Flickering,and black "stripy" shadows/shaders

Im getting these realy weird grainy and flickering shadows and general black stuff. I have a core 2 Duo E7300 2.66ghz..2GB of ram and an ATI 3600 series card...its giving me 20 fps on low(besides rez)..which stinks..but the shadows are ESPECIALLY horrible. They move with your camera...and distant houses, cars and other stuff are HORRIBLY flickery and black. I havent overclocked and this is the first time this has happend(tho i had a similat problem with mercs 2 on an older pc) ..any help would be appreciated. It looks better on the SS that in actulay is but still..SS ahead:

Replace the * with i. Also..i copied this from general talk..and have since found out that the "grain" is normal...however when driving around all of the houses stillhhave these stripes on em that move around like conveierlines..and cars just have black blocks and sharp arrows as shadows.

Exactly the thing!

So far only HD26xx, HD36xx issue... either everyone else has their hands full with other crap, or the problem is native only to this series of Video Cards. sly.gif

why dont u use the forum IMG tag to popst pics instead of f*cking imageshack, its the worst site to use tbh! putfile, photobucket are way faster!

Actually, this isn't limited to lower end cards. I'm running E6750 @3.2ghz, 8GB RAM, 2x HD4870 gfx cards and vista x64.

I get the same issue with shadows (they look PS2-esque and nausea-inducing) and also the missing texture bug. I'll be installing the new ATI driver when it comes out. That should fix the texture issue.

Still, at least the -norestrictions tag earned me another 8fps on the high texture/highest render settings, which is surprising cos I got less than 30fps originally...and when you travel really fast, you don't actually notice the shadows...

I fixed this issue somehow, by just repeatedly messing with settings. I made a commandline.txt with "-nomemrestrict -windowed -novblank -framelimit -texturequality=2 -renderquality=4 -detailquality=70 -shadowdensity=16 -viewdistance=30 -width=1600 -height=900" in it. I haven't yet narrowed down which command fixed it. These bugs seem to be very random, so it may not work for you.

Unfortunately this bug was the least of my problems, because I am still missing textures. At least I've gotten it from a "huge pile of crap" to a "big pile of crap"..

Don't get your hopes up. I've tried running the 8.12beta driver and it made no difference on this problem or the missing textures. Maybe the final version of the drivers will be different though.

Heh, that's where I am too. With many, many hours of fiddling, updating this, adding switches to that, I now have a game that runs poorly and has texture corruption on every shadow.

<taps foot>

Now where's the non-beta new Nvidia drivers and a patch? smile.gif

I cleaned out my 8.11 drivers and installed the 8.12 beta driver last night.

Yay! No more missing textures (well, no where near as many).

The FPS seems to have stabilised at 35FPS too.

Quite happy at the moment, will be happier with the new patch im sure.

I went to 3dguru.com and downloaded their DriverSweeper proggy.

Uninstall ur drivers normally (add/remove)

Then reboot into safe mode.

Run DriverSweeper and clear out any gfx drivers that may be left over.

Reboot

Install ATI 8.12 beta drivers (google for a link)

Enjoy.

I Had the flickering lights problem to which Rockstar suggested me to

1. Turn Shadow Density down to zero

2.Turn off crossfire (ATI)

Well i turned down shadow density to zero but that did not work, However turning off crossfire did.... icon14.gif

So maybe that is something ATI users can try till they get a fix..

You can turn off crossfire by opening up ATI CCC under 3D click on Catalyst AI and then check disable catalyst AI. This did the trick for me...

My System

Q9550 @ 4Ghz

8GB DDR2 942Mhz OC'ed

HD4870 X2 ---- Maybe the catalyst AI thingy is for this X2 card only... I am not sure?

Vista Ultimate 64Bit

Even with this spec I am not able to run the game even close to being maxed out???????

All the best guys ......

I have this z-fighting problem too. I think it has something to do with lighting because it's not as prevalent at night. Was using 8.11, tried switching to 8.12BETA, tried changing mipmap level, tried disabling CATALYST AI, tried changing graphic settings ingame - all in vain. My system is:

Athlon 64 X2 2.8 5600+

2GB RAM DDR667

Gigabyte nforce 570-sli chipset motherboard

Club3d RADEON HD2600XT

WinVista 32

Been there, tried that ... biggrin.gif And my thoughts exactly... after playing to 44% of the game (woohoo rolleyes.gif ) the pattern is getting more clear. First it's the lighting yes, BUT after spending a lot of time playing i thought of this - when objects are at a certain view distance, say Dmax, the engine takes the section of the world and then substitutes the detailed representation with a mid-plane polygon representing the block (which is pretty 3D Engines 101), hoping it's too far from the viewer to make the difference. Well this is all fun... but somehow the engine gets it all wrong, and sometimes both the detailed and the crude polygons are shown... thus making Z-fighting occure. I rembemer reading in a bulletin somewhere (don't know if it was an official one) about wrong distance values being calculated by the card, and with wrong distances... sarcasm.gif All this is supported by another "phenomenon", or rather artifact... sometimes an opening (door, tunel, etc) will stay "capped" with a polygon although i'm pretty close to it dozingoff.gif

I've given up on all this now... just going to play the rest of the game... and pretend it's OK biggrin.gif

Much relaxed, and my nerves deserve the rest.

When there's an update... i'll be there inlove.gif

Add ATI 8.12final drivers to the list of things that couldn't solve this problem!

P.S. Would Mr. Rockstar Toronto kindly acknowledge the existense of this problem?

Same grainy shadows here w/ hd2600pro. I also have those on the cars, indoors etc. not only on buildings. The only way to get rid of them is to press P for that blur effect which doesn't look good at all. You'll still have the same problem but it somehow masks those so you won't see it. Same effect is used better during the cutscenes, it doesn't look too blurry.

Hey, guess what the patch did to solve our problem?

NOTHING!!! That's right. No improvement whatsoever.

I can't f*cking believe it. This PC port is a total trainwreck! My patience is running out.

Hey, if I revoke my activation and sell the game, will the next user be able to sign in to GFWlive with this cd-key?

Yes, I'm seriously considering it.

P.S. I repeat: WOULD MR. ROCKSTAR TORONTO KINDLY ACKNOLEDGE OUR ISSUE?
