nonoNO.

yeah place Contig.exe in your GTA IV folder. THEN

create a shortcut of contig.exe to your desktop and have a commandline at the end( -s) and it should look like this:

"X:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\Contig.exe" -s

How To:

When created the shortcut to the desktop, Right press the shortcut, and there it should look like this:

"X:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\Contig.exe" -s

Then run the shortcut (vista users, run the shortcut by right clicking it and press ''run as administrator''

I've checked the file now and its a keylogger.

seriously?

no, he is fos

http://virusscan.jotti.org/

found nothing.

cheers maan !! you tried this?

Yes sir, if you scroll up a lil bit , you will see a huge post.

That is me showing the results of the virus scan.

I of course instead of placing the file in the gta folder.

I plopped it right down in drive C and set it to work from there on the whole drive.

when it is done I will move it to the rockstar folder and begin again

then again in the gtaiv specific folder.

I have tiny vista (a very stripped down version of vista) and it has no

defrag proggy in it. along with many other useless items (till ya need em)

Bill gates himself said "tiny is fine, it has so little in it, it's a worthless peice of junk anyway"

ok the quote is not perfectly exactly as he said, but it's in the ballpark.. so tiny vista is legal

and most people find it useless . It's like Microsoft's open source o/s on the hush hush.

open source?

it's just someone random on the Internet who took the vista installation disk and used whatever program (forgotten which) and took all the stuff off the installation disk,

i personally would just do the same and remove stuff you know you don't need rather than using someone elses and having to put up with not having somethign you use all the time.

//edit its called vlite the XP version is called nlite.

PROBLEM !

ok, so i downloaded the file, popped it straight into my gtaiv folder,

created a shortcut

(looks like this)

"C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv\GTAIV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -s

and there is no difference !

double clicked the shortcut and it gta ran straight away, (non of that 5-20minutes talk) for somecomputers???

what went wrong, do I need to download another tool not specified here that enables my computer to succesfully use the ( -s) rule??

cheers !

no.

Take the shortcut you created. put it directly on your desktop

right click, select "options"

in the line where it tells what file is to be executed hit space once at the end of the line then type -s then apply and ok

then go to the shortcut and double click.

cmd prompt should open and begin a scan and restructure of that directory.

if you are on Vista you might have to re-boot to administrator mode to make it work.

you have to link to the defrag file not your gta launcher and then it will the continue to defragment the files within your gta folder.

for some reason on every installation i've done of gta 4 (bordering about about 25) every single time ALL the files have been fragmented in the gta folder, i don't know if this is something to do with the way it installs but i don't think it's normal that a new install is fragmented so much.

So does this actually do anything if you have no fragments on your drive? I don't see how this would help unless you haven't defraged your HD, In which case you should just defrag your harddrive because it will make everything run better not just GTA.

this is true, but as i have said the GTA folder at least on my pc is fragmented from a fresh installation, not been run and is on its own drive with no other files on the drive, so its obviously happening upon installation (at least for me) so unelss you have defragged your entire HDD since installation it might be an idea to do it.

YOU DO NOT LINK TO THE LAUNCHGTA.EXE FILE YOU LINK TO THE CONTIG.EXE (THE DEFRAG FILE YOU JUST DONWLOADED) WHICH SHOULD BE PLACED IN YOUR GTA FOLDER

I've checked the file now and its a keylogger.

i didn't find anything bad in the exe.

i run a scheduled defrag(weekly) so it only defraged 5 files.

Summary:

Number of files processed : 5326

Number of files defragmented: 5

Average fragmentation before: 1.00094 frags/file

Average fragmentation after : 1 frags/file

defragging a drive never hurts. treat your selfs to scheduled defrags - you'll be a happier person. the one mentioned in this post is nice to use if you 'cant wait' for those long ass complete defrags and want to defrag NOW!!

I hope everyone enjoyed this past year, and I hope the upcoming year will be a good one for everyone.

the game won't run after all it is doing is taking the fragmented files and reordering them on your hardrive, nothing will change in your game

all is it doing is taking files that on your hardrive platter are like this

<File1 part1> <file2> <File1 part2>

You see how its fragmented? "split" and placed in two different places on the hardrive this means the hdd has to find the first bit then search for the second bit slowing down the access time which can cause stuttering in games etc

afterwards it should be like this

<File1> <file2> so it only has to look in one place to find the corresponding file.

I am amazed at how many people do not know how to defrag....

I use PerfectDisk. It beats the snot out of pretty much any other defragger. I have set up to defrag, when my pc is idle.

Yup I defrag wit the stock windows defragger and my drive is 100% defragged even if it just was your gta4 that was fragmented it would only take a few minutes to defrag it. ITs not like you would have to defrag everything even know there not fragmented.

defrag
