How to By-Pass GTA IV Memory Restriction

Question

Spider-Vice

Thought I'd make a topic about this because the way Rockstar stops people from frying their GPU's is by limiting the graphics settings based on your graphics card's memory. Now this may sound like a good idea, however it only takes into account dedicated video RAM the graphics card has.

For example, at the time of writing I have a nVidia GeForce 8800GTS with 320MB of RAM. This card can also make used of shared RAM (memory taken from your system's RAM, of which I currently have a total of 4GB). I'm not sure how much it is possible to use, but DxDiag reports me as having 2GB of graphics memory, pretty awesome, that means it's taken 1.7GB from my system RAM, meaning I've got 2.3GB left, plenty to play GTA IV.

So, naturally I want to play on as higher settings as possible for my computer. But because the game only recognises 320MB of that video RAM, I'm severely limited. Here's what to do to get around those limits:

Retail version instructions

1. Create a shortcut on your desktop to the LaunchGTAIV.exe - by default this will be in C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV

2. Right click the shortcut and click Properties

3. Make sure the Shortcut tab is selected. You should see a field called "Target", edit this to say the following, making sure the path is correct, I'm just using the default here:

QUOTE

"C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -norestrictions -nomemrestrict

That includes the quote marks and the options coming after the link to the path

4. Click Apply

5. Double click the shortcut to launch the game.

Steam version instructions

1. In steam, right click the game right click the game in Steam and go to Properties > Launch Options

2. Add the command: -norestrictions -nomemrestrict

3. Launch the game

Screenshot

To prove it works, here's what I ended up with.

http://www.imagelodge.net/imgs/chris/gtaiv...restrictpgi.jpg

What happens if I'm a dumbass and turn up all the settings too high?

Like I showed in the above screenshot? Well, this is what happened to me. There's simply not enough memory available to load up all the textures. Upon leaving the safehouse I was greeted by the following:

http://www.imagelodge.net/imgs/chris/gtaiv-pc-toohighlfy.jpg

However, the player models looked amazing! tongue.gif

NOTE: Remember to be sensible with the settings. If you've got a sh*tty card then there's really no point turning everything up high, it'll be way too laggy to play. Play around with the settings until you reach a compromise between nice quality, and good framerate.

Just read your post so checked dxdiag and its saying I have 1777Mb available for video memory, but i only have an 256mb 8600GT with 4gb of ram...

lets me override the settings but then it wont run the game at all... shows the screens with the characters on etc then just goes blank instead of starting up...

Do you have the latest DirectX version?

Did you overclock your card?

Sadly enough after the latest update to the game this method will no longer work.

Just thought I'd point out that by doing this, you will most likely end up with pop ins and flashing textures because this method means you're using RAM which is slower than VRAM, which means the system is slower to swap textures around and this will cause problems.

Use at your own risk.

Weirdo.
Sadly enough after the latest update to the game this method will no longer work.

That's because you now need to make a text file in your GTA IV directory named, "commandline". Add the commands like so:

-norestrictions

-nomemrestrict

Except with a space before the command. Seriously, I'm surprised you didn't know this already.

You should use availablevidmem, it's a lot more stable and allows you to fine tune the amount of RAM you're going to abuse.

that depends on your ram though.

But it varies depending on your specs of PC. On my end, using availablemem stutters my game.

On my end, using availablemem stutters my game.

Whereas nomemrestrict doesn't?

put this in a notepad .txt with commandline as title in the game's main folder) and hope that it works
-norestrictions
-availablevidmem 4096 " the amount of ram that u dedicate GPU had"
-percentvidmem 100%
-minspecaudio
-nomemrestrict

and make sure that LaunchGTAIV.exe selected to run using ur dedicate GPU
good luck

Right, usually everything is narrowing down to find good settings balance...
