Call for a public apology from Rockstar Games

Goddamnit, it's business, not personal!!! No one is going to hold your hand and say "I'm sorry you didn't meet our system requirements, there there little baby". No thread, lawsuit or anything is going to change that either. It's consumers like the thread starter that make retail a living f*cking hell to work in too.

What about the tens of thousands of consumers who are having the same error I have, on god-like systems?

I can't even count how many other random crashes, bugs, glitches, and missing texture issues are in the tech support thread.

Are there no official forums?

Read the user comments here:

http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/grand-theft-auto-iv/935454p1.html

http://www.amazon.com/Grand-Theft-Auto-IV-...28950176&sr=8-1

I'm also not sure how going from 2.0Ghz to 2.4Ghz would have solved the crashing on game startup.......I still cannot fix that. Probably every fourth attempt I can get to the main menu, to see if any tweaks I have made would let me get into the game. Still a no-go.

Then they wait until the patch is released, if it doesn't work, then bitch. I'm not unsympathetic to people who can't run the game, it sucks, I know, but crying lawsuit or demanding a hand holding session from Rockstar isn't going to change the fact at all. Your way of making a serious call for action on their part is a lot more reasonable than the thread starter. I'm not discrediting genuine frustrated people. I've worked retail before, so I have an ideal what these angry consumers do to voice their anger. They tend to be total inconsiderate dumbasses who don't know if their asses are punched or bored but claim to know everything. Sort of like the thread starter. That ain't a shot at you at all or the people genuinely hit by the performance issues, it's aimed at the holier than thous who demand sh*t yesterday instead of waiting like everyone else.

I totally Agree 100% here this game is broken basically my problem is that it limits what settings and resolution i can go for now that is sad when as a PC gamer you dont have the freedom to tweak the game for performance the freedom that console gamers dont have i have built my own computers and also do tune ups on Operating Systems i can run age of conan almost maxed same with fallout 3 , farcry 2, gears of war, Call of duty world at war and so on currently using a gaming laptop with SLI enabled and i'm aware that is not supported for this game that is very sad

now is not the time to screw up when the economy is a bit shaky and come to think of it that is one of the reasons also because they push the product ahead of schedule because of a deadline in the future this will come with a price because gamers will not spend the money on crap that is not done correctly , i gave 50 dollars away for this game and hope this is fixed.

While, I don't have the same anger as the op...I do have the same exact system he has.  After some extreme tweaking I got this to playable standards of course everything was on low.  But it was playable, unfortunately this was not good enough for me as I kept tweaking trying to squeeze every last drop of performance out of my system, until I made it worse than what I started out with  suicidal.gif

So I start again, and have yet to get it back to where it was but i'm getting there.  For this game to run on this system you have to have the 180.70 drivers 180.84 screwed everything up.  The drivers that alienware provides are complete trash.  use the command lines, use amd fusion, set priority to high...these are all things I was doing and got it playable...hopefully the patch will help.

Hi Central,

I honestly don't know much about computers, but it is encouraging that you've gotten the game to a playable state if we have the same system!

According to device manager, I have the most current driver already installed.

It says the version is: 7.15.11.5663

I'm nervous about downloading freeware applications to tweak the cache or some other things I've been seeing in the threads. Please be patient with me: What exactly does amd fusion do?

Does alienware still actively support our model driver-wise? I called tech-support a few weeks ago to inquire about upgrading my system, and they said they no longer service the m9700.

I believe this game could be amazing, once it is finished by Rockstar.

Yeah, alienware doesn't really support the drivers very well, it took them almost a year to get a driver out that supported SLI in Vista.

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers

Here is a link for the most current drivers that will work with our system, these the regular drivers desktops use with a modded .inf file. So use at your own risk.

They show the 180.84 driver available but resist the temptation and stick with the 180.70 driver they have, this will solve alot of your problems, at lest it did for mine.

The site that is listing these is actually a pretty good resource for people with laptops.

Something else I did was to use arctic silver, I don't think I would recommend this though unless you are comfortable completely taking apart your laptop.

Somethings to stay away from

-ntune...This did nothing but freeze my system everytime.

-amd overdrive...does not work with our cpu.

-180.84 driver...again, messed up all my hard work.

I'm really not satisfied with the game or the perfomance.

But I think this topic is pretty pointless.

If we REALLY want to show Rockstar that we are not 1%, than we have to do something more organized.

What I sugest is one of those online petitions. The good thing is that we can ask people who are having problemas to put their signatures on it. And the good thing is that we can put a link to it in various forums.

