Yeah i too have plenty of problems with the game

1:dynamic shadows work for the first 4-5 minutes then disappear

2:stuttering/choppy in some parts of the game

3:freezing and crashing after 30 mins or so

4:texture pop ups galore

I think this is the best way to sum it all up.

I laughed so hard I farted.

I am not at my computer (I'm at work) but my specs are pretty high, and I'm part of the "I play Crysis on Full with no issues" crowd:

4GB MEM (3GB usable at the moment with xp 32-bit)

512 MB 8600GT

AMD 64 X2 5000+ (3.0 ghz dual core)

750GB HDD

With ALL settings turned ALL the way down (except traffic density which I have at 20%, I need CARS DAMMIT) I get semi-playable game. I play it, but it looks horrid. I'm on a 19" widescreen, but I'm running it at 800x600 with the lowest refresh rate to get any kind of FPS. The benchmark approaches 30fps, but only barely. In actual game play, it lags quite a bit. The most frustrating thing is the speed ups-slow downs based on where I'm going. Makes it very distracting.

When driving fast, FPS slows to 10fps.

I'm still playing through the missions none-the-less, so it's playable. But I'm not excited that this game has me thinking of getting new hardware, despite the fact that I've been playing Fallout 3 on almost full settings last week. I mean, come on guys, this is rediculous. According to the benchmark, I'm not using all my video memory, or my cpu. So what's the bottleneck?

BTW- I tried to force antialiasing in the nvidia control panel (yes, the latest beta drivers) and it still doesn't work. No change in FPS, but also- no change in quality either.

Auto-detect settings put the game in an unplayable state. Somewhere around 4 fps. HELLO!?

Rockstar, explain now.

I get an odd feeling that they're not going to fix these issues.

yo.

specs: e6600, 2gb ram, 8800gts 320mb, xp

game settings: 1024x768, texture low, render low, viewdist 1, detaildist 1, car density 30

fps? 15-20.  cool.gif

I have the same system as you do, except CPU which is E6750 and here's what I get:

game settings: 1024x768, texture medium, render highest, viewdist 15, detaildist 100, car density 100

Average FPS of 44.... something's wrong here. I can't see why some people can have stellar performance and others have so many problems with almost exactly the same rigs. Hell I have better performance than some who have Quads and higher GPUs...

What the hell?

I'm not bragging or trying to piss you off, it's just weird...

I'm starting to see a pattern... intel CPU's are running this game better than AMD ones. Seeing a constant stream of people running it great on dual core intel system whilst quad core AMD's are struggling.

I'm one of the lucky ones I guess... getting some reasonable framerates now after more than 2 weeks of tweaking my system and removing things to free up the massive amount of resources this game requires... My benchmarks are a constant 37-38fps at [email protected] textures at medium, render quality highest, distance detail 62, everything else maxed at 100 and shadows at 16.

But that translates to around 20-30fps in game depending on the activity on screen... and like everyone else, there is no change from 800x600 upwards with everything set to it's lowest. I have tried every combination that my vid card and monitor will support. I have tried the majority of user fixes and very few of them have made any difference. The patch broke more stuff than it fixed for me.

I swear that it's only because I have 8GB ram and have tweaked my pagefiles to optimise their usefulness to the max that I am not getting more crashes and simply running out of resources.

Sorry that's BS, my AMD quad core is getting roughly the same fps as an Intel, maybe a little less. I get 45fps playing at 1440x900, Medium-High and everything else at default.

The game has memory leaks every where and at random areas of the map. My system specs:

P5Q Deluxe

Q9450 @ 3.85GHZ

2X 2GB G-Skill DDR2 1066 @ 1156MHZ~

3X WD 160GB 16MB Cache SATAII Drives in RAID 0

2 4870 1GB Cards @ 820 / 925 a piece.

I still get random out of memory crashes and if you start getting 4 FPS , do this little trick and watch the magic happen. Press alt+tab and get to your desktop, sit there for a second, go back into game, uh.. whats this? OMG your FPS are not at 4 any more, I wonder why????? Video memory leak...... God damn stupid coders. I wish there was a little program to refresh the memory "on the video card" in game so I wouldn't have to do this to get the memory back. Besides for that I have seen peoples faces and whole heads off of their bodies in this game?? That is pathetic coding at it's worst.. and yes after the patch.

I am uploading a video to youtube right now where I stumbled upon a glitch and wanted to share it with every one. . I got tossed underground by a glitched out helicopter. I was getting good FPS at the time as well and was running in 1920x1200 high settings and 90fps at one point. I will post the link up when it gets done. Also i noticed that my default speed didn't change for my second graphics card, I thought it changed also when you change the first ones speed so, a little fib yes tounge2.gif . Here is a little something for ya.

