4870x2 problems

Hey guys,

ever since I've installed this game there's been nothing but problems.

- First of all...very poor and blurry shadow quality -> user posted image at these settings user posted image

Will this be fixed in the upcoming patch or is this just lousy programming?

- RESC10 Fatal Error (Out of video memory - Please re-boot your system).

This happens a lot to me and I have no idea why, the 4870x2 has 2048mb GDDR5 Ram and should be more then plenty?

As claimed by Rockstar : With the latest ATI driver (8-11 series) the game supports crossfire modes (ie. 4870x2)

Although the settings only show 1011Mb..but I think thats normal?

- In many cutscenes im having rendering problems! Its usualy their face not showing anything except teeth and eyes and the rest is just blank.

Also yesterday ALL the cars had the same problem and showing nothing but weels and some parts...very annoying.

- Multiplayer. I tried deathmatch yesterday and got booted out 3 times after getting an error saying that my system performance was running too low...

- Saving Keybinding. Every time I start the game again all my keybindings are gone...

My spec :

- Vista 64bit

- Club3D HD4870x2 with 8.11 Catalyst drivers

- E8500 3.16Ghz Dual Core

- OCZ 2 x 2GB DDR2 1066mhz Ram

- Asus P5Q-E Mobo

- Samsung Spinpoint 1TB 32mb Cache

My system should be able to play this game perfectly I think?

Anyone else with the same spec and problems around?

Perhaps someone that got it fixed?

Any help is appreciated!

Just goes to show that the graphics problems are not limited to those of us with "less than stellar" rigs... 2x 4870's should have absolutely no problem running this game on full, especially with 4gb OCZ ram + 3.16ghz dual core.

Actually, he's not referring to 2 4870's... He's referring to a single HD4870X2... The Dual GPU graphics... Also the fastest single graphics card currently on the market. The thing is, the 4870X2 also requires crossfire support due to the dual GPU nature of the card. The card has a total of 2048Mb (2Gig) of video memory, but is actually halved, 1gig of dedicated memory per GPU each on their own separate dedicated 256 bit memory bus. This does a good job of managing possible bottlenecks. The problem is in gaming such as GTA4, is that it only reads 1gig total instead of 2gig total memory that the card is actually capable of. The memory of both is still being used, the games just not showing that available memory.

I have the same card, same OS (Vista 64bit Ultimate), and 4gigs of system memory. And I'm experiencing similar issues... Particularly in regards to performance. Specs are as followed.. (copied from one of my other PC posts in a hardware forum for custom PC builders)

Intel Core2 Quad Extreme QX9650 overclocked to 4.02Ghz on a x10 multiplier

12Mb L2 Cache (3Mb each core)

Asus Maximus Formula Motherboard w/ 1333Mhz FSB overclocked to 1600Mhz FSB with Gigabit LAN

4Gb Corsair Dominator PC8500+ @ 1066Mhz w/ Cooling Fans

ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2Gb GDDR5 Graphics Card

Asus Xonar D2 Sound Card

Compro T500 T-DVB Digital Tv card

x2 Sony DRU-810a DVD-RW Burner

Pioneer BDC-202BK 5x BD-ROM + 12x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter

3x Western Digital 500Gb Hard Drives (2 of them RAIDed)

ThermalTake BigType CPU Cooler

Acoustimass Deluxe Acoustic padding

Tagan TG1100-U88 1100w BZ-Series Modular PSU (x6 12v rails)

2x 120mm Fans, 3x 80mm Fans, and 1 additional top mounted exhaust fan which can be turned on and off by flipping lid

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit Edition

Dlink DGL-4300 Gigabit Router

Viewsonic VX2025WM 20.1inch Widescreen Monitor

As you can see... My system shouldn't even need to break a sweat with this game, especially considering that there are no anti-aliasing options in game. But I am having performance issues... Also, I'm noticing what seems to be a memory leak in the game... I have a G15 keyboard which I always keep the screen to always show processor and memory performance. This game never hits 50% of total CPU usage.. usually between 5% and 40% depending on what the game is doing, but the memory when the game first loads shows my total system memory at about 46% to 53% and consistently and gradually increases... Never reduces, and never really levels out... Just gradually increases as you play the game until it hits between 81% to 85% and then game crashes. Pops up an error. Kills the game. Then dumps the memory which drops back down to about 36% to 43%. Reload the game and the same pattern happens over and over again... Generally I get about 45min of play in between crashes and I've gotten into the habit of saving my games everytime I see it hitting about 80% of my memory, because I know a crash is coming, and sure enough, every time about 5-10 minutes (sometimes less) afterwards in play... The game crashes. Looks like a memory leak to me... They should look into this.

Also one other thing... On the game box, it claims the game has been "Optimized for 64bit", but the game always runs in 32bit as can been seen by looking up the process in the task manager.. Whats the deal?... False Advertisement?

