Maybe they should change that "significant performance improvements" line in the news on the gta4.net

I got 2-3fps ... veeeery significant suicidal.gificon13.gif

The new drivers seems to have fixed my freezing problem, the game used to lockup at least once a minute, sometimes much more, and would stay frozen for anywhere between 1-5 seconds. Occasionally I could blindly grope around task manager and kill the gtaiv.exe process, other times the whole machine would need to be rebooted.

So far in the minimal testing I've done with 8.12 I don't have these freezes. I never had tried the beta drivers myself.

Considering this driver update was more or less completed BEFORE GTA4 was released, that's not bad at all.

This was 1 of a 2 part driver update that promised significant performance boost. The other being 9.1 coming early next year, considering this updated added roughly 5-15% increases across the board and 9.1 was said to have "even more gaming performance than 8.12" if in the end we wind up with 9.1 being 10-25% across the board higher performance than 8.11 was, I'd say we did well.

That said, MOST of GTA4's issues are client side (see R* needs to patch) not driver related.

Worked great with the 8.11 drivers on my computer, E8400, HD4850 and 3gigs of ram. Now I installed the new drivers, got a little fps boost, also my game now looks like this: user posted image

Anyone know what could be causing this?  suicidal.gif

Oh dear. That doesn't make me want to install and try this driver.

Did you remove your previous driver, use a driver cleaning prog in safe mode and then install the new driver?

It sures does, specially when he never posted:

PC specs

OS used

if he properly uninstalled the old drivers 1st

whether or not he is also using a 4rd party program for his video card

what kind of video card he has

did he tweak something in CCC

etc

sarcasm.gif

In all honestly for all we know this could be user error. icon13.gif

Edit:

check in CCC if your mipmap detail level is set to HIGH QUALITY

EDIT#2: Okay, it works now with high quality mipmap ^^ thanks

Oh wait, it was user error.

As far as I remember ATI never said anything about GTA4 performance or bugs, so I think it's normal for us not to see any improvments on this Cat. release. Just remember that was the bullsh*t fed to us by official R* spokesperson. So R* is to blame for this situation. They said with the new ATI drivers we would see an improvement.

He's a R* spokesperson, not an ATI spokesperson.

When he tells you to expect a performance increase with new ATI drivers, why would you believe him?

Is it true that vista members can simply install new ATI drivers over the old ones (not go to safe mode run gazillion programs there and reboot their computer 63827 times)?

The thing is I didn't but from what I read on this topic it seemed like people were expecting that improvement. So I was just stating the facts. Ppl shouldn't blame ATI for this, that's another screw up on R* part.

I would use ATI uninstall program whenever uninstall ATI drivers. Bottom line, no ifs, ands or buts about it.

I simple go to: X:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\UninstallAll

and uninstall my old cats, reboot then install the new cat drivers (reboot if it tells me to). It's as simple as that people!!!

I'ma play it smart and hold out on it.

I'ma wait for some results from people who played the game with the patch using this catalyst.

Can't afford to f*ck up my laptop (even though I backed it up, but who's saying that my pc will give me the chance to restore if it messes up). monocle.gif

8.12 gave me a little boost in fps, I haven't run the benchmark yet because I think it's a stupid way to judge the game's performance.

I do my judgement in actual gameplay, and for me it reduced texture pop-up etc. and made the game run a bit smoother. I'm satisfied for now (it ran well enough before, bit better now), still waiting for the patch and january driver update.

I installed new drivers.

Yes, it is definately better now, although I was also lucky week ago, when I installed gta4. No big problems. The interesting thing was, that the game started with new graphic settings. They were much higher than the ones I was playing with, but the framerate is same. There was some flickering before and the problem has almost gone away.

That happens after running the benchmark, doesn't have anything to do with the drivers.

Just restart GTA and DON'T run the benchmark, then they will be visible again.

Everytime you run the benchmark, all the text like that is gone in singleplayer.

And it didn't seem to really give any FPS boost, but it feels like it's running smoother now.