If someone decides to do it, than the text must be really well done, and with no offenses or things like that. Just explain the problem with details.

If you bothered to look at teh README.TXT, you would've seen that there's a way around the resolution/texture quality limit. You can do it, but it'll cause problems when your resources go in to the red.

Those options will only go to higher settings if you have the vram to handle it, otherwise you get anomalies. Persaonally i think it's a was good idea - if they had not done that, then many peopel woudl be in here bitching that they gets pop-in textures, but don't know why...

As for the poll.. where was it from? if it was from anything like THIS site, then it's heavily biased. I'm pretty sure that the marority for whom the game works fine will no way come to a forum such as this. They just play.

Polls are nothing without information like who was polled, how many were polled, margins of error, what group, what region, etc.

(sadly, no one at CNN or Fox news knows this)

And why ask for DAILY updates on a patch, anyway? Th emore tim anyoen spends on here, the less time they have do spend on patching. Daily updates woudl be USELESS. Even if they DID give frquent upadtes, thet'd be inudated with stupid requests and questions, followed by more bitching.

Anyone that buys a brand-new product before reading of it and letting it mature is pretty dumb. I oreder my copy months ahead, but still decided to downlaod it AFTER I read whiney complaints of the forums. It ran well enough - so i bought a copy.

RESEARCH before you buy!

Yes, i play on XP Pro SP3. Vista has shown nothing but useless poo to me. I'll wait for the next OS. (well, a year AFTER next OS, to let the kinks out)

As much as some of us do over-exaggerate, i do think that the whole problem could have been sorted with BETA testers,

a lot of people have got problems and Rockstar did say that the 1% of problems was reported by phone and NOT by forum.

I would however agree that an apology be made from Rockstar as they have screwed up big time in the release of this game... I would not however go as far as to refuse to buy any more of their products as they do release some very good (and compatable) games for PC... Or are we forgetting that they also developed Max Payne 2 and will also be Developing Max Payne 3!!!!

If the patch works then good.. if not then i think its time that we tried something else.

Great! Another whiny idiot made a thread about how much he hates R*. Stop this sh*t already. We just don't care. Go cry to your mother or something. Jesus, this forum is flooded with morons lately...

THIS is a forum where we can discuss about this game. In a GOOD or in a BAD way.

Am I a moron if I am pissed of because i've spent 50€ for a game that basically doesn't work even if I meet the minimum requirements? I don't think I am. I don't think WE are.

By the way. Somebody said that laptop users shouldn't complain about bad performances.

Well... on GTA box there isn't any kind of warning related to a laptop...i mean.. on Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (example) box there's a line which says "Notebook versions of these video card are not officially supported and the game MAY not work". Many other games have this text on the back of the box.

GTA IV doesn't.

So it's not true that laptops are not supported. Or at least...it's not written on the box, which is the only source i have in the store to understand if my pc (notebook) can run a game or not.

So...since I have a dual core 1.83 and a 7900 vga... i WANT the game run smoothly at the minimum details, because I'm meeting the requirements. If this isn't possible or they simply forgot to tell people that laptops are not supported, it's my right to have my money back even if i registered my copy.

I don't think it's whining or somewhat. It's just my right, and it's their fault.

Do you have a brain that works? If you do, go fetch it for us all. Thankyou.

Its actually people like you that piss everyone off because you think that, because your game works everyone should stfu, that whining will get nothing done, and insulting people is the way to go.

Mate, your looking at a 2 way street here, either stfu and play the game like your supposed to, or HELP us make a difference by getting R* to do something.

Don't come in here b*tching about how there are so many whine threads, or I'll fly over to America or wherever you live just to break your computer and snap your GTA IV disk.

You say the forums have been flooded with morons? So your referring to the 60-75% of gamers who play this game are morons? Big mistake there, buddy.

Thank you Cinstral!!!

I called Alienware tech-support again, I don't know what I'm doing so I asked them about that link about and told them my problems/situation. They were kind enough to send me exactly what I needed over email, which I hope they put on their website for everyone! I use AlienHive so I don't make mistakes (Be patient with me! LoL, if I get in trouble I probably won't know how to fix it and would have to ship back to factory, so I do the free call first instead of experiment).

The game still loads a blank screen usually BUT

It loaded for the first time because of these new drivers!!

And then quickly crashed:

After having to make several more attempts to get past that blank screen, the second time I loaded it up I saw this:

And this is exactly what my friend saw with a brand new custom-built machine from a local computer hobby shop. This is definitely not any problem with my system now, I'm seeing exactly what others are seeing and reporting. I know you mentioned you got through many bugs on your own, did you ever experience this one? How'd you get past it?

