Total System Freeze When Playing GTA IV

Just throwing a me too onto this thread. Usually crashes shortly after the loading screen with the characters on first run, then on second run it gets into the game. Sometime after that, it could be 10 minutes or could be 3 hrs, I get the same crash. For me it's always diagonal lines on my display.

C2D 6400

2GB Ram

Nvidia 7950

XP

All up to date, been through all the major struggles with the game, yadda yadda. Game runs great when it works (after MUCH hassle) but these crashes seem to be coming more frequently as I progress in the game. As other posters in this thread my PC is rock solid on other modern games and stressful use, temperatures are in check, everything is honkey-dorey except gta4.

I have this aswell. I can play sometimes 3, sometimes 10, sometimes 14 minutes, then BAM, my screen turns black (or I get my screen full of rectangles), sometimes the sound continues, sometimes it doesn't.

This is really ununderstandable, because one day, I could play 45 minutes without ANY problems at all. confused.gif

I have an ATI radeon 4800 series, 2GB ram, Intel Core 2 duo 3.16 ghz and XP (or something like that)

My computer is only 1 month old.

I had this EXACT same problem and I have fixed it.

I tried EVERYTHING from updating all drivers, to uninstalling and trying all the suggestions on the net....then suddenly I realised that on my 1st game session I could always play for about an hour before the dreaded freeze(graphical glitch with music still going in the background), and there-after it would be quicker and quicker to hit the same prob... notify.gif

I had my suspicions and looked around and found that GTA4 runs most mid-range graphics cards pretty damn hot! (the PS3's and Xbox's suffered from overheating too). I suspected overheating...it makes sense if you think about it(graphics shut down but music carries on?!)

I downloaded RivaTuner here -> http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner

Then I just increased my XFX 8800GT's fan speed up from 30% to about 65%, and I opened the side of my PC casing just for good measure.

Have been playing for 2 hrs now without any interruptions....first time that I have actually been able to shutdown the game normally when I was done!! Yay! sigh.gif

Thought I should post it here.

Trust me guys...I know your frustration...this game has been an UTTER nightmare. I really hope this works for you guys too. Let me know. smile.gificon14.gif

The thing is, my problem is slightly different because I'm not getting slow-down before the crash. No choppy graphics or low-frame rates. It's working perfectly one moment and then BAM.

Heat..

(remember that i'm french, sorry for my bad english)

protospleen,

personnaly this is not my exact problem. Overclocking my graphic card is unbelievable. I will not risk to burn my radeon mad.gif and it will not resolve my problem.

the grame crashes even if the configuration is lower that the recommanded one (automatically).

They have to resolve the probleme themselfs, i bought this game and i can't play !

I explained the problem in a mail i've send to take2 10 days ago, with many screenshots, and nothing... for the moment.

i'm waiting for a second patch or ... devil.gif

but thanks for the idea protospleen but it too dangerous.

Benchmark is good, then i am sure my graphic card is not bad :

I've tried increasing my video card's fan speed as well and while GTA is loaded, my temperature is only 55 degrees Celsius during game but I'm still suffering from the same problem, I'm just curious as to the temperature of your card?

i had the same problem, i tried a lot of things and none of them worked.

i have 2gb ddr3 memory. the last thing i tried was removing one memory dimm, and now the the game works, not as i'd like but it doesn't freeze anymore. i have a lot of games, and i don't have any problems playing them with the 2 memory dimms installed, gta iv is the only one causing problems.

I did the same thing a yesterday, and I managed to play more 5 minutes... LOL

now is back to the same thing, no more than 5 minutes

but I played and finished on a

P4 3.0ghz

1.5gb ram

XFX 280 GTX 1GB(I didn't change to the new system)

Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum(also not changed to the new system)

XP 32bits SP3

frameworks 3.5

I changed to a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550

and a motherboard Asus Striker II NSE and 4GB ram ocz

I installed the same OS and all the other things, perhaps I missed the instalation of something... I just don't know.. this is so annoying.. coz now I have 51.25fps and the game freezes with the sound looping face the other system with 12fps mercie_blink.gif

can you tell your spec and also a benchmark please

sp3, frameworks, cpu, ram, audio card, etc

Cheers

Does it lock up on you while listening to Independence FM by any chance? It was doing that for me and I noticed that the drive my MP3s were on had some corruption, reripped my music another drive and the problem hasn't reappeared.

