This thing about the Yes, Minister series is that Sir Humphrey is actually an unelected civil servant who is supposed to assist the minister, but in reality it's Humphrey who runs things, at least in part because the minister is too incompetent to do his job himself. Humphrey knows exactly how things work in government, but he and his colleagues are actually more interested in steering policy in a way that benefits the bureaucracy rather than what's best for the country.

This one is so funny. biggrin.gif I actually watched Casino a couple of nights ago and it's great how the two muppets look very much like the characters from the movie (played by Joe Pesci and Robert de Niro). Very nice. smile.gif

I can't believe I missed this aspect of the movie. Must watch the movie again and pay more attention.

Thanks, I appreciate the reply. Yeah, that Goodfellas parody had me falling out of my chair. lol.gif

Sir Humphrey is interesting. I know more about my political system than yours but from what I can tell he is acting the politician in a funny way. Could you clarify this in the terms it was supposed to say to the knowledgeable viewer? For example, was there a person like Sir Humphrey that they are satirizing? More information might make it funnier to me, you know what I mean?

@860 - That Halloween costume is unreal. I saw it on the news and couldn't believe it. It seems like it would be hard to be that flexible. I bet that costs a big buck, or Euro for you other folks.

@pcguytech_2005 - I can't say I really care for Robin Williams in that skit. He's had better moments but is catering to his audience. I won't comment on Mr. Bean except this - that is dry humor for the unbelievers/non-Christians. confused.gif So I guess I care for neither in that context.

Ted Nugent ROCKS!!! tounge.gif FUKIN AWESOME. LOL Love his laugh.

I don't think that there was any one person on whom the Sir Humphrey character was based, but rather he is the sum of various characteristics that can be found in supposedly non-political members in a bureaucracy. I don't know to what extent you have such bureacracies in the U.S., but in Europe it's quite common that certain persons can yield quite a lot of power from a non-elected and non-appointed position within a bureacracy. This is what the Sir Humphrey character is all about. Although formally he is supposed to be neither political nor yield any actual power, in reality he is, through his knowledge of how things work and his colleagues within the bureacracy, able to have more influence on decisions and policy than the minister he is supposed to serve.

While the Sir Humphrey character is working hard to advance the interests of the bureacracy (maintaining the status quo), the minister is trying to promote what's best of the country (as defined by what is best for his political party and his own political career). Those objectives often clash and that's the basis for much of the humour in the series.

You may want to take a look at these articles from Wikipedia. They are quite interesting and may give you some insight into the character and the series as a whole.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yes_Minister

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humphrey_Appleby

Maybe the best way to learn about the character and the series though, is to watch a few episodes. I know there are a few uploaded to YouTube.

Here is one such epispode, in three parts:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Fair enough, it's still funny though. I consider myself a believer, but I still need something to laugh about. I'm pretty sure Jesus while up in heaven saw Richard Pryor and said "OH! Myself, that sh*t is funny" Anyways enough of that. devil.gif

We, definitely, definitely need a show like this in the US. The sad part is people would probably just watch American Idol instead..... confused.gif ...But yeah, Bureaucracies allow for a lot of misuse of power.

I watched the episode you linked and it was classic stuff. It is really hard to keep up with Sir Humphrey! I can't decide if I hate him or like him. Very witty, but very devious. Many laughs.

"Well, I wouldn't call them delay tactics. That would be to mistake lethargy for strategy."

"Bernard, are you trying to be impertinent?" "Oh, no. I'm sure I would succeed if I tried."

"I'm appalled. What do you think of that?" "I'm appalled." "So am I. Appalled!" *brief silence* "It's appalling!" "Appalling, I just don't know how to describe it." "Appalling?" lol.gif

"I see, so the Gov't is going to measure it's successes in column inches now?" "Yes, ...no. *eyebrow* YES AND NO!"

(That quote is only funny if you saw the beginning of the episode. By the way, what the hell are "column inches"???)

"We should never let Ministers get so deeply involved. If we start letting them take the draft the next thing you know they'll be dictating policy!" ... "If we're not here to hold their hands who knows what they might not get up to. *quiet laugh* "

"This could be the PM's master stroke! In one fell swoop, approbation, elevation, and castration! You know the PM's motto: 'In defeat -malice. In victory - revenge!" ..."Abolish my department huh-huh, simply can't be done." "Well I'm sure you know best Humphrey. Oh by the way, there's a job center on [unintelligible] Road!"

Upon his death, the following appeared on the Editorial page of The Ottawa Citizen under the heading 'No,minister'. "It is sadly that we report on Sir Nigel Hawthorne, elsewhere referred to as Sir Humphrey Appleby. While it would be premature to commit ourselves to a definitive position on his merits or even his existence, a committee is being struck to consider the possibility of a decision, in the fullness of time, to regret his passing, if any."

lol.gif

ONE OF THESE IS FUNNY - THE OTHER IS NOT. WEIRD sh*t.

By "column inches" they meant the amount of text that's printed in news papers, as news paper text is written in columns.

This may be a dumb question, but did you learn that in school? I've never heard the term until I saw that video. In fact I had to pause and rewind many parts of the show to have most of it sink in. Anyway, here's a cookie.gif

Anyone into film noir classics?

This movie is cut into 10 parts on Youtube. I recommend it. smile.gif

I don't think that I learned that term in school, no. I've read a daily newspaper since my early teens, so that's probably where I picked it up. The term that I learned that way though is the corresponding Swedish term, "spaltmeter", which litererally translates into "column meter" in English, so once I encountered the English language counterpart ("column inch"), it was pretty easy to figure out what it meant.

About having to pause and rewind certain parts of the show, I think that's actually one of the best things about it. It's one of those rare shows where you have to really pay attention to get the most out of it. Especially the "big speeches" by Humphrey are often of the kind that you'll want to rewind and listen closely to get what he's actually saying.

Very true, and let me say thank you again for introducing me to Sir Humphrey. I don't think I know anyone would watch it but it is cool stuff. Maybe I can share it with somebody some day. icon14.gif

You know that's from a real Mockumentary? It's about what would have happened if the South had won the Civil War. Pretty interesting and pretty damn funny too.

I did, I'm pretty sure, I took VoTech course where creating ad copy was part of it, and as well, in School, in the 70s and 80s, many print mediums were used, in every regard, no computers taking over the known world, even then!

Oh, and the past month I'd grown my beard out while I was working, some of you even remember me with my scraggly beard (nice white hair showing up, UGH!) Anyway, I opted to shoot more singing videos, since I was enjoying more YT music for the Rate the vid above you in the Music section, I decided to film me singing to the video playing in the background. I got about three of those forthcoming, they will be online, so don't say you HAVEN'T BEEN WARNED!!!!!

Enjoy, BTW, they are rather amusing as I don my mirrored sun glasses as well! haha

ATTENTION: Don't watch these videos if you don't have some resistance to scary videos. These videos don't scare me, but some people might have some fear.

The guy who created these videos created a total of 9 videos, but these three are the best in my opinion.
