Guys it is not rockstars problem....

Your problem is with windows live

If you got a compatible router, in supported country and your Nat is still strict it’s not setup right... firmware, upnp, port forwarding, other software blocking it....

troubleshoot your connection by bypassing the router or turning all your security off 1 by 1....

Until it says Nat Open... it's a problem on your end....

and if you have not got out your router manual or tried contacting your router manufacture..... or gone to they site see if anyone else has same problems

Yes, it's a Windows Live problem, but Rockstar ought to give supports since it was their decision to include Windows Live in their product. My router is not listed as compatible, but it isn't listed as incompatible either.

Firmware is up to date, UPnP is not enabled, port forwarding is correctly done (both ports 88 and 3074) and there is no software blocking GTA (Yes, I even tried turning off Windows Firewall and adding ports 88 and 3074 as Exceptions... didn't work).

Ok... finally I solved it. I downloaded a firmware from a third party and that solved the issue. My firmware version was 3.40(PT.0)b46 and now it is 3.40(PT.0)b46_FC. That gave me an Open NAT.

And yes, I tried to update it before, but it didn't work because I was doing it from Firefox, and I discovered it only works with Internet Explorer. With Firefox it just gets stuck uploading it, so I thought it was because it was no valid firmware or because I already had the latest version.

Ah, I see that someone already pointed out a solution for the problem. Today I was also able to play online for a great amount of time (about 2 hours) with +20 players on a lot of funny GTA races. smile.gif

The problem was in my router. I had to forward some ports for GTA IV and made my computer "visible" on the internet (something about DMZ). When I first checked, on Games for Windows LIVE, my NAT setting was strict, and after all the changes on the router settings, the NAT setting changed to open and I could play happily GTA IV online. I must say: AMAZING! biggrin.gif

So, if you get the "You have been removed from the game" thing, just try to forward the ports 1096 and 3074 on your router (if you don't know how, check this site -> www.portforward.com). If it doesn't work, make your computer "visible" on the Internet, not hidden "behind" the router. It's all about the DMZ setting. For example -> "DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is used to allow a single computer on the LAN to be exposed to the Internet." You enter your IP and you enable this option.

It should work this way. Also, check your Games for Windows LIVE settings when ingame. If the NAT setting is STRICT, then something is wrong. If it is OPEN, you should be able to play without any trouble. Have fun online. smile.gif

PS: Sorry if someone had already post this explanation. If not, I think it would be good to have this sticky or something, because it can help a lot of people. After all, it's not Rockstar fault, though they should have wrote a document or something explaining this. It was very frustrating not being able to play. angry.gif

1. Ok, so who deserves the blame, us customers who bought this game or whoever the guys that made this game, multiplayer as well?

2. By opening nat, or changing router settings, or whatever - doesn't that make your computer less secure or something?

I gotta say I hate not being able to play online...

FriscoD, heres some advice a router is not going to stop someone getting in your computer, only buys more time.... or be walk in a park, just run a firewall.... The chance of a real "hacker", going after your computer is less likely.... if you want safe then you want a computer totally not connected to the internet... no home user really needs a router.. your more likely to get screwed with a virus / worm / trojan.. or people running other progs that try and crash or gain access to your comp...

A good firewall is just as good... & sometimes better

I don't think the network is any of the problem. If you had a network issue it would directly not allow you to connect, it wouldn't use up 100% CPU and lock it up from that.

I have this issue and I use Windows Live regularly, no issues there.

Well, I can only blame Rockstar for not giving support for multiplayer. I mean, I play other games online and I don't need to forward any ports or deal with the DMZ settings. So, how was I suppose to know you needed to do all that stuff to be able to play online GTA IV? dozingoff.gif

They should have wrote a document giving these explanations, it would have saved time and I could be playing online for some time now. Specially after I see the quality of the multiplayer... I just want to play more and more. biggrin.gif

Well, in a way, it does make your computer more vulnerable. BUT... it's unlikely that someone will hack it. Unless you're pretty rich, or a businessman, or something (tounge.gif), you should not fear. You're more likely to get a trojan or spyware than a hacker trying to enter on your machine. Plus, the router it's just a basic protection. If you have a good anti virus, firewall and if you update that stuff regularly, and if you do scans regularly, then there's should be no problem.

I guarantee you, if you don't have software to protect your data, then it's not a router that will save you. I connected once to the internet without any defensive programs, through a router, and it was a damn flow of virus, trojans and other stuff. cool.gif

NAT is open, upnp is on, and the ports are forwarded but I still get this problem. I get a list of about 20 games and sometimes I can join one of them, usually one of the smaller ones. Anything else to try?

I found a couple of the ports were also open for another comp on the network so I went ahead and removed them and appear to be able to join any game I want now. I still get a list of less than 20 games, is that right?

I asked some other poster in other thread where it was about 5 pages of it (I don't know what happened to it now & can't find it), it was "PC Multiplayer problems", something like that. Maybe mods deleted it for no reason or somethin?

Anyway, he was telling people to install http://hotspotshield.com/ and said it would work on multiplayer with no problems, I asked him what was the main purpose of this software, etc. I just can't find that thread where I posted my question anymore. icon13.gif

But if you try this and works, please let me know.

Thanks!

Haha, I switched to a new router and I'm getting this strict NAT crap again, time to spend a load more time trying to fix this problem with new hardware, yay...

Rockstar had to jump into bed with GFWL and force this crappy system of online play on everyone. suicidal.gif

Gimme servers dammit.