I've got the same problem i get about 5-8min play, thought it was ram but now i'm thinking its the game! the game runs sort of smooth then a little shudder an complete halt!, but not always the sound loop, even forcing 100% X-fi crystalizer won't freeze the sound

My 4gb ddr2 1066 5-5-5-15 ram should be here tomorow, probably wont make much diffrence!!

Core 2 duo X6800 2.93 huge thermaltake cooler, @3.33 the dif was like 10%, i'm thinking of getting a core 2 QX6800

evga nf680i mobo oc fan cooled

1gb 1066mhz 4-4-4-15 oc

xfx 8800gtx dual fan cooled

Its not heat, my pc has 6 extra fans sigh.gif

I used to have the same problem where it froze at random times and I had to hard reset my PC.

I fixed it by updating my graphics card bios (i have a Sapphire 4870).

Anyone who hasn't flashed the newest bios version of their graphics card should do so!

I have the same problem. The patch didn't do much for me, the game still freezes after a few minutes of gameplay. If I'm lucky, I can play it for maybe 25 minutes. Then, BAM, freeze. Really frustrating. BTW, my system is brand new and absolutely free of viruses, trojans etc. It has all the latest drivers. I'm not going to install beta drivers or anything like that; I'm using my pc for my work as well and I don't want to mess up my system.

Are you using any kind of overclock ? In Nvidia Control Panel, is the "Let the 3d application decide" box checked ?

ObsessedWithGTA4

Try the 8.12 drivers and setting the game to Medium/Medium and leave 100mb extra video ram.

i have tried everything software wise, also have over 100 mb free of video memory, will however lower the settings from highest to medium or high and post feedback about it

alright, i now have been playing for two hours straight no crash to desktop, no freezes to hard reset, i tried a few tweaks so i'm not yet sure what fixed it, so here it goes:

. lowered render quality to "very high"

. i actually found out that the voltage on my ram sticks was to 1.9 when it should be 1.8 so i set it right

. used -availablevidmem 2.0 on the shortcut target

I will later try to play with render quality in "highest" and check if i can eliminate that first one from the fix list.

PS: this may be paranoid level, but i always exit msn and firefox when starting to play the game, my old computer used to reset randomly due to media player's messenger plugin.

been playing for hours now and no crash or freeze to hard reset. rendering changed to highest and no worries, game still rolls which leaves me with 2 solutons for this problem:

. either place -availablevidmem 2.0

. if you overclock check if your memory voltage is apropriate

i believe the first option to be what it solved as i also believe it to be a problem related with the graphics card memory leaking (sapphire 4850 in my case)

This thread is f*cked up, its impossible to troubleshoot a problem when you have 30 people reporting totally diferent problems caused by diferent things.

I've encountered 1 total system freeze once and i believe it was caused by a sound problem, basically niko was trying to tune the radio and it wasnt playing right.

I also noticed that the GPS sound option was working at the time, and it normally doesnt, thats when my system froze. If you experience freezing and believe it is sound related try to disable that GPS feature, there might be a problem with it.

but we're not talking about diferent things here, the crashing to desktop with no error and total system freezes image /sound like in the video i posted seemed to occur to many people, also that many people have in comon ATI cards, the 4870 solved it by updating the gpu bios, us 4850's must use -availablevidmem 2.0

The problems i were experiencing were mathmatical, and are now solved, i will not by any chance try to cause the system to crash by removing any of the tweaks just to prove my point.

same here. Started after I upgraded GeForce drivers to 181.20. Also posted in the Troubleshooting section.

waht is your "same" ? crash to desktop with no error? (program has stopped working) or sound+image freeze (only way is to hard reboot)

maybe both? i had both

I've just got the game, and have spent the last 15 hours trying to play it,it just freezes the entire computer!! I've checked all drivers are up to date, cleaned & defragmented my drives, installed the latest Nvidia driver and begged it to work but the farthest I've got is to niniko's cousins taxi depot 2 mins into the game before it froze.I've now uninstalled it and I'm goin to try again!!

This has to be the most bugged game in history, not happy sad.gif

I'm just quoting myself from another thread here but I havd the problem with a system lock up frequently with sound loop, etc and no prior system slowdown. I still experience it from time to time but I also got an 8 hour session out of the gam since doing the following:

"Make sure there is only one instance of the C++ refdist x64 in add/remove programs, if there are two, uninstall the older one.

If you have FFDshow codec, add gtaIV to exceptions.(FFDShow Audio Decoder is the program name)

If using independence FM, make sure that your MP3s aren't sitting on bad clusters.

Same goes for msdia80.dll which is a part of the C++ redist and seems to end up in the route directory of random drives."

Worth a shot anyway...
