Bad thing .. settings are reset every time you restart the game , and got a little los of fps in benchmark..

Can't see any performance update or downgrade ...

And automatiquely the settings are set a way to high ..

yes since the new drivers the settings wont save. This happend too when I took out my 8800GTX and then put in a gtx 280, but went back to normal after the 8800 was back in (with 180.48). Now with these drivers it dosent matter which cards in, it wont save.

everytime i have changed the drivers the settings always revert to default, so you need to delete that cfg file again like is posted in another thread

Just installed these new drivers, my games sorted anyway. smile.gif

Getting in excess of 70FPS indoors and lowes it drops is to 28 in heavy traffic at full speed in a Felzer.Averaging 45-50FPS now out and about, hitting the 60s when walking around.

For me this driver is awsome, for others it still probably sucks unfortunatly.

I have my CPU overclocked to 4GHz and I am also using the command line.txt with -norestrictions -nomemrestrict applied.

 

15FPS between the 180.70 and 180.84. Not just that though, look at the setting changes now too.

Julsey52, I would get 4GB of RAM if you are using Vista or XPx64.  I'm on XP x64 and my RAM usage gets up over 2.3GB while playing. Get 3GB if you're in XP or Vista 32-bit, since that's most it'll use.  2GB should be OK for XP 32-bit, but definitely 3GB+ for Vista since it maps some of the system RAM as Video RAM when gaming.

I don't know if it'll run GTA4 any better, but x64 seems to run smoother in general. Main advantage is that you can use much more RAM, which is good since Vista uses so much of it. Only problem with x64 is drivers for old hardware and that some older software doesn't work (though most of that doesn't work in Vista 32-bit either). You will have to reinstall from scratch, I don't think you can "upgrade" from 32-bit to 64-bit Vista, though you can use the same CD-Key for either.

 

I used Vista x64 for awhile, but it's performance was so much worse than XP x64 for video encoding that I had to switch back. If I was using my rig mostly for gaming, I'd use Vista x64 and bump RAM up to 8GB.

As for myself, I have a 7600GT, 2gig ram, core2duo. The game runs smoothly on lowest settings. But I have no in-game menu, and no mini-map just the minimap-blips.

Officially, the 7600GT is not supported for GTA4. Basically it's not powerful enough, and I don't think it has shader model 3.0 - which GTA4 claims to require. That may be why you're missing things on the screen. The only card in the 7 series that is supposed to work is the 7900. I'd say you need a better video card for it to work - get one with at *least* 512MB VRAM if you want it to be at all decent looking. I'm using an 8800GT and it's barely enough.

 

That said, you can just install the new drivers and find out if their compatible. It won't let you install them if they aren't. I really doubt it'll help, though.

Yes, in a fashion. It certainly runs faster... but now it has a new kind of texture bug; black noise over everything. I'm giving up and waiting for a patch now.

Edit: I deleted my original post but anywise,

for all those people with laptops download and run the 180.84 driver since it will unpack it to (drive):nvidia/operating system/180.84

 

Then go and download nvidia mobility tweaker from driverheaven and run it then select where your driver is an it will modify the files so it will work with Mobile graphics cards. worked for me.

A bit off topic, but some people asked at the beginning of the thread if 2 vs 4 GB ram make any difference... here are my two cents contribution:

 

I was on 2GB ram previously, and ordered an extra two for twenty quid from the internet. It made a HUGE difference The game is now playable, and disk thrashing seems to have gone away. Previously after 10 mins of playing the system would start swapping and framerates would drop to single digits - i.e. it was NOT PLAYABLE ON VISTA64 WITH 2 GB. Now this doesn't happen at all. When I quit the game it still spends a long time accessing disk (there is some sort of memory leak there obviously), but it's now perfectly playable.

I'm using Vista 64, core duo 2.6 ghz and a 8800GT.

 

I recommend a ram upgrade for anybody with a vista-64 system, since mem is so cheap nowadays, and until the official patch is released. Not sure how it would affect other OSes though..

you don't need to uninstall sod all. it's better that you keep the old one and install over it, so if the new driver backfires you can 'rollback' onto the original one.

Thats not a nvidia card lol. Boot in safe-mode and install the latest ATI drivers from the ATI website. Also uninstall the nvidia ones.

I got a 2fps boost here so average is now around 18. What all of us Core 2 Duo/Amd x2 users need is a patch or a driver from intel or AMD to lower the cpu usage and R* should give us a patch to do that as well since this game mostly relies on your Processor. I bet if a patch like that happened if it was good we would all see 5-10+ fps gains for those of us with C2D or AMDx2 processors.
