Well then instead of spending so much on your computer and GPU, why didn't you buy a Xbox360 and just get GTAIV on that?.

This is like a plague here, piracy rates are sky rocking every following year and people would spend thousands on their PC rigs instead of buying consoles just so they can jack free content off the internet to avoid the 40% tax rate on video games. simply retarded.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but my computer only cost me $800.

AMD Phenom 9850 X4 Quad Core 2.5 ghz

EVGA GeForce GTX 285 (I used the Step Up program to go from a GTX 260 65mm)

Western Digital 250 GB hard drive SATA II

2 GB RAM DDR 2 800mhz

WINXP SP2

No idea where you bought your computer, or where your friends buy their computers, but it sounds like they're the ones who buy from Dell and HP and Fry's.

Yea man, computers are cheap if you get them custom. And the only reason why I buy computers is, Im a gfx hor, I use my pc for 3D/Programming/ stuff like that, and I like them =D (very useful). But if your strapped for cash and you want to game get a console. Especially if the kids in another country were PC's cost ridicolous amounts.

Ive tried your idea and I don't really see any potential. Why would the programing error and memory leaks go away because less memory was made available. Do you really think something Rockstar produced (I mean they are famous for their sh*tty code and embarrassingly crappy game design, the only thing going for them are their conceptual ideas) would be intelligent enough to produce code that would detect that too little memory is available and because of that disable some graphical core function (flaw) the game was created with?

I think that is very unlikely.

What proof do you have? Those screen shots show nothing. I gain performance some performance by following your guide but that is because GTA lowers view distance and similar when to little memory is available.

The truth is that unless you have some future space age system as your gaming rig you cant play this game. I mean, I play Crysis with all settings maxed out and has 70-100 fps. In GTA with everything set to low I cant even go above 60 FPS. I mean, 60 FPS is the absolute lowest rate a game should run at. If for some reason hardware cannot make the game go faster then the game need to present the player with choices to make the game run at an acceptable level.

If you recently bought a high end system for gaming then that is FAAAR beyond anything that GTA IV should be able to use up. GTA doesn't feature anything impressive that hasn't been done before. Graphic vice it is at most mediocre compared to what already has been done on other games.

Unless you are fine with watching movies in slow motion, reading books with barely visible text... then dont accept this piece of crap. Return it to the store and demand your money back or threaten to sue them for selling faulty products. Its about time consumers demand that the games should be well made and optimized for performance.

The only thing that amazes me is why each time Rockstar releases a new game I think that this one might actually be playable. smile.gif

Does this trick still work with the latest 1.03 patch? Because it's not working for me. When I restart the game after editing the commandline it just forces the options to whatever resolution I've set in my commandline. The graphics memory also goes over the limit but they just give me a warning and let me continue playing?

Help please?

EDIT: Ok I got it to stick to 800 by 600 in the settings window by making my availablevidmem 1 decimal place. However, when I start the game itself, it looks exactly like 1440 by 900 though my settings say 800 by 600, and I get exactly the same performance as I would with 1440 by 900 normally. Really weird?

Ugh, This tweak was for people with less GPU power than CPU power. Therefore the GPU is bottlenecking some performance. What this tweak did, was force the reflections, shadows, water all to low quality without having to use 800x600 resolution. That way theres not as much stress on the GPU so you the higher resolutions would run better.

I never said anything about playing this game 60fps+.

"threaten to sue them for selling faulty products.", yea like the cashier gives a damn, and don't tell me what to do.

"Its about time consumers demand that the games should be well made and optimized for performance." Agreed, but majority of the people don't help when they complain the game is taking too long to make and if it doesn't come out by X, they wont buy it. And also, most company's worry about Profit > Performance.

If you want proof, look at those two screens I post, look at the water, with the tweak forcing the 800x600 in a higher res it shows the water shader stretched/less detailed.

If you look at the screen without the tweak, the water shader looks more repeated/hi res and isnt stretched.

Now patch your game to the newest version, go into that same res, go put your water to low, take a screen, then put the water to high, take a screen.

And compare with the screen shots posted under my proof, you will see a simular result. And exactly what im saying, low water = stretched shader, Hi water = hi res shader.

OR

Follow my tweak go into 1680x1050 take a picture of the water, then don't use my tweak and take a picture of the water. Then with the patched gtaiv go into 1680x1050 and take a screen of the water with it set on high, and with it set on low.

You will notice the shader will be more stretched/lower quality on 1680x1050 (v1.0) with my tweak and with 1680x1050 with low water.

And you will notice a higher resolution/more detailed shader with 1680x1050 (v1.0) without my tweak and with 1680x1050 with high water.

