exaggerated, yes. My frustration has leaked over. My apologies.

15 FPS is about 30% of what you should be getting, so there is a major conflict going on there.

How fresh is the OS installation? Are you sure you installed all drivers that are available for your hardware? I've seen people in the same situation that had some motherboard driver missing. Did you check the temps for overheating? Are you using any commadline switches?

I've gone through and updated every driver I have. Temps are OK, and there's no commandline switches. And the machine is only 3 months old, so the OS is pretty fresh.

I'm baffled. I mean, Crysis runs at 45 FPS on High on my machine, yet this horrible PC port does not. This makes me sad on the inside.

Mkey, if you have a suggestion...?

Hi

This guide worked a treat on my laptop.

Spec:

* Core 2 Duo (Wolfdale) @2.66Ghz

* 4Gb RAM

* AMD/ATI 4650M 1Gb

* 160Gb Intel G2 SSD

* Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit)

I set the res. at 800x480. Set up the GTA IV graphics options.

Then forced the resolution with my Steam client GTA IV

launch option (switches) to 1366x768 native (@0.8 x GPU memory).

The game is almost playable at HIGH settings for everything!!

The tradeoff being aliasing on shadows at certain times of day.

But I can set the draw+detail distance to 80% which is so much better!

FRAPs says an average of 20 FPS. But it's no CSS twitch shooter - it's

all about the eye candy!

Now all I need is someone to work out how to get rid of the dumb GFWL s**t!!

Thanks dude! cool.gifcool.gif

Bob
