Why can other games such as Fallout3, Armed Assault, FarCry2 and more... pull it off with better graphics and physics than GTA4 but GTA4 can't?

Rockstar have had almost 4 years to perfect this so called engine, but have completely got it wrong.

Than I don't understand why I don't have a FPS drop when I crash into 10 people, yet when I'm slowly cruising, my FPS drop 50% on certain locations without that much interesting stuff on screen.

It is a bad port. I mean this game tells you need a Quad Core, then it doesn't even max out all the cores. Core 1 and 4 is always max out while 3 is around 50-60% and core 2 is hardly used. That is very inneficient , and i remember a presentation Valve gave were they said that maxing out some cores while leaving some not used or uses very little is a waste of processing power. And instead they found it better to split the loads equal across them all, instead of leaving some to do it all, the down side to this is that it take longer to implement in game. And well seeing as we got the port of the 360 version Rockstar couldn't be bothered to work on the threading.

This is what is annoying me, is that Rockstar says my system is not powerful enough yet they won't use all it's potential power, instead i'm forced to overclock so that those cores that are working work faster while the one that is'nt does f*ck all cause Rockstar won't use it fully.

Physics kill the CPU, I mean kill our current CPU's.

CSS - there's a game thats, what? 5 years old now? The ragdoll and simplistic physics in the game have held the 5 year old game from tripling fps rates (as most GPU heavy games do every 3 years for). You can run CSS on a GTX280 and get the same frame-rate at heavily physics ridden times in the game as a 7900GT.

GTA4 is doing simplistic physics + actively intelligent AI calculations x the amount of physical objects in one radius

Okay....so why the f*uck an Xbox360 can handle those uber physhics ?

Because they don't need to optimise a game for consoles. The game will run exactly the same on all 360's.

Rockstar just got lazy and wanted to knock out GTA4 on PC for Xmas then rake in the cash and leave us PC gamers pondering why on earth we bought it.

Exacttly ....and i'm not even concerned by the f*ucking single player game at all ,sure i can live with 20 fps on single ,but on multiplayer how the hell do people play ? is that why theres so less people online ? do i need a f*cking 6000 $ computer to play online ! ????

Because Rockstar took the time to squeeze all the performance out of it. They custom built it for it and did loads of optimising. And Microsoft's quality control is alot stricter on the 360 than on Windows, if Rockstar gave them a game with poor frame rates and graphical glitches it would be rejected. Also Rockstar can't use the 'upgrade your hardware it's not powerful enough' excuse which they do with us PC gamers. This won't just be my last Rockstar game it will also be my last Games for Windows Live game.

Because the 360/PS3 blurs and blooms you into fps falsehood bliss. Not to mention the equivalent amount of "traffic" on the consoles is set to about 15 (?>).

Regardless, if this port was a copy/paste effort (we don't know for sure), that would be f*cking lazy.

And you guys start throwing rocks at people who say they pirated this game, and mods who start saying that PC gaming will die because of piracy ,get you facts straight and take you head out of your ass ,GAMES WITH NO COPY PROTECTION ARE SUCCESES AND SELL WELL (SINS OF A SOLAR EMPIRE) BECAUSE THE PRODUCER CARES ! Piracy isn't killing pc gaming, its ruthless money vacums like Rockstar .You can't seem to recognize a careless producer when their spitting in your face .

Yup^^^

Although this is Rockstar's first f*ck up, I think the worst company of all has to be EA. I really, really hope Rcokstar don't hit their standards.

+1 to above post

R* may have messed up, but im sure they will also fix the issues, I mean come on...

Im sick of reading about people defending piracy... it dont matter what you make yourself believe, Piracy Sucks

Im glad I can call / email R* support (they have been very helpful so far by email) Im glad I contributed somewhat

towards their wages for building an amazing game (bought it on PS3 and now PC) and the PC version is far superior.

