Remix
Apologies if old, I did search. EA's Spore topped the list of most pirated video games for 2008, according to TorrentFreak. Spore suffered from a serious PR problem when Electronic Arts introduced an archaic DRM technology that infuriated thousands of users and led to a piracy tsunami. EA, however, said the downloads didn't hurt Spore sales. Most people agree that EA's heavy-handed DRM helped to push Spore to the top of the list. The initial outrage (500k downloads in the first 10 days) was obviously curtailed over the next several months, but these download numbers are still quite astounding. 1. Spore (1,700,000) 2. The Sims 2 (1,150,000) 3. Assassins Creed (1,070,000) 4. Crysis (940,000) 5. Command & Conquer 3 (860,000) 6. Call of Duty 4 (830,000) 7. GTA San Andreas (740,000) 8. Fallout 3 (645,000) 9. Far Cry 2 (585,000) 10. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (470,000) Note: the number in parenthesis is the estimated http://news.cnet.com/8301-13846_3-10116502-62.html
Mainland Marauder
How ironic, something that is supposed to discourage piracy does the exact opposite. Wonder if they'll do that with Sims 3. QwertyAAA
Cool. I'm quite surprised to see San Andreas still remaining on the top 10.
Mainland Marauder
This would be a good time to say support Rockstar and buy the game. Unlike EA they haven't been doing any security bullsh*t that installs things on your computer without you knowing about it. DexX
500k in the first 10 days, and estimated to be @ 1.7million now? *evil voice* Where's your DRM NOW?! Bwahahahahaha!
ryuclan
How ironic, something that is supposed to discourage piracy does the exact opposite. Wonder if they'll do that with Sims 3. I think when they do that, people want to pirate it just because they're not supposed to. When it comes to the internet and computers people seem to like being where they are not supposed to be. Putting that software on there was just sending out a challenge, and apparently EA lost.

Putting that software on there was just sending out a challenge, and apparently EA lost. It's basically like saying "I dare you to copy and pirate this" and of course they always find a way. DRM for music ended up the same way, with Sony even getting slapped with a lawsuit over it. *evil voice*Where's your DRM NOW?! darthYENIK
They called it down upon themselves. I'd consider it a compliment, but EA are not as humorous.

That many people want your game THAT bad. I'm kind of surprised that Assassin's Creed is on the list because thats a pretty short game.
GTA3Freak-2001
Is Spore also 2008's most likely game to be installed and played for a month or two and then happily abandoned because it was an over hyped game that gave people short-lived fun? Assassins Creed was in the spotlight and all that everyone talked about was Assassins Creed. It was really overrated and everyone wanted a piece of it. The biggest irony is that EA wanted to stop the piracy and they implemented that DRM and/or SecuROM in Spore first (I think), and now Spore is No1 pirated game of 2008
Mute Giant
Spore is one of the few games I've bought during the last years. And to be honest I wish that I downloaded it instead. It was most certainly not worth the money!
