Anti Alaising for Rockstar!

AA= blur.

Better hardware and larger screen = no need for aa

Bullsh*t,

I'm playing @ 1920x1200 on a 24" LCD and see some serious jaggies. AA for this game would make it look 10x better.

Oh, and AA is definitely != blur. Read up - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antialiasing

The "blur" effect this game has makes all the textures look, well, blurry... and it doesn't get rid of the jagged edges well enough to be worth the horrible loss in texture quality.

Better hardware and larger screen == more need for aa.

For the time being I'm well content with the "faux AA" (P key), but I agree... I'd love to have AA on my next rig (no way could I run it with AA right now).

Respectable performance coupled with graphics like GTA san andreas and additional gameplay which gameplay is key! Until us gamers stop focussing on absolute cutting edge graphics this is the kind of crap which shall continue in future, graphics only subtly help a game, performace & gameplay are most important so I would rather see them focus on that than worry about the odd jaggy edge, btw one good way to get the image looking alot crisper is make sure your dtop rez is the same as your GTA rez

Think about whats getting asked for here, your asking for AA when the game currently runs like a game on 10*aa and antistropic without these setting even being on! Lets get the optimisation/memmleaks/performance 10* better first

Im kinda in shock what rockstar has done, there titles were all about brilliantly optimised graphics which through massive immersion and gameplay , still managed to immerse the player 100* more than games like crysis but I can see rockstar going that stupid route. I think we would get an increase in perfomance if Rockstar removed the drm 100% although I realise that is just the tip of the iceberg

At this time I am thinking the previous GTA titles were better games and thats over and above just a performance based opinion, this game needs alot of work, they say the game is for future cards but I just think on high settings the code is "cocked up" so they say that now so they can spend ages working on a patch or just forget it; they also say all this because it is unoptimised and a complete memory hog. Missing textures , heck I would expect this from EA then an indie developer but not from rockstar, very dissapointed Rstar has shat on its tradionally medium range PC audience when true top notch PC owners are in the minority , the fact is great graphics doesnt make a good game anyway, its the last thing I would worry about. Also its not as if the textures are much better than the previous version of the game but people get taken in by the bs

aa would be considered optimization. And, while we're talking about performance, I find it strange that on my Q6600/8800GTS640/2GOCZ I can crank the settings up (with command line addition) to something like 1200/613 in usage parameters and it runs better than the auto settings the game gives. The gameplay is fine, with the exception of some minor issues Ive found. They just did a sh*tty job of compiling this engine. Fix the memory leak with forces me to restart every half hour and add support for aa - some of us like to immerse ourselves in a game world....kind of hard to do when everything looks like the edge of a hacksaw....I built my system to run sh*t at high or maximum and it performs flawlessly on all new releases up until the day this turd landed in my lap.

Yeah liftow, I know I am dissapointed with how the game runs considering it uses kinda standard textures and I can also get it really playable but I do genuinly feel sorry for people like yourself who have put out alot of cash on their rigs , to get hit with this crap(I.e buy another rig, sorry that is BS)

Im just worried if they focus on AA the optimisation will never come, I suppose I dont have a problem with AA if they give performance a massive overhaul

nice post bruv, def needs AA all games should come with the option in my opinion, if u can't handle it don't use it

I love options, thats the point of PC gaming. Give us AA options, Vsync Options, Options for everything so we dont have to dick around with adding commands. The more options the better, and with future hardware it will only make the game better and better.

R* stop to play the fool.

DX9 supports AA, so add it please!! Without it game not only looks awfully, but also the desire to play vanishes.

It doesnt matter how much we want AA, if the style of rendering is incapable of supporting it then it just won't happen. I'm sure you could hack together some form of partial AA but Rockstar isn't going to do something that would potentially lead to even more tech support problems when they are already receiving ample amounts of bad press as result of their lack of optimizations and the many bugs. You should read up on how the engine works; the way shadows are rendered prevents AA.