So what, the game has bugs.. im sure they will be ironed out, everything these days ends up getting patched, whether it be on PC or Console

I also dont blame them for trying to protect their creation... yeah it got cracked like everything else, would have been better to install a random virus

into your machines & wipe all your documents / system folders lol, if you pirated it, but I guess they cant do that devil.gif

Sure friend keep telling yourself that ,WHAT is stupid is people who are forcing themselvs to be positive and optimists ,instead of being realists ,to realize that rockstar won't pull a magic rabitt out the hat, that they will continue to say that "UPGRADE YOUR MACHINE ,ALL THE CUSTOMERS ARE RUNNING sh*tTY RIGS" and whatnot ,in being realist you can admit that there is a problem ,and can do something about it,thats how life works (BEST) ,me for example i'm gonna uninstall this game, drink a little coffe, and go for a drive with my buddy's ,eventually i will stop visiting these forums because i won't care.

Yes, I also learned my lesson. Hey, I will always support R* in all their games and will try to see the good side in them. But don't expect another cent outta me ever again. smile.gif

Look, if you aren't getting acceptable frame rates WITH the recommended or better hardware, then i'm afraid it's more than likely a software error/resource hog on YOUR computer. ( i dont care what you say! - IT IS!!)

Unfortunalty I disagree, ive just recently (two days before installing GTAIV) formatted and reinstalled my entire system. So on a fresh install of Vista 64 & drivers the game still runs poor on my machine.

There are too many factor's to blame it on just one thing.

First of all hello to all,

I have been visiting these forums since getting this game on release, but have only just registered, and this topic is probably not the best way to make new friends here, but anyway...

Look, if you aren't getting acceptable frame rates WITH the recommended or better hardware, then i'm afraid it's more than likely a software error/resource hog on YOUR computer. ( i dont care what you say! - IT IS!!)

open up task manager, more than 14 processes is wank, and you dont need them, get rid of steam, and the bullsh*t nvidia boot up crap. Find out what all the rest do for you.

Service pack 3 for XP is sh*te to say the least. Have a read on any windows forum and you'll realise that. So seeing as you really have to have sp3, fine tune your system with what you have at your disposal. Sure this game has been poorly optimised, but on my system which has an average of 49fps, i am quite happy. Stop trying to run the game on your native monitor settings (if it's above 1280 x 1024)and reach a compromise. There is nothing wrong with playing it at 1024 even, it still looks good.

This isn't a comparable game, so stop with the "i can play crysis maxed" bullsh*t. This game has so much going on in the background - invisible to you. It is a breathing living environment, and the computer (and im meaning the CPU here) has to take into account anything that might happen at any time. It's not a shooter where the computer only has to concentrate on the maths for what is right in front of you at that exact level. It has more in common with a military simulator for behind the scenes number crunching.

I have no doubt that upcoming patches will keep improving the game and making it more of a pleasure to play, but everyone needs to be realistic with their expectations. PC's make the best game machines, but this comes at a price. I have been PC gaming since the days of my 386dx, back in the early 90's, and then we had to know how to fiddle with our machines whether it be memory managers (remember QEMM?)or the configs and autoexec just to get something to load. what i'm trying to say is that PC'S are game machines for the technically minded, they are not game systems as such. A friend of mine also has this game with a similar spec, and it was running poorly, after a clean install of windows, and going through the services.msc (my best friend) he is now playing with frame rates comparable to mine. To the people suffering with this game on less than minimum setups, it may seem unfair to you, but if you want to play this game then you are going to have to beef up your system. Christmas is nearly here what better time for that new chip - it really needs it, or video card. As the old adage goes, "you can't polish a turd"

My system by the way is core2 8200 @3.ghz, 4 gig OCZ800, 9600 gt XXX version

It's as much our fault that this game is utter sh*t as it was your fault that your mother did coke when she was pregnant with you.

Look, if it was due to background programs and processes, then people wouldn't have problems with just this game, it would be problems with every graphics/CPU intensive game, Crysis etc etc, but people don't have problems with those games, not to this degree.

The game is playable on my machine but its the worst performing game i've ever played.. It's a sloppy port that was rushed for christmas, it's really that easy.
