Why GTAIV doesn't work

It's called a niche...

It's been designed with the PC gamer in mind. The PC gamer and the console gamer are two different animals.

The PC gamer is an enthusiast who takes pride in his rig. They buy graphics cards, and high performance memory. They overclock, and use watercooling. They run benchmarks and stress tests. They drool over things like aftermarket cooling, L2 cache, and tight RAM timings. They are the people you call to fix your PC when you f*cked it up.

When a game like GTAIV comes out, the PC gamer dreams of pushing it to it's limit with newer or overclocked hardware. Generally, the PC gamer has more disposable income to spend on their rig. Rockstar gets this, and so do a lot of PC game makers. They purposely make it so that you need a sick system to run their games. Then, they go a few steps further and make sure that you need a REALLY sick computer to run at MAX settings. It's a niche market.

The console gamer just wants to pop it in and play. He says, "I payed $300 for this thing and I should be able to play any game that they release for it!" And he is right. He should--and can--play games that are released for it. He should stick to his console.

Unfortunately, the console gamer also applies this philosophy to his PC. In some cases the console gamer's PC cost more than his xbox or ps3. The ways PC's are marketed, it's very easy to think you are getting a great gaming rig, when in fact you aren't. These things are best left to the PC enthusiasts.

So that's Rockstar's evil secret. They made a kick-ass game for all the 360 and ps3 owners. Then, they made a great game for the PC enthusiasts who have the time, money, and know-how to use the game now and eventually push it to it's limits and MAX out all settings.

If you fit into the category of PC enthusiast/gamer, then you know what I'm talking about. If not, then please uninstall GTAIV and fire up your console version.

...Me? I own an Xbox360 and the rig you see in my sig. I sold my 360 copy of GTAIV, picked up the PC version, and would never look back. For those who have the means, the PC version is the ONLY way to play GTAIV. Otherwise, stick to the console. Nothing wrong with that though. The console version still kicks ass!

BTW, to the people who have Anti-Rockstar signatures:

Are you seriously telling me that when the next GTA comes out for console that you won't buy it? Bullsh*t. I'll see you all at the next midnight launch!

Not really, it's just that your thread isn't interesting to read, let alone to respond to.

But, there is some truth in it though.

Console is the easy standard downgraded way to play this. You get what you pay for, no more, no less.

PC version takes some tweaking, patching and modding to reach it's full potential, but when it does, it blows the consoles right out of the water.

You should know that there are people that can run the game well with reasonably good computers (take a look at the Social Club TV). It's just the game's performance is not consistent.

it IS the truth. the average console gamer just doesn't understand this concept.

the game's performance my not be consistent on "reasonably good computers" because it's not designed for "reasonably good computers."

It's designed for the niche market to enjoy. I know it sounds bad, but n00bs need not apply when it comes to PC gaming.

I agree. Most of the whinning about bad performance is usually specs related. Not the game.

So why don't they whine about this with every game.

Its just that gta iv is poorly optimized and Toronto havent even checked the game properly for bugs.

Its just a shoddy game

i just so happen to be in the niche market that this game(pc version) was made for. i'm a pc enthusiast. you say elitist because you just don't get it.

every pc game has spec related issues. it just so happens that this is the biggest game of all time. can you imagine if halo had come out on PC? it'd be the same "mess" that everyone(n00bs) says this game is.

Drop your uneducated elitism, the fact here is that this game (just like the 3 previous ones) is a console game ported for the PC (in 7 months).

This game and all the technology in it was "designed" to push the latest consoles to the max, not the PC. The game doesnt use PC hardware efficiently because it wasnt programed for the PC in the first place. IV doesnt even warm up your GPU.

If you think you have alot because you get 30 fps on this i have news for you, you could have 60 fps, you could have better graphics (those shadows eww), you could have a DX10 render mode, you could have antialiasing but you dont.. and you wont.

IV is just like SA, my previous PC was far more powerfull and capable than a PS2, but the game was made primarily for the PS2 so my eyes had to get used to that, end of story.

And you claim that the PC gamer buys this and this and that.. well this PC gamer doesnt buy this and this and that.. i do the research and keep up with whats out there (software and HW) but when i upgrade i buy future proof components to get the most out of my hardware/money, i dont buy hardware to paste on sigs or to brag about frame rates on the internet, i buy it to game with and enjoy my games.

IV could run on mid range specs, if it was developed properly for the PC it would be scalable and more people would buy it and enjoy it (at lower settings) but if R* were to build IV for the PC from scratch we would have to wait alot more than 7 months, it would take so long that it wouldnt even be worth it.

You came here trying to representing PC gamers but you failed miserably, dont do it again.

Thank you sigh.gif .

Stupid post, I'm a PC enthusiast, work on computers for a living just as you posted. I specifically upgraded my hardware because i read the requirements way before the game was release. I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING WITH PCS AND I KNOW HOW TO OPTIMIZE, I'M NOT A f*ckING CONSOLE GAMER AND THIS GAME STILL DOESN'T WORK WORTH A sh*t. those who get it to run properly because of the extreme rare hardware setup... congratulations. not every f*cking person who is having problems are people who "dont" know what they are doing.

It's does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that GTA IV for PC Sucks plain and simple

my thoughts exactly. and another thing...

if a console-gamer's game doesn't work, he returns it. if a pc-gamer's game doesn't work, he goes out of his way to make it work (or work even better). in my eyes, pc-gamers are superior to all you console junkies out there for that sole reason.

I had my suspicions that this guy was an anal recluse, and this thread confirms those thoughts.

BTW, Mr ThinksHe'sGod'sGiftToPCGaming... you are the last person people will want to call on when they've fcked-up their PC. You'll probably OC their CPU as a way around the slowdowns they're experiencing due to spyware infection, but hey... what do you care? At least you can brag to yourself that you Uber'd that illin' rig. Man.

I myself refuse to settle for sub-standard graphics and performance like that of console gaming. PC is the way to play games.

dude, no. i'm a computer nerd with a decent gaming rig, and that's it.

i'm simply pointing out the way that the PC gaming industry works.

and, spyware infections supplement my income. i make about an extra $50-100/week fixing pc's that are infected.

also, i've never overclocked any cpu except for my own. that would be totally irresponsible.

i do apologize if i came off that way. however, what i have posted is the truth. the average console gamer is simply not welcome in the world of pc gaming. as you can see by looking around this board, it is filled with people who lack computer knowledge and/or the right hardware.

that is a FACT of pc gaming. the best games will NOT run very well(if at all) on mainstream systems.

how is it "smug," or "arrogant," if a lot of people could do the same by purchasing moderately priced hardware?

i'm not rubbing salt in the wound. i'm saying: go play console, or upgrade your pc. that's the reality of pc gaming.
