Sorry what does that have to do with how SLI and available vram works? Please don't insult my intelligence like that - That game caches the video memory to your available system ram when there's not enough free ram on your vid card, it takes it from there that's why lower mem cards like the gx2's have that horrible hitching/microstutter bug at high res modes - Thats actually "smart" programming by crytek leting you have max settings without a huge memory leak and performance hit (although that's debatable) but prior to the first patch people where getting memory leaks galore just like in GTA IV.

Check nvidia control panel and go into system information and see how much "available" graphics memory you have it,it should be more than double the actual vram on your cards if you have enough ram, because it takes into account the free system memory available for data fetching.

The introduction of dx 10 cards actually touts this feature as being more efficient than previous generations, but thats not what im discussing now - Just because you posted a picture of crysis eating up your ram doesnt mean jack...the fact remains that SLI mode doesn't work the way you are stating..for a computer performance analysis engineer programmer fairy god mother you sure don't have a clue kid...

No razor thats exactly what i was getting at , it caches the data in system ram if there isnt enought v-ram

when running an app regardless if you have enough vram or not , it WILL us up memory in form of system ram , and if you reach above 80% system ram it will start to pagefile on HDD the app cant not use up to a certain amount of memory it will just get the memory some where else , what i was getting at is yes in sli you will use more than 512mb of vram , unlike what whathisface said ,

the only reason why i wanted the picture up is becuz some guy said it was inncorrect , not you , him i told him sli will use ram on the secon cardl, picture proves , and btw i in no way shap or form ment to say you wernt intellingent i was dissing the other guy not you

but btw your insults are kinda funny lol suicidal.gif

But like it matters , with the GX2 i git a total of 1 gigabit mem band with , 2100mhz total , @ 1 gigabyte , so far no game has come cloes to pushing thos spec , now razor i assume your one of the 280GTX owners , correct me if im worng , jw what is the specs on that , im not trying to be a dick or nuttin i really am just wondering ?

I'll let you in on a little secret it's 1 gigabyte of memory not 1 gigabit, you do know the difference right? Btw whats a "mem band" i hope you are reffering to memory bandwidth because it's not 1 gigabyte or even 1 gigabit for that matter the gx2 is actually 512-bit total and 256 bit per card with 1gb total video ram but 512mb per card once again...The harsh reality is that only 1 card's data width (256bit) and 1 cards on board video ram (512mb) only get used because SLI mode stores actual game data textures framebuffer etc only on the primary while the secondary cards job is essentially to clone that of the first and no actual game data can be used (only to communicate with the first card, means of communication are via SLI bridge and data lanes over pci-e). Also whats the 2100mhz total you are referring to? do you mean how fast the memory is? Then yes your video ram is ddr3 2100mhz effective...

Anyway because your cards are essentially a "sandwich" (2 pcb's slapped together) and works exactly like SLI because of it's nature, you WONT get the bus width and memory advertised, im sorry to break it to you but thats the way the cookie crumbles .cookie.gif

Im sure you are worried now and thinking "omgz but why have a second card if it doesnz do jax"?

There is an actual upside to this also (otherwise why SLI right?), what you DO get is double the GPU performance, much like multicore processor and double the cores (sp's etc) and THAT's why you get a performance increase .

So i have a 2x gtx280's, so that's 1 gpu, 240 shader cores with 1gb ddr3 2.5ghz vid ram and 512 bit bus for 1 card and second card with exact same specs.

Now this is SLI mode = 2 gpu's, 480 shader cores with total 1gb ddr ram running @ 2.5ghz with a bit-width of 512...get it? the only thing that get's double is the processing power not ram or data bus...

Yes, in practice SLI does not double your vram, but if 1 card renders 1 frame and the second card renders the next frame and so on, doesn't that pretty much mean you have double the memory available for processing? Or to put it in another way, your 512mb card only has to do half the work. Why isn't this reflected in GTA, and also why doesn't GTA use available system memory to boost the amount of memory you have to "spend" on your graphic settings. It's really making me angry that system resources are being wasted and if I exceed what is allowed I get crazy popups. I think this proves that Rockstar will release that future patch for SLI and hopefully better memory usage.

Sorry it took me so long to reply i was playing GTA again , its addicting ,

k razor i know what your sayign but yes everything he said is true EXCEPT the fact that yes each one of my 9800's is a 512 megabit memoryinterface , im sure you would like to argue this but it is ,

AHH HAA i know what your thinking of , 9800GX2 , it has 4 vram chips , 2 on each card each 256mb w/ 256 bit interface

512 bit interfce per card , and yes 1 gigabit interface per car d,

if you use up the vram on both card then yes you are using both interface's thats just how hardware works , it doesnt magiclly skip the connecting interface to write to the available ram (vram) with each chip having a 525mhz speed , collectively you get 1050mhz operation speed 2100mhz total

if each chip had (256 chip) had only a 128bit inter face that would be too slow , far to slow to achive 45 fps on crysis 16x12 res

the memory would operate to slowly , 128bit interface dates back to the 6600gt and the 6800gt, 6800ultra have 2 256mb chips at 128bit interface total of 256bit interface

Yes this is true in all except in GX2 cases , the Gx2 has both cards in on bus , one lane if u will

benefits are , instead of sending odd and even frames for individual cards to process ,

with the gx2

Not with nvidia recommended

but set as single gpu sli enable

both gpus work collectively sending odd and even PACKETS to the gpus , a much more effeicnt way of processing , so yes in theroy like have a dual core gpu , thats why i got the GX2 instead of 2 280's , however 2x280's in later games will be more effective,

but i wanted two gpus on one lane for this particual reason

k well the i figure , alot like IMing , i could care less about proper spelling , n all that , didnt think it would be all that important to you gamers . i guess my bad grammer rubbed you wrong , sorry for that , and yes i always hated english class,

all that writing and no typing , all those paper's and no processors memory chip , no megahertz , i hated school , not to mention the teachers were computer illiterate.

I dunno, I'm quite new here so I'm not a cookie.gif expert.

I do know that TruXter teaches lessons about technical PC stuff while none of his knowledge makes sense.

Regardless of whether the guy is right or wrong, speaking of his bad grammar has no weight in the debate of whether he's right or wrong, and stating that in the context of 'counter-argument' (or at least in that kind of tone of voice) is completely stupid and a sign of 'nothing else to say'.

ESPECIALLY considering the grammatical requirements of an internet forum for GTA in a thread that debates graphics hardware, or lack thereof actually.

I HATE it when people lose track of their own stance and go into 'well your mama's fat' mode.

ok now nvidia added the sli support but that does not change the fact that the game is not utilizing it. I have a 9800 gx2 and stiil able to use 492 of 1 GB only!

For ANY SLI GPU you count the video ram size by how much ram each ONE GPU has access to, not how much total video ram is installed. So for the 9800 GX2, while it has a total video ram of 1Gb, each GPU has access to ONLY 512Mb and that is what the system will report as being available.
