ericj86
what does everyone mean they gained fps, how can you tell how much you have before?
streetlifeg
It's not a fucking virus. It just packs or defragments files in your gta folder. Although it did jack all for my FPS, benchmark shows only 4fps improvement after three runs... Used to be 31, now it's at constant 35. Could barely spot the difference by eye. Guess that's better than nothing though.
mastertitsoyo
so do you run it everytime before you play or what?

roypaci
I've been running this defrag-thing about 20 mins.. how long does it take? You should have a lot of fragmented files... On my laptop it takes one and half minutes max to finish. Use Auslogics Defrag.tool before you run the Contig.exe.

Wethospu
Please, don't sticky this topic. Instead, there should be a topic which explains simple ways to make GTA IV run smoother (such as defragmenting, driver updates). Note: I doubt I'm that tech-person that I could write a topic like that. Problem with this topics first post is that it explains the solution but not the problem. This means people with another problem may try it and simply waste their time (for example it took me a while to notice that this wouldn't benefit me at all). Luckily the problem is explained in this topic but in stickies, all of it should be in the first post.
FenixDelta753
I've checked the file now and its a keylogger. Not the one from Microsoft, that's guaranteed to be clean unless MS wants to screw us all over.
craig3000
its called smart defrag by Iobit much better now you can defrag your whole computer better than XP or vista can and you can optimize data placement oooooooooo seriously though if your gonna defrag do it properly and speed up your whole pc not just GTA 4 http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html
jonbrown
Steam Version? Does work better than defragging via the steam application?
The_Cheese_Man
I noticed if you defrag after you install the patch, you will also get less stuttering. At least in my experience.
jonbrown
For what it's worth, when I first applied patch 2, my Steam GTA 4 would not even load! I did a verify integrity of cache under Steam (which includes defragmentation) and BINGO it loaded fine... But soon found that I had subsequent problems with crashing in-game. I'm 99% sure it's fixed, though - played about 7 hours over 2 days stable. I turned off vsync in game (a new patch 2 feature) and then forced it off in nvidia control panel. I've just been using windows defrag. I installed Smart Defrag and my GTA 4 statistics concerning available video memory have changed, allowing me to increase my view distance 4 points while still staying in the yellow range. Is this a fluke? I've shut down and re launched GTA 4 and still get the same boost.

CarlCJ55
http://www.speedyshare.com/329153984.html Download that contig.exe file and place it in your GTA IV directory. Then create a shortcut desktop and have a commandline at the end( -s) and it should look like this: "X:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\Contig.exe" -s Then run it and wait till it close's because that means it's finished it can take anywhere from 5 to 20minutes to complete depending on your system. I gained 5 fps outside and 10fps inside after this tweak. I try it but it doesn't working!
mcal9909
It really works? No virus? yes it works, its a defrag tool. i wouldnt trust any of the ldodgey links ive seen in this thread tho, best to get it directly from the source http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb897428.aspx if you dont trust that then just google CONTIG you will find it on a microsoft site. It does a much better job of defragmenting files than the standard windows defrag, there is also instructions on that site.
swe_seifer
Oh and dont forget after Contig run this... It defrags the pagefile and registry hive on single or upon every boot (this is not done with regular defrag progs) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb897426.aspx Instructions on site

Lil'Q
Ok, I just tried this thing and you know what ? I think it really helped me. I only have one question, whats the difference with VSync enabled or disabled, I only see that if you enable it, it sets a limit of FPS to 60... Sorry if this is OFFtopic but can someone explain me this... ?