That is total crap. Anti aliasing is built into DirectX, and can be applied very very easily. What the developers have to think about is the performance implications. When they create the DirectX Device, the device .MultiSampleType and .MultiSampleQuality needs to be set to D3DMULTISAMPLE_N_SAMPLES and the Quality, Where N is the number of samples. So in c++ you would do the following after creating the directx device:

direct3DDevice.MultiSampleType = D3DMULTISAMPLE_4_SAMPLES;

direct3DDevice.MultiSampleQuality = 1;

That is all that needs to be done, Why rockstar havent included a graphic option to set these parameters in game, i have absolubetly no idea. They are oblviously trying to get people to buy a console, when it wont work anyway. Any real pc gamer is not going to buy a £200 console over a beasty £2000 pc.

the probleme is , that call is bypassed by drivers because the way framebuffer is used make imposible to use hardware AA.

But there is still a way to have AA. shaders...

cryani.gif yes this game needs AA badly it looks horid in its current state, but before that being able to see textures on my Geforce 9800gtx would be a nice start also cryani.gif

I'm a programmer but not for windows or games some of you seem knowledgeable so maybe you can answer this question. Is the reason AA is 'impossible' to add now because R* simply did not do the planning for the project. I've seen some reasons why it would be hard now but it just seems like maybe they should have thought of that before they started coding. Its the same as the quad core requirement. If you were porting IV wouldn't the first two things you think of be that gamers generally prefer dual core (because most games can only make use of 2 core, so for the same dollars you can buy more CPU cache, clock speed) and that computer gamers are going to demand good AA. Its a real fail.

There is no real reason for no AA, they have 29 Programmers working at R*, all they need to do is add an anti aliasing post process method to the deferred shader, and et voila. Surely one person could spend a week or two getting it to work. Its been done in Stalker, so they can do it. There is no excuse whatsoever.

i believe its because they were to busy playing around with new shaders and algorithms, and rushed release before xmas, AA has always been there somewhere but on the back plate, hopefully now they realize how much we want and need it.

I also believe that there main concerns are the consols and since on the average tv AA isnt as really required, especially when sat 5-10 feet away from the screen, perhaps didnt seem that important at the time!

My final thought is that considering the diversity of the game they had there work cut out for them, and just didnt have enough time ( before xmas) and maybe enough budget (theres always someone at the top clutching there wallets (and giving deadlines)). what i would like to see know is rockstar telling us what there plans are! what improvments we can expect and when!

this would satisfy me!!

I don't care about jaggies, I got the game working, now I just want a framerate that makes sense on my rig. If it is true that they just used a wrapper, I'm demanding a refund. That is so lazy as to be unforgivable. Hey rather than doing our work, let's just wipe it off on the consumers who'll have to buy larger rigs....that and...ohy eah go get us some more stock in dell and alienware!

I would certainly like to see AA added to the game, but in no way am I anywhere near expecting to see it in a patch.

And to the person who said that this problem is solved by better hardware and a larger screen, you're freaking nuts. I play on a 46" HDTV at 1920 x 1080 resolution, and I can sure as hell see the jaggies. I don't think it's a horrible problem, but it's definitely noticeable and makes me wish I at least had the option to smooth out some edges. And it hurts the immersion factor a bit when everything looks so clear and nice, but then the corners of everything are jagged.

It's not number 1, or 2 on my list even in regards to desired fixes, but it would be nice to see it.

NOBODY SHOULD CARE ABOUT AA RIGHT NOW

Fix the f*cking game first. I can barely play this game at 800x600 and that's not even my native resolution.

YES

With the resolution of more than double what sh*tty consolers have to put up with the jaggies are intolerable on my screen!!!

The game runs so far on my system just great biggrin.gif I am very shocked though that a modern game like this doesnt have AA and find it very dissapointing sad.gif

Hopefully this will be resolved very soon smile.gif

cheers all

To add AA support Rockstar has to either make a DX10 support for the game or remove the future-HDR-whatever-they-call-it from the current game.
