Some potential ideas you may want to try:

 

1) Install DAEMON TOOLS - Chance of working: low-med

This is a virtual dvd application that emulates DVD drives. Create an image of the GTA IV dvd using any suitable application (Alcohol 120% (shareware/30-day trial) and similar). Mount this image in Daemon Tools and play with the emulators. For instance, you could enable (or disable?) the SecuROM emulation, install the game and see if it changes anything.

 

2) Use Sysinteral's FileMon Application - Chance of working: med-high

Google for Sysinternals (this is a part of Microsoft) and grab yourself the application called FileMon (or for vista users the more complicated Process Monitor). I will not go into more speciffic instructions for how to use this application here, as it's rather easy to use (Capture/Clear log is the only things you need to know now, they are both in the toolbar). Start capturing with FileMon (you'll see alot of activity in the log immediately). Start GTA IV and wait for it to crash. Immediately rush to FileMon and turn off capturing. Look for any errors in the log (it should now be among the 1000 or so last lines). If you find a file that looks like it may be the cause of the problem, and it's a suitable size you can rush over to a friend and copy this file hoping it will fix it. If nothing else then we have atleast identified it, and we may be able to do something else about it.

 

NOTE: SecuROM doesn't like either of those solutions and it's possible that you won't be able to launch the game after using either one. If this is the case you need to uninstall Daemon Tools and/or reboot your computer to unload the temporary kernel driver installed by FileMon.

Already tried using a crack, didn't work, i doubt Daemon tools would work,and would anyone be able to verify your last solution?: Filemon.

I emailed Rocstar and got the response from them to re-install the game from the desktop, this actually made it much worse, now instead of getting it when i try the mission "Concrete Jungle" i now get it whenever i try to visit anywhere near Little Jacobs house.

I just wanted to mention that I have come across this error today aswell and I purchased my game through Steam. Take2 support has submitted my ticket to there 2nd stage support team and hopefully will have a fix soon. Once I hear back Ill attatch the email with there recommended fix for those of you that bought the game via steam. This wasnt the only error i had that tech support was unable to fix right away.. I had the error RSGCLauncher.exe - Generatedan exception that could nbot be handled. Then it gave me the Process and Thread ID in the error box. Basicall the resolution to that error was... Steam for some reason was unable to install the game 100% so you must manually go to your steam folder/steamapps/common folder and execute the RSGC Launcher file yourself. SO this, "yes" gets your game to run (until you get this ZLIB error) but it doesnt allow you to run the game through Steam. So even after this install issue is (manually fixed) it still wont run through steam, even thogh the game is purchased and DL'ed through Steam. So hopefully this may help some of you that read this..and once I get the fix (hopefully get it) I will post the response from tech support .... fun game though... and ig you havent played Crysis Wars.. check out my server.. fun as hell cya all in game

I also get the error, and found that uninstalling the game completely and then re-installing fix it for a while

 

I'd say its caused by files getting corrupt while you play.

i first installed the game with dvd1 of epenis and dvd2 of darkcoder this gave the error zlib20 then got another source probably seems razor version but even that after 1-2hrs of play had given the error and now when ever i load the saved game it gives the error just coming out of the room`s door.

 

what i think its nothing to do with the source to confirm can anyone post if he is NOT getting error while installing from same source i think there will be many.

My friend is getting various files corrupted (mostly rar) and also getting this error. So maybe there is some filesystem error in OS.

It's not the DVDs or the DVD drive.

It's not a filesystem error.

It's not a crack problem.

It's not a problem with the game code.

 

I had both the RC20 and ZLIB20 errors. Both turned out to be a result of bad memory. Running memtest+ v2.01 showed that one (or more) of my memory sticks was bad - 4x1Gb sticks for 4Gb total. I was also seeing bad or missing textures, freezing and generally bad game performance.

 

Before testing the memory I did a reinstall (from a harddisk copy of the retail DVDs) unnecessarily as it turns out. No! The reinstall did not help or change anything!

 

Removing 2 of the memory sticks solved the problem. These two memory sticks happen to be Crucial Ballistix memory sticks and it is the second time in about 6 months that they have failed, first set was replaced under warranty after 32 days and now it has failed. I guess I'll send these in under RMA and then never use them again, I'm totally disgusted with their performance (they have particularly slow timings).

 

My other 2 memory sticks are OCZ and perform perfectly so I've just ordered a new set of 2x2Gb OCZ's since memory prices are very low just now.

The problem was destroyed by re-installing the game.

 

Just turn OFF all programms and video drivers (like CCC (Catalyst Control Center)), turn OFF the Internet Connection and launch the installer. I have that problem with ZLIB20 everytime when i re-install game and if you understood, i don't install any mods, just empty original game. But now, all is good! Try it, may be you can find answers for your questions.

Mine crashes in 10-40 secons, beat that! Really.... But where I should download that piece of sh*t, without +15.0Gb worth viruses? Give me an idea, and why the hell, just MY GAME CRASHES SO FAST???

The problem was destroyed by re-installing the game.

 

Just turn OFF all programms and video drivers (like CCC (Catalyst Control Center)), turn OFF the Internet Connection and launch the installer. I have that problem with ZLIB20 everytime when i re-install game and if you understood, i don't install any mods, just empty original game. But now, all is good! Try it, may be you can find answers for your questions.

Umm... I have no idea, at... How that could help.. But I try that, and I tell the results, and the time, when it crashes .

THE RESULT!!! 51 Seconds it taked for me, before it crahed, to the desktop! So, that helped me... Like... 6 Seconds!!! Yay! I got 6 seconds more time for playing GTA IV!

Good news, especially for me, lol, anyways, I got it working, without that ZLIB20 -error!!! Only thing, what is annoying, is that, the game crashes, in... 50 seconds, still, but no ZLIB20 -error. :l ...

Edit: It came back!! F*ck! WHY. IT. WON'T. JUST. GET AWAY!? I hate GTA IV's bugs & glitches, more, and more, and more!

Get your hands on another set of installation media, and reinstall using that.

 

Confirmed working.

 

I was LANing this weekend just gone. A friend was having the trouble you speak of. We did a bit of searching. ZLib is a commonly used compression library. We figured it was probably an error uncompressing something. Given his crash always happens in a few given areas of the map, we figured it's probably a corrupted texture or some such.

 

He had reinstalled 3 or 4 times using his disks. Never worked properly. He reinstalled using mine, worked perfectly.

I am pretty sure this is a texture missing error. I usually get it when I import a broken texture into the game. The way I solve it is just to check the latest cars or whatever I importet with sparkIV and then importing something else that works in it's place.
