HousePlant
It seems like these tips benefit people with lesser GFX cards most.
Officer_Dufus
V sync is the refresh rate of the game set to sync with the refresh rate of the monitor. The lowest monitor refresh rate you can choose is 60hz. So when vsync is enabled it will cap your frames-per-second at 60fps. I don't see how disabling vsync will net faster gameplay, seeing that it would already allow 60fps

I don't see how disabling vsync will net faster gameplay, seeing that it would already allow 60fps  It will increase frame rate because the machine will never be idleing. What games do is wait for the vblank before starting a new frame. This makes sure that the frame is displayed nicely and that the game does not display out of sync with the display which causes gfx tearing. So if your frame rate is low, disabling this removes that rate and generally improves things, though it may cause a few graphical issues is is generally a good compromise. However don't expect miracles! it juts helps a bit.
topeira
creating the commandline.txt really helped m game run much smoother. the HIGH textures look so much better its erecting. i think it was the -nomemrestrict and the -novblank that helped my FPS thanks a lot for this thread. i love u guys! you are all ALPHAs! feedmyspitz
I did a fps measurement by fraps, here are the screenshots before novblank after yes the screen was messed up here because i alt+tabbed..
DaleyG
Yeah ur screen was messed up, Thats why u gained fps, when those graphical bugs occur u get better FPS. Try loading again, u will maybe gain like 1 fps. Gameplay will be smoother tho.
Pixelated
You can also ALT-TAB out of GTA IV and kill LaunchGTAIV.exe from the task manager with no noticeable side effects, if you are worried about it using resources that is. I think that executable monitors your system for emulators and other "InSecuROM EULA Violations". LOL. I haven't tried it with multiplayer though. HousePlant
No, that's only half of how Vsync works; it will speed things up. I don't have time to explain right now but you should look it up. It doesn't necessarily lock you to 60 it locks you to the closest even divisible that is possible which will tend towards lower than you would get without it. killer_iv
@killer_iv No problem. Did you also disable V-blank(synch)? Whoops, I made a mistake when I made that "COMMANDLINE.TXT", but now i've fixed it.. its even BETTER!!! I AM LOVING IT AND THANKS ONCE AGAIN Statistics Average FPS: 51.21 Duration: 29.11 sec CPU Usage: 64% System memory usage: 67% Video memory usage: 89%
[email protected]
this is crazy i have tried everything. Ati drivers Dna 8.9 8.10 stock 8.11 8.12 rc3 The crack helped the game but i think my CPU is just too damn slow

nagumo10001
V sync is the refresh rate of the game set to sync with the refresh rate of the monitor. The lowest monitor refresh rate you can choose is 60hz. So when vsync is enabled it will cap your frames-per-second at 60fps. I don't see how disabling vsync will net faster gameplay, seeing that it would already allow 60fps  Because v-sync also forces the 3D title running to limit its framerate to the next lowest even divisible of the monitor's refresh rate when the 3D title can not meet or exceed the refresh rate (in the case of possible excess, the extra images are simply wasted and dumped from the frame buffer till the next v-blank cycle withing the spec of the refresh rate). That means a PC capable of running the game around 45FPS would be limited with a refresh rate of 60Hz, possibly to values as low as 30FPS. If that PC can't manage 30 FPS then you are again reduced to another even divisible cap. v-sync can really hinder performance greatly in machines that are just on the brink of playability (it's far less an issue for high end machines capable of high and consistent framerates). Only use v-sync where your machine can at all times match your monitors refresh rate or at least keep close to it (55+FPS for 60Hz). Breadman86
Maybe I did the commandline thing wrong? No improvements. Put the crack on, both command lines, installed the patch, still mostly unplayable during the day and totally unplayable at night at 800x600, low textures, low rendering quality, and everything else set to 0 or 1. Kurgen
They already did, on the previous page. Create a text file, and name it "commandline.txt" (without quote marks), and type or copy/paste this into it : -novblank -norestrictions Save the file and dump it in your main GTAIV folder. fuzikiller
Well did that, but that doens't work either :s Don't have that extra graphics menu to :s retail version. Everything works.. except that Edited December 7, 2008 by fuzikiller
Kurgen
What "extra graphics menu"? The text file simply disables two things. The easiest way to see if the "norestrictions" is working is to load the game normally without the text file, go to the graphics settings and press "auto-configure". Take note of the settings it recommends, and quit the game. Now put the text file in the game folder, and restart the game. Go to the graphics settings, and press "auto-configure". You should see a difference in what the game thinks your hardware is capable of, and it should "overdrive" your settings into the red, so to speak. The actual performance gain/loss you experience as a result of this will vary greatly depending on your hardware.
fuzikiller
Oh that's what it's all about.. I was thinking that there was an extra menu to ajust all settings separatly.. Indeed, if I do the "configure itself" it's overloaded like it says .. Hmm, what about all other settings then? Nothing extra?

Yeah, it would be great if they implemented separate settings with the patch(es), but I doubt it. TBH, the main thing the TXT file does with all its different switches : -novblank-norestrictions -nomemrestrict -frameLimit x -fullspecaudio -windowed -width xxxx -height xxxx -texturequality xx -renderquality xx -shadowdensity xx -viewdistance xx -detailquality xx (these are examples, not to be used without prior knowledge!) ...are little more than limitation removers, and a few that simply spell-out what you can set in-game anyway.
