Argh ok so I had to reinstall windows after some good hours of GTA 4 gaming (unrelated) and when windows was done reinstalling I tried to enjoy my GTA 4 again and guess what? when I tried to start it through steam nothing happened.. after trying a couple of times I uninstalled GTA IV and decided to download it (6 hours) again to find out that "Rockstar Social club" once again refuse to start! So here I am... I cant start "Rockstar Social club" and because its needed to play GTA IV AND you CANT for some reason download it from the homepage they made for that sh*tty platform (even when I have a username and password/account already registered) I cant start the game THAT I PAID FOR WITH MY MONEY! So what the heck am I suppose to do now? And yes I tried to launch it from my steam folder with RGSCLauncher.exe but nothing happens.

Please someone tell me I missed something? (before I go out and kick a baby)

It's possible that when you reinstalled windows and downloaded the game, the redistributables required to run the game were not reinstalled.

If you bought the game from steam, you should have them all in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv\Installers

RGSC requires dotnetfx3.0 so try running "dotnetfx3.exe" if you are running Windows XP 32, or "dotnetfx3_x64" if in Windows XP 64.

For the game to work properly you'll probably need to run "vcredist_x86.exe", "wmfdist11.exe", and "xliveredist.msi" if these were missed.

Thanks for the fast reply but I already had all of those installed and still nothing.

Only problem here is that the RGSC launcher wont start.

If only there was a way uninstall RGSC and reinstall it again..

Which version of Windows are you running?

Have you checked the registry to make sure both GTA IV and RGSC are still present?

WIN XP and yes in my steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv folder there are 3 folders

GTAIV

Installers

RGSC

And as far as I know everything thats suppose to be in them are in place.

I wouldnt mind if you or someone on this forum could post a screenshot of

C:\steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv\GTAIV

C:\steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv\RGSC

That way I can compare to see if something is missing or not.

Ok so I tried to uninstall and delete steam and everything in its folders.

Downloaded and installed steam again then waited another 7 hours for GTA IV to download again and guess what? RGSC STILL WONT LAUNCH!

So now I'm all out of ideas on how to play the game I paid for.

Still have any ideas on what to do next?

I tried launching the game from the GTAIV.exe shortcut in the steam folder and finally I got a message saying:

"This application has failed to start because xlive.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem (but do not count on it... P.S We just bought new sh*t for our office with your money! Mike got a new lamp)"

I added some of the last part about Mike but I guess I should track down "xlive.dll" and where to put it when I do find it

Ok so I tried to reinstall xliveredist.msi again one final time and it made some xlive files in my system32 folder without GTA IV working.

So tried to put only "xlive.dll" into my GTAIV folder and got "GTA IV FATAL ERROR: WS10"

I then tried to put the 3x xlive files "xlive.dll, xlive.dll.cat, xlivefnt.dll" in my GTAIV folder and rebooted the computer and now we are back to zero.. game wont start/RGSC wont start blah blah.

So if there are anyone out there with the same problem.. I tried and nothing that I can come up with works.

I have the same problem, when I try to launch social club nothing happens. The odd thing is that if I run RGSC.exe with the .NET debugger(mdbg.exe) it runs fine.

If I'm really lucky pressing Play even launches the game.

Ok so I gave up... I threw in the white flag and I threw up blood on the floor

I thought to myself "I wont let this happen... I wont let GTA IV win this fight" so I put on my boxing gloves again and googled my way to THIS thread:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/show...ad.php?t=763672

I followed the steps there and SWANKZ! it works! I can finally play my game again.

Thank you! Starting RGSC.exe via debugger works.

Sorry, this may sound like a stupid question, but I don't know the first thing about using this kind of program. What do you have to do to run something in the debugger? I've tried "run d:\rgsc\Rockstar Games Social Club\1_0_0_0\RGSC.exe" and variations of that, but all I get are errors which I don't understand. Help please blush.gif .

Bought the game, as rockstar said GTA IV problems were all blown out of porportions. Now I can't even launch the game because the social club application crashes when I run it on my system.

The error is: "RGSC has encountered a problem and needs to close"

AppName: rgsc.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.0 AppStamp:491dd2bd

ModName: kernel32.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 ModStamp:4802a12c

fDebug: 0 Offset: 00012aeb

So far my 100 dollars got me two hour of installation fun and I can't still even get into the game....... This Sucks!

Well, I downloaded the SDK so the I could use the debugger to try to run RGSC, I tried both the launcher and rgsc.exe, the launcher gave me the error and the .exe causes the following message to appear in mdbg.exe

STOP: Unhandled Exception thrown

Exception=System.InvalidOperationException

it proceeds to list a lot of things, most null, I will include those that are not null

_message="The requested Performance Counter is not a custom counter, it has to be initialized as ReadOnly."

_stackTrace=array [192]

_remoteStackIndex=0

_Hresult=12146233079

_xptrs=0

_xcode=-532459699

This is unhandled exception, continuing will end the process

Thanks for the tip, never would have thought of quotation marks. It still doesn't work, I'm getting a smimilar message to Clawdius_Talonious, but at least I know I'm not just getting the commands wrong biggrin.gif .

I'm almost certain the problem is with the FRAMEWORK installation. since there seem to be errors with the performancecounter class. I'm scared it'll never work whatsthat.gif

Just noticed something, when I ran the 1_0_0_0\RGSC.exe through the debugger, RGSC was showing in my processes list in the Task Manager. So that sounds like the known problem of running the RGSC but nothing happens. so does anyone know what's next?

I was getting no help from tech support. They only advised me to make sure my graphics drivers were up to date. Most unlikely that social club needs the latest shader protocols to register for a social club account. Therefore, I decided to spend a day reformatting my hard drive, reinstalling windows and all of my programs.

I am happy to inform you that the problem has now resolved and I can play GTA IV. However I am quite disappointing about this whole experience. No reply from support for days, many people in the community having the same issue with the social club program. With no solution in sight.

It should not be the case that a reformat of windows is necessary to play a game.

  • 11 months later...

i bought a new gta 4 it use to work good on my old pc but slow so i upgraded my system just for this game, earlier my system requirements just met the recommended specs and now my system requirements are above the recommended level (after upgrade). but still even after formatting the whole machine and various installations of the game. gta 4 social club fails to lauch and gives an error.

i have xp service pack 3

core 2 duo 2.8 and 8 gb of ram and 1gb of agp card (nvidia 9400 gt)

i tried installing without internet connection

i tried installing without upgrading windows

i tried installing with all upgrades and a virus definition( just in case of any viruses)

and tried installing the .net 3.5 sp1 separately

and various other ways which may not be important to describe now

i tried xp 64 bit

i tried vista home edition also

but the error does remain and doesn't allow the game to open

(note: at times during the installations of the game it use to respond and i was able to play as well. but that would be only till i did not shut down the machine, the moment i restart the machine, !!!!!!! devil.gif THE DAMN GAME IS HISTORY devil.gif !!!!!!!

IF ANYBODY WHO FACED THE SAME SITUATION AND GOT A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM, PLEASE SUGGEST

THANKS IN ADVANCE

1. look in the FAQ for directions on how to properly install .net framework. And no, installing 3.5 only is not the proper way to do it.

2. if number 1 fails, use xliveless.

I'm having the same problem and starting to think that GTA4 isn't a game at all, but an elaborate torturing device .

You no longer have to launch or have Social Club software installed in order to play the game. Just update the game to the latest version and star it.