I'm certainly not qualified to be taking apart my laptop, but I really, really appreciate your response and that link. Its good to know that eventually, I will get this thing running. Though, I will wait a few days and see if the patch addresses my problem before attacking it with cache tweaks or whatever, which I feel I shouldn't have to do. To double check, Fallout 3 is still running on my system great with no problems at all.

Btw, is this what your main menu looks like?

Something tells me that isn't right.

I know this isn't a tech support thread, this is a thread to get a product recall. However, this is a good example of what many of us are experiencing right now, perhaps even the majority of users. I for one was quietly reading forums like this looking for help before finally registering. Many are experiencing these problems. Rockstar either knew about this, or did not beta test whatsoever, as someone above said.

Hopefully things will be better in a few weeks, because I'm effectively stuck with my purchase.

THANK YOU AGAIN Cinstral!!! And especially for being patient and understanding that most of us are like with our cars: We have no idea how they work, we just know that we need to get the oil changed every few thousand miles.

Thats not the fault of R* if you have a misconfiguration of your system. Take a look in your bios and adjust CPU FAN Speed, clean your FAN or open your case so that the heat can get away from your cpu.

it could be R* fault if GTA IV is the only program/game that causes him this kind of problem.

By the way... GTA IV is REALLY using CPU, so you should try to cool it the best you can...

Hi ste_fc,

Interestingly I've heard many say on this forum that the game is only utilizing 60-70% of their CPU and even less for their GPU. Unknown if this will be addressed in the patch. Cause unknown.

On my QuadCore Intel 6600 I have ~85% on all cores. Thats a very effective code as running threads needs to wait sometimes to synchronize data in memory etc. pp.

If a system gets overheated it can never be the problem of the coder. Its a design problem in the system or the CPU is corrupt.

I started out where you are at now...the drivers I metioned cleared that up for me...The only difference I can think of (and I may not be right) is I have done a few complete wipes back to the way it was sent to me from the factory (to clear stuff out) that may be what has helped me.

UNfortunately I haven'teen able to lockdown what exactly I did to get it working before but right now I'm getting terrible fps, I have done a few things but that is for only fps increase...one thing you might try is installing the 180.60 drivers instead of the 180.70 drivers from the link I sent you. that may do the trick.

Q_Q

Thats all I have to say about this topic QQ. Rockstar already apologized and they already said they would gradually fix numerous issues. The game hasent been out for a month! Look at the numerous games that to date are still getting patches. Games that have been out nearing 2-3 years. Company of Heroes, a excellent game with numerous optimization issues, multiplayer lag, bugs, tweeks etc. Yet relic still releases patches for it and thousands of people loved the game and still play it. Dont say that other games dont have problems when they get released, its because they always delayed there games and if the game was sucessful they always released patches. Its people that cry about how it got delayed and whining on fourms about how badly they wanted this game and its not out yet, and saying "its not fair the console got it first! wa wa wa" Thats when it gets rushed and turns into barf8bd.gif . Then you get your poorly tested games and poorly optimization crap game. So dont blame it on R* Toronto they've only been working on it since just before the release of the Console Versions. Only 50 guys working on it. Thats alot of work, especially the extras that they gave us: better graphics and new/better features, Multiplayer supporting 32 players! So please dont give us your BS. If you dont like the pc version. Buy your self a Xbox 360 or a PS3 and buy the game. Otherwise shutup WE DONT CARE!

For those people that cant even run the game yet cause of errors I feel sorry for ya, just hang on! Im sure there are solutions! There just hiding.

My version is just barly working. But I'm happy, I love GTA IV and enjoying the game. I will definatly get the next GTA when it comes. Ill support R* until the end! They havent let me down before and still havent! Good work R* heres a cookie. cookie.gif

BUT

WTF?

Company of Heroes worked fine when I first played it 2 years ago, there was hardly any major technical issues with the game. So what if games have been patched years and years after it was released? That has NOTHING to do with the fact that GTA4 has MASSIVE technical issues at release. Starcraft still gets patched, year after year, it's been 10 years now. Nobody ever considered Starcraft to be buggy at release.

IGN PC wrote an article and did an interview with Rockstar Toronto... ENTIRELY because of technical issues, I have NEVER seen any other game receive so much attention because of technical issues. And no, it's not because GTA4 is such a popular game.

Company of Heroes receives lots of patches because it's a RTS, most of the patches deal with balancing issues. The game was considered to run very well on a vast diversity of machines.