I think i've tried just about EVERY trick in the book to get my fps up and all have failed... truly sad because I really wanted to play this and it was gunna be 'the' game for me for months so I wouldn't go out and spend more money... but now it seems that i'll have to wait for another game to release and i'll have wasted 50$ on this game because I haven't been able to enjoy it to the fullest...

I have tried many of the tweaks here. Kudos to those who tried to help this joke of a port put out by R*. However, each day I see myself less interested in the game and playing time decreasing. I actually hope this trend continues, because I would like to reach a point in which I just don't give a f*ck about IV and the $50 I wasted, and never look back.

I would like to know how much Ram everyone that is posting has, I am thinking because the memory leak is SO big that its crushing our 2gig ram... because everyone i've seen with 4gig have been running fine..

I have 2gig

Fine for about an hour tounge.gif . Then it crashes on me as well. My memory sucks up almost instantly though. It is the video memory leak that gets me how ever. icon13.gif

I have 2gig

I also have 2gigs, the missing textures/memory leaks/FPS slowing down to a crawl happens within minutes usually.

I experience random (as far as i can tell) freezes and lockups that manage to knock out vista, requiring reboot.

the funny thing is that at random times of actually starting the game up it'll run fine but when I shut it down and play again hours later its back to being horrible... so unstable sad.gif

Did you try what I suggested up above some where, about alt+tabbing out to the desktop then going back in after a few seconds to see if it stops?. I to have noticed at random times it will glitch out peeps. I got that video uploaded but, will have to post it later when I get off work tounge.gif.

I do not understand.

I have a [email protected] on Vista x64 running the game on a 8800GT512 MB and 4GB Corsair Dominator (pretty fast memory) on a Asus Rampage Gamer board. All installed on 4x320GB Spinpoint Samsung software raid0. GTA IV is installed at different partition from Vista. Load times are fast. Now this a pretty nice system and I am happy with it but my point is it is not a future system. I assembled this begin 2008 and even then I could go for a better vid. Later before buying GTA IV I was thinking to specially upgrade my video card (for GTA4). At the moment no way.

My Vista is tweaked down to 30 services and 325 threads are open before I load the game. (This is a really good tweaked clean system) I run totally nothing else then needed in the background. No virus scanner neither at moment of playing.

Further I have set my settings to high/very high in options and made the few known commandline.txt tweaks. No restrictrions etc. But for instance not even the audio nor vblanc tweak. The game runs very smooth here between 35 and 45 fps outside, in action, all weathers, spots places. No stutter. Motionblur on/off does not affect also. Vehicle density 50. View 60. Distance 100. All played at [email protected]

But hey what is going on? Why it runs so great on my rig?

I post this specially cause I am trying to help out friends with lot better rigs and done some testing and gathered some info last week. I want to know cause spending lot of more time on it would be a waste if it will not be better in the future anyways no mather what which hardware, drivers etc one got.

There are a few possibilities left IMO. To name two of them:

1, the game will not run a lot better EVER cause it is simply not designed for (port story). 2, all drivers and software need to be solved to get it better. Cause a rushed game, rushed patch, rushed drivers?

Time will tell like always :<

friend, I envy you... there is the 4gig ram again, I am gunna have to go on a shopping spree on newegg yet again, and I even promised myself i wouldnt ever upgrade my comp for years... R* fix this memory leak so I can spend more of my money on your games instead of computer hardware

Hello Rockstar .. why do you don't answer ?!?! Do you don't wont to expose with the truth of the recommended hardware requirements ???

If resolution or detail changes don't improve your FPS it's very likely that your CPU is the bottleneck. If you read other threads on this subject you'll see that GTA IV is a pretty CPU intensive game (most likely due to the architecture change from the consoles -- the PowerPC for the XBox 360, the Cell for the PS3 and the x86 for the PC). Both consoles have a pretty good CPU (and a pretty bad GPU by today's standards) so it seems the majority of the calculations is offloaded to the CPU; hence the Quad Core recommendation for the PC. I don't know if this is going to change in any future PC patches ... but I won't get my hopes up.

R* should take care of this and changed things before port the game. They know that on PC's graphic card proccess a big amount of graphics and all the power on PC gaming is on GPUS not CPUS anymore.

That's why NVIDIA and ATI invests money on GPUS and SLI. That's why we left behind graphic Cards with just a chipset and video RAM , and we have graphic cards with powwer GPU wich can work on SLI or tri-SLI mode to increase graphic performance. So to let CPU to do other things.

So a company when port a game for PCs and has in mind the CPU, means that usually thinks CONSOLE gamers and don't mind about PC gamers.

If they did, could use a different engine to create a whole new GTA IV for PC using all the power of the graphic cards ,so we all had a better experience.
