GTA 4 PC Patch Now Being Certified By Microsoft

Is it jut me or does the wording of "Overall Memory Savings" seem wrong? Wouldn't they just normally say "Fixed Memory usage" or even come out and say "Fix Memory Leak" it's kinda cryptic.

Phrasing it that way means they aren't acknowledging that there was a leak, or even a problem. I assumed that was why they phrased it as they did.

Guys, talk about reading too much into something, obviously memory savings is implying fixing a memory leak.

Oh yeah, it couldn't possibly mean reduced/ optimised video ram usage.. Silly me!

• Overall savings to memory

• Graphic improvements to particle systems and mirrors

They should help boost overall performance, or at least help remove the stuttering!

Same here, I think they purposely make it ambiguous to keep people in the boat. In other words, we might have fixed it but we're not telling hee-hee!

I think it`s more like `We might have fixed it, but we don`t know! So we will just be ambiguous!`

I don't understand why Steam users should wait for the GFW certification process. mercie_blink.gif

Probably because Steam users still have to use GFW to run the game?

Isn't the multiplayer of Steam version handled via Steam?

No.

It still uses GFWL. Only difference between Steam and retail is that in Steam you can download it, nothing else.

My theory is that the patch will come today since there will be Windows updates today (Tuesday)

So I think Microsoft will approve the patch along with the updates.

I hope Im right.

If this is the case I don't understand why Valve allowed this (beside the obvious reason, money). GFWL is kind of competition for them, is it not? It's like if you have a Porche car dealership selling Toyota's cars.

Hello from Russia, guys. Poor peformance on my PC, near 8-17 fps outside, and up to 30 inside buildings or on the coast with 1024x768, textures on medium, view distance 10 etc.(Specifications meet Recommended requirements and even better) We here just sitting and waiting for upcoming patch, maybe it will fix this problem.

This game is such a great one, but all the glitches makes it look like vice city

anyway i got problems with flickering shadows when i move my mouse the shadows appear and dissapear all over the streets and the texture problem sometimes to

and that is f*ckin anoying, oh and the headlights of cars they flicker in nights so thats f*ckin anoying to

so basicly we need:

1. be able to turn view distance up to 100

2. texture quality to high please ! not f*ckin medium !

3. fix grainy shadows + flickering shadows all over the place

4. use gpu more , and cpu less !

5. i would be very happy if that could be fixed ffs !

my specs:

c2d E8400 @ 3.6ghz

asus P5Q Deluxe

4 gigs of kingston hyperX ddr-2 1066mhz

WD velociraptor 300gig - 10.000rpm HDD

2 x ati EAH4870 512mb each, in crossfire mode...

etc etc...

that should be more than enaugh to run the f*ckin game on more than maxed out GODAMIT !!!

I get 55fps on average in crysis DX10 with everything maxed out on 1650x1050.. mad.gif

True - I bought it on Steam because I wanted it straight away and at the time, nowhere had it in stock. It is also good not to need the disc in the drive.

Erm.. no, not necessarily.

"A defect in a program’s dynamic store allocation logic that causes it to fail to reclaim memory after it has finished using it"

In other words, the memory is not being purged correctly.

How about using occluders or some other optimisation and not loading as many textures as it currently is where possible = reduced vram

Or mix in lower-res textures onto smaller, none immediately noticeable objects (possibly even use depth of field to hide their quality), once again reducing vram requirements.

(there's many options here)

The fact is, what they've said is vague - we will have to see, but I expect a disappointment following one of the biggest fails of PC game releases in history.

Agreed.

A memory leak is nothing but an unused unallocated block of memory. It's a programmers error and a trademark of sloppy programming.

Too extensive VRAM usage is, on other hand, something that delves deeper in the way engine operates. Like stated, it can be optimized better considering LOD.

I expect they will fix some of the most evident errors, but memory leaks will probably remain as they appear only on some systems. IMO they will probably decrease memory usage (like they stated) and thusly more people will be able to use higher res texture packs.

Just an FYI for those that find their PC fairly unresponsive when they close GTA 4 down. The problem isn't GTA 4 it is actually games for windows (oh wow big f*cking surprise there). Try this out, when you close GTA 4 down and your PC behaves like a paraplegic Bill Gates (we can dream can't we) then bring up the task manager and find the task "Xboxstat.exe" kill that process and lo behold your PC becomes useful again.

I discovered this lil trick when I was playing Fallout 3, I would quit the game and have to wait an absolute age before I could use the PC again.

Yes, a lot of people have that problem.

Its a shame though, expected much more from R*.

The patch probably won't solve all of our problems, but if they could solve the lagging issue or memory leaks, that would be much appreciated.

I hope v-sync will be properly implemented, it makes not one bit of difference to the FPS in game. I can see its off when using -novblank because of the minor tearing, but get no big fps jump like in other pc games, I can stand still outside the safe house and get 18fps with it on & off. wtf.

Thank god I have a 360 and can play it on there.

thing with Vsync is with triple buffering enabled you'll get near enough the exact same FPS. The problem with tearing you're getting is actaully a combination of UNDERperformance, where as you'd normally get vsync to cap the frames to your display's settings in order to eliminate tearing caused by OVERperformance. You're out of luck, vsync appears to be working correctly.
