Trick for Nvidia Users to improve FPS(+ smoth)

Seemed to work for me from 20-30fps to 35-45fps at star junction.

However it must be noted that cockstar socialsh*t was not signed in as its down again, this possibly just confirms that its that thats causing some fps issues.

that 1 or so fps change is always there no matter if theres a change to the game or not so there was no difference

this change also made me lose all gun/enviroment sounds the only sounds that worked was the radio... weird

What GPU are you using?

I reckon you are talking out of your BackSide. 10 - 15 fps boost!

go to www.lwgame.net and install DX10 for XP, and you see the difference.

Its possible to remove, using an changer on DX10 secion on this site.

I have used this for much time, and much games like, assasins, crysis, london and others run DX10 on XP.

Downloading something from a russian hacker site is like using a needle from a HIV positive.

people that keep saying they have fps boost from this can YOU PLEASEE PLEASE tell us if it work on XP also ?... tell us whta OS you are using... we don't care about the video card series or processor as it is not relevant in this case.

that is all !

No, it won't work on XP. It's a DirectX 10-related thing, so no.

I noticed some increase in FPS, but only the maximum. It went up to 40 in places but dropped to 11 at night in the rain at Star Junction. Then I upgraded to the beta 3s and it dropped a bit again.

Ok I just tried this on my Phenom 9950 and Nvdia 8800GTX.

Benchmarks are a little lower than they were, but in game things are definetely running a lot faster than they were.. FPS feels much higher..

BUT, I am getting annoying screen tearing now and flickering textures.. The distant skyscrapers over the water look strange.. Good but different to how they were.

I like the speed but the screen tearing is annoying.

Weird hack, but an interesting one.

Apart from the screen tearing the game is flying..

Back to the normal ones for me now though.

I didn't try this with my GTX280, because I might just f*ck up my already good game.

I did try it on my 7300GT, a reasonable FPS increase, but still on low at 1280x1024, and I get like 12-17 FPS. woo.

well, what it does is swap nvidia optimized shaders for ati optimized shaders, so if anything, it should make things worse on nvidia cards. maybe the shaders for ati cards are a little less complex or something, hence the improvement in fps for some, but I wouldn't advise doing that anyway. as for it having to do with DX10 shaders, I highly doubt it: RAGE is a DX9 engine (or 9.1 or whatnot). atidx10 probably stands for ATI DX10 level cards, not DX10 shaders.

nice find, tho.

bidji, the only one here in this 3 pages thread with his brain activated smile.gif

forget it folks, those files are precompiled shaders not textures - mathematical calculations for nice per-pixel-effects like light blooming, shadows, reflections and so on. different gfx cards have different shader capabilities. even cards with the same shader model perform and behave different when using the same calculation. game developers create different shaders files for supported gfx card families to maximise performance and quality and avoid bugged or badly performing shader functions. so using shaders for ati's hdxxxx series of cards on a nvidia cards can lead to:

- a reduced number of gfx effects (effect is implemented in a way the nvidia is not able to calculate)

- wrong calculations leading to graphic glitches or even game crashes

- worse performance because effects are not calculated the most efficient way

check hlsl for details.

True, you shouldent do this, but honestly i dont give a fk, ive been playing the game 3.5 hours now with those shaders and Ive seen a increase in performance, and I havent seen any changes in graphical features or any problems. So until I encounter a problem thats un-acceptable with these shaders im leaving them.

And btw dont use the benchmark, just play ingame and watch the counter, before i had it like 18-26fps, now im getting 21-30fps.

How can that load to FPS improvement? If it was that simpel then Rockstar wouldn't have made the shader/texture-directory's like that.

And nice to post something stupid like that without even a benchmark/picture about the effects in the topicstart.

Next useless fps-improvement-trick-topic please... rolleyes.gif

Well, I've been playing around with this some more and while the peak framerate may not be higher, and I still can't totally rule out the placebo effect, it certainly seems more consistent overall. I'm interested in the results on GTX200 series cards, because who knows which shaders should be better? Yes they aren't ATI cards but they aren't using the same architecture as the Geforce 8s or 9s either, so there are no shaders specifically optimised for them.

GTA4 has NO DX10 engine and thus you'll NOT be able to to activate DX10 by exchanging some shader files. Those are the shader files for ATI cards of the DX10 generation, but they are still DX9 shaders! Additionally i would NOT suggest you to use those shaders with an NVidia card! You might actually see some framerate improvements, but most likely because things don't work as intended and some things just aren't processed.

This is true.

I just tested it on my 8800gts 512, it does indeed give massive fps improvements in some places, but the lighting and particles look like crap. I like the extra fps though, so I will continue to use this.

Hey I just quit GTA to say thank you. I didnt think this would work but it boosted the frame by 10+ frames. Before the 1.1 patch I was getting min frame rate of 25 with high explosive action, then after the frame rate dropped lower and made me a bit sad. With this tweak I had to keep checking if the settings were correct and if the res was right because it was running so smooth. I assume this only works for the 8 series cards, but damn does it work.

Settings:

1680x1050

VDistance: 50

DDistance:50

Traffic: 50

Shader: Highest

Texture: Medium

will try higher now.

I gained an average of 5-8 fps using this. Driving at fast speeds definitely feels smoother, but it seems to reduce texture quality so I'll stick with the regular shaders. Nice find though.

i run the game on High textures/Highest Renderer

1024x768 res i use command line optimization with the shorcut launcher it really does wonders

guys, ive got 8800gt, and i did this renaming stuff, and its really working. I am playing 1680x1050 with textures on high and render quality on high, view distance around 57, distance detail 100.

before renaming when was raining it was hardly playable... and now, ive got a huge boost. i registered just to say that works. ive got the latest drivers and patch.

im really happy that i found this. good luck guys.

I concur, it really does work, I also have a 8800GT and it made my game much more smoother and bumped up the frame rate as well. All in all a good find. colgate.gif

well I've tested this tweak on my rig in combo with the recent update and it does indeed seems to have got rid of laggyness however didnt increase fps and also i notice on benchmarking system ram is now being used much more...up from 55% to 89% also CPU raised from 60% to 73%, plus used in conjuction with the norestrictions command and toally maxed it out, stable at 28fps which is ok i suppose for maxed out...

I've tried it extensively (on a GTX260), and still am not sure about any performance gains. I definitely don't see any graphical changes (compared various screenshots). Which is strange, since ATI shaders should be different from NVidias ...

I've got one little problem: I've been renaming these folders so many times, that I've lost track of the original names. So can anyone tell me if the folder with the file deferred_lighting.fxc and filesize 99158 is nv8 or the one with filesize 97749? TIA!
