has any1 noticed a performance increase from upgrading 2gig to 4gig ram?

I did that yesterday, from 2GB to 4GB (XP Pro 32bit recognizes 3.5GB) and there was no noticeable change in the performance at all.

As I understand it, there won't be - on a 32 bit OS, each process can only address 2GB (the operating system can address 3.5GB). That said, on Vista, you lose a lot of overhead (up to 1GB) to Aero etc, so you need something on top of that 2GB.

As you can see, no noticable difference at all...

BTW, these are not my gameplay settings, but I went with highest possible...

Though, I didn't notice any improvement in the gameplay...

Just spent this late hour trying this instead of sleeping, great... sly.gif

resc10? isn't that the out of video-memory failcode? that one's related to the current 'memory leak' problem, which isn't fixed by the new drivers. r* will have to sort that one out.

in any case, this is a pretty harsh blow to all those trolls out there. the dev's are gonna fix this train wreck, piece by piece. just you watch.

I haven't managed to succesfully install the 180.84 drivers yet, I guess you have to remove the old ones first! But when I do I'll post results.

Gameplay is playable but jerky despite acceptable fps.

For higer res:

Video Mode: 1024 x 768 (60 Hz)Average FPS: 25.12

Feels really jerky

I tried the new drivers, still pretty much the same. Doesn't look any better. Minor improvement, IMO. I didn't test the FPS, but subjectively it seems to make the FPS more consistent, not higher. Less of the herky-jerky when passing under the train tracks and such. The driver is worth installing, but it's still looks like crap and has slow FPS.

This game severely needs Anti-Aliasing... the jaggies ruin the way it looks. This driver doesn't make the anti-aliasing work. The game seems to ignore what I have set in the Nvidia control panel, and the in-game settings reset themselves every time I open the game?!

I'm glad to see Nvidia doing something, but I think Rockstar is going to have to release a patch to actually fix the game to run the way it should. Given my system specs, I should be able to run the game at 1680x1050 (my LCD's native resolution) with all settings on low and get a steady fast framerate like I can with every other game. GTA4 is still slow, even at 1280x960. This has the feel of a game that's still in beta and isn't yet ready for release.

My System's Specs:

Q6600 OC to 3GHz

P45 Gigabyte Mobo

4GB Mushkin DDR2-800

BFG 8800GT 512MB

SB X-Fi Gamer

640GB WD HDD

XP Pro x64

15000 3Dmark06s

Hm I'd think Rockstar should be fixing these issues. Why should the video card companies be fixing what Rockstar didn't optimize for in the first place?

Just checking, do these drivers work on notebooks? I'm running a 9800M GTS.

One sure way to find out.

I myself see no change in my performance.

at all.

but hey, nice try r*/nvidia

I am still playing teh game as it is. I'm kinda fine with it.

I don't think Rockstar could release video card drivers even if they wanted to. Of course, they are working on a patch from their side, but the video card vendors always do their bit.

holy crap, that was faster than i thought. i'm trying it now. if it works, don't expect a response in the next hour as i intend to check if the memory leak is fixed or not.

Hey dude I don't think a Nvidia driver will fix the memory leak, this is usually caused by the actual game code and is not related to drivers. Correct me if I am wrong.

yeah, i already found that out and posted it too. still, they're fixing this thing bit by bit. so long as they get it properly working before christmas, i'm not too bothered.
