catzilla
I don't really play games. I play half life and gta in spare time. That's about it. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't even use windows at all, but unfortunately, wine has a poor implementation of WIN32API as of now.
akjs123
I would suggest you wait a couple of days till the patch comes out, see how it affects others game performance with similar hardware to what you're planning to buy. That way you can decide better if its worth the cost.
weedking
If money isn't an issue, go Intel. If you want to save a few bucks go with the AMD. From what I was reading the performance difference isn't that major but yeah, the Q6600 is the better chip. I ordered a X4 9750 only because I'm strapped for cash and I need a cheap quad core. rundll32
dunno about you but personally, if I was thinking of upgrading at this point, I'd be looking at the i7 chips as you'll give yourself more options to upgrade in the future. However, they cost quite alot at the mo, quick look at google says £1199 for the whole system, so I'm not sure how much that would be in your money. But you would save more in the long run.You could build it yourself and save abit, I built my first 3 months ago, if I can do it anyone can. Good place to start if your interested is buildyourown.org.uk. If the price of 1199 is in Euros, then it will be about the same as my first set up of 1349,00 dollars. But I don't think I will build it myself, too lazy Now the i7 alternative is tempting though Edit: typing fail, again

chillum
I think I will spend my money on this system, it will cost me approximately 1349,00 dollars (I chose the hardware, they build it for me) Antec Nine Hundred Black Miditower Corsair Powersupply 550W Bulk, black, Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4, AMD 790X, DDR2, AMD Phenom 9850 Black Edition Quad-Core 2.5 GHz Boxed, 4MB Cache, Socket AM2+, 125w, Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2048MB CL5 (can double the memory for a small amount of money if necessary?) Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 1GB GDDR3, PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI/HDMI/HDCP, Lite-R Western Digital Caviar GP 500GB SATA2, Creative SB X-Fi XtremeGamer, Sony NEC Optiarc DVD±RW burner AD-5200A, Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit If anyone see any stupid about this setup please let me know, as I am not the best computerbuilder around at least 4 gig RAM are crucial nowadays. But get CL4 ram. CL5 is outdated. If you want a gaming rig, forget the i7. Its just sh*tty for gamers, if you render alot or do other cpu intensive tasks (aside from gaming) then you need an i7 for the future. And think about forgetting the X-fi extreme Gamer and getting a 4870 instead. should give you 20% more gaming power, and if you want to be future proof get the 1gb version. 550W are more than enough, you could run a x2 with it. Spinpoint F1 as a hard drive would be an alternative, too. just my 2 cents.
bluebird2008
took me about 2 hours to physically build and I have to say I did quite enjoy it, also feel better at not being ripped off by PC world and Curry's etc for a junk machine that have dated components. If you dont want to/cant be bothered to,thats fair enough, I spent far more hours reading up on it than building. But I stand by that, even if you get one thats pre-built, I'd go all out and get the i7. You'll save alot more in the long run.

disposeablehero
Go and buy a CORE i7 DUDE!!! It's Amazing bro!!!! Disagree, benchmarks show little to zero performance increase in games. Also, games are more GPU bound then CPU bound, Dual Cores are not even bottlenecks yet, by the time Core i7 is needed for games the current crop will have been upgraded twice. For the price Core I7 is a complete and utter waste for a gamer.

bluebird2008
I no what your saying about about the i7 is not good value for performance yet, but if you get it now you aint gonna have to worry about upgrading the mobo and DDR3 Ram. If you get a Quad now, you're gonna have to upgrade everything in about 2 years, as that chipset has run its course.

The money you would save now not going to Icore 7 would make it easy to go icore 7 in 2 years. A icore 7 now will cost over $1000 (Motherboards alone are close to $400). Plus, in 2 years time the Icore 7's on the market now will be replaced. It is a big watse of money getting a core I 7 right now.

Every Q9770 rocks over the heaviest i7 in gaming aspects. Search for benchmarks by yourself if you don't believe me. If you render with 3dMax and want to game in the meanwhile, the i7 MIGHT be right for you. The i7 is just NOT a gaming plattform. You could've spend the extra $$$ in a X2 or a crossfire with the two 4870's , maybe water cooling to get the q9770 @ 4 ghz And i don't believe that the i7 is only stressed with 23% in your benchmark, try to get it to 100% should be easy, but i suppose you can't because you can't use 100% of its poewer due to HT limits in games. And if you spend some thousand $$$ in a "gaming" rig, try not to use warez like "Rockers International Team® Windows Vista Eternity" 2009 x64 " you save at the wrong end, and its not really clever showing everyone you use a pirated os, i know its not fair, but they (R*) don't have to give you proper support Again: The i7 is not a bad processor, if i had a alot of money i probably would get me one, but i work more with my pc than i game, so the working power would outweigh the not superior performance in gaming, which is not that bad at all, but nothing compared to a q9770 Edited December 9, 2008 by chillum