And it doesn't fix memory leaks or anything, what it simply did is my textures then showed up in a higher resolution because since the shadows/reflects/water were set to low, less vram/stress was on the GPU so my card was able to display textures without long loading times or waiting.

Now enough. This tweak is useless since the new patched version of GTAIV has settings ingame to change the quality of shadows/water/reflections and does not bind them according to your resolution.

someone can help me? i didnt full understand Monkeys FPS Boost story but i got a fps problem... im running:

Commandline.txt = -windowed -height 1050 -width 1680 -noblank

what does them help? -windowed just let me play 800x600 resolution window = doesnt help, not funny to play -.-

-noblank = i got no idea what this does help.

-height and -width = no idea... and wtf is -availablevidmem 0.65 = this gives me 50mb more to card memory ^^

can someone explain me what monkey does mean i dont get it wow.gif OR What i need to do to get FPS Boostie.

alien.gif

EDIT: does it help to get Patch 1.0.1 or 1.0.2 because i got only 1.0.3... ?

- windowed = You play in a smaller window because it uses less resources

- novblank = Turns off v-sync. V-sync usually fixes screen "tearing" but it also uses up more resources

- height -width = If you want a custom resolution

- availableviemem = Changes the amount of VRAM GTA thinks you have based on the number after it to allow higher settings. Leaving the number as 1 doesn't alter it. Above 1 increases the amount and below 1 decreases

EDIT: Patch 1.0.3.0 is the newest and best

Yo monkey can you help me? ^_^' i did what u said in the post but it didnt work... after i did the -availablemem thingy and add the -height and -width the game starts in 800x640...and also my resolution is limited to 1280x1024 (i cant set it any higher) ..even if i dont do the tweak you came up with i still cant make my resol. bigger ( i added the -height and -width parameters)...tough i can set bigger resolution in -windowed mode.

A 9400 is a terrible card. You should've done your research before you made your purchase. My old 8800GTS would easily beat the performance on your card. Heck, my old old OLD 7900 would beat the 9400 in benchmark comparisons.

Here's how you purchase a card, quoted from NVIDIA's support forums:

heres how the nvidia numbering system works, first number is the series... second number denotes how good in that series, best being a 9 and the worst being... a 0.

So a GeForce 9xxx card tells you that you have a GeForce 9 series card.

x4xx tells you that it's a very below-average card within whatever series card it is.

8800GTS > 9400

7900GTX > 9400

8600GT >= 9400

Your card sucks. I'm not surprised that you're getting terrible performance. Sell your 9400 on Craigslist or eBay or Amazon or wherever and get a new card. Yes, that's the only advice I'm giving you. If you lower settings more than you already are, you might as well just not have bought your 9400 and just bought an XBOX360.

Do your research next time and don't make uninformed purchases. Don't give me the "I don't have enough money!" excuse, because then you shouldn't have bought the card to begin with. It's basic economics, do you want to buy a crap cheap Pinto car that can explode and kill you quickly, or just wait ONE more week (or one more month, whatever time it takes you to get the money) to buy a better car, or motorcycle like the Kawasaki Ninja 250R 2009?

So don't give me that excuse because it just makes you look even more defensive, and moreover uninformed and uneducated, or in plain words... it makes you look stupid with your money.

Why did this get unstickied?

Because this is useless now since the new GTAIV patch adds new ingame options to adjust reflection/shadow/water quality regardless your resolution. Therefore this tweak no longer has a use since what it did can now be done ingame.

No.

Quoted from NVIDIA forums:

heres how the nvidia numbering system works, first number is the series, so its a 7 series (we are past the 9 series in desktop cards btw), second number denotes how good in that series, best being a 9 and the worst being... a 0.

You bought a 7300.

1, it's not a gaming card (gaming is x6xx, x7xx, x8xx or x9xx)

2, you bought a GeForce 7. GeForce 7 cards are outdated (HELLO, GeForce 8's are already becoming outdated)

3, GeForce 7 cards do not render games the same way 8, 9, and GT200- series cards. It does not follow the CUDA standard which 8 9 and GT200- cards do.

4, a 7300 just sucks. WHY did you buy a 7300 thinking it'll play games like GTA IV? GTA IV has dynamic shadows everywhere, SSAO ambient occlusion and VERY high res textures (even my GTX 285 with 1 GB has trouble getting the view distance past 50 on highest details)

It's pretty simple already, what, do you want us to give you more in-depth instructions like "take your right hand and put it on the mouse, then move it 12 cm to the top left of your desktop screen"

No.

That's all the help you're getting. Man up, it ain't that hard. I'm no computer geek and I figured out the damn thing.

Neil that's not very nice.

All he needs to know is that this fix is outdated. No one needs to use this thread anymore (in fact, it should probably be locked) because the latest patch (1030) allows you to do everything that this "fix" did manually.

This fix is useless now.