So no, people with lower spec'd system shouldn't listen to the line of bullsh*t they're being told by the "pencil pushers", because people with high spec'd system are also having major issues. Myself included.

i get excatly the same mate.

heres a little work around for thoose with a 4870X2 getting fatal error resc10

if you play the game in high textures the game will crash often with fatal errors.

but if you put the textures down to medium the game never crashes, a few glitches but no crashes.

the render quality doesnt affect the crashes at all.

1. start the game.

2. tab out and close social club in the agent bar.

3. put the texture down to medium.

4. play without crashes.

my game run flawless on high textures but it still crashes after 1-2 missions.

this problem has nothing to do with memory its just a bug.

note: i have played over 10 hours with theese settings.

you can turn the settings up abit without touching the textures, this is just an example.

When your talking about nothing to do with the memory, are you still talking to him or to me. As my description of whats happening on my system memory as a result of running this game, is a legitimate observation.

I have a similar setup:

mobo: P5Q pro

cpu: e8600 was @ 4.0, now back to stock @ 3.33

ram: 4 gigs back @ 5,4,4,12 - 1.8v

gpu: ati 4870X2 2 gigs ddr 5 ram (only 1 gig actually 'counted')

sound: Realtech HD

OS: xp sp3

I was able to run the game for a day and a half (did not shut the game off once during that time), but after closing the game and a reboot (hoping to fix the horrid performance issues I was having) I am unable to run the game at all now. I get the infamous BSOD now whenever I try.

I have a thread around here as well ... all I can hope is that it is an easy to fix problem.

I'm going to go try right now, anythings worth a shot. I'll keep you posted. I'm running into the same problem and according to FRAPS am averaging from mid teens to mid 30's for FPS.

I don't think the GPU is kicking into "3D Mode" when I enter the game. The fan does not increase like it does when I enter any other game.

Settings are:

Video Mode - 1920x1200 60hz

Aspect Ratio 16/10

Texture and Render Quality - Highest

View Distance - 35%

Detail Distance - All the way up

Vehicle Density - ~50% up

Shadow Density - All the way up

Only showing 1011Mb of Video ram available. (should be approx 2048?)

I have tried both the catalyst 8.11 and the 8.12beta drivers.

Sad for this level machine I think, considering Crysis and Warhead both run 30-40FPS according to FRAPS and the bench programs.

System specs are as follows:

Intel E6600 @ 3.2Ghz

Asus Maximus II Formula

Sapphire 4870X2

4x 1Gb Ballistix [email protected]

Corsair HX1000w PSU

4x 74gb Raptors in Raid0

WD 500Gb SATA2

Creative X-FI ExtremeGamer

Logitech Z5500's

Samsung 24" 245BW Monitor

Vista Premium 64Bit

Update

Well since I turned the textures down to Medium, I am no longer crashing out of the game. Played for 8 hrs today with no RESC10 crash. Just for the fun of it a few hrs ago I bumped the textures back up to high and behold it crashed about 20 minutes later. I dropped back to medium and again no crashing problem.

I have the same prolem with my 4870 X2 card ... very poor performance, only 1007mb detected by the game and once like OP said only teeth and eyes would show instead of the full face,

Additionally I get the Street Lamps flickering Rapidly at night.... did you 4870 x2 owners experience the same problem?

I did as you said and it does allow me to play longer, but that memory leak is still there. Only now, instead of crashing, once the memory is full, there's a much more noticable delay in texture loading... And I'm talking 1 to 2 secs delay. Also, there's considerably more flickering textures..

Also, just so we're clear... When I'm referring to the memory leak... I'm talking about system memory, not video memory... I do not currently have a way of monitoring video memory on the fly.

Try hitting Ctrl + Alt + Del when in the game and start the task manager. It just minimizes the game. Under the performance tab you can monitor your resources while still in the game. Good Luck.

Remove the "-norestrictions" command from commandline.txt/or shortcut.

I had the exact same problem and that solved for me

/me jumps on board the boat...

I have a Gigabyte 4870x2, 4gb ram, q8200 (overclocked a little to 2.8), Gigabyte x48-dq6 mobo, vista 32 (will be trying out 64 tomorrow) and am experiencing all of what has already been said.

On high textures, resc10 fault, only teeth and hats showing etc, removing the -norestrictions command fixed the teeth/face issues, but it still crashes out after a few minutes with a resc10 error.

On Med textures, no more resc10 crash, but I'm having horrible texture pop-ins..

I guess I'm glad to know others are having the same faults as mine, but I'm ticked off at the same time. How do games these days get released without being tested on high end cards like the 4870x2? I mean, its a "future" game, but doesnt run on the latest and greatest?

I'm just generally annoyed, I forked out $100 for farcry 2, which ended up in a game which crashes to desktop after about 45 mins, which still hasnt been fixed, or even acknowledged by ubisoft yet...

Tried Stalker Clear Sky, was bugged about 15 mins into the game and I was unable to get past it, still not fixed....

So after those disappointments and against all my better judgment, I decided to give Treyarch a go, even tho forums were filled with, "its treyarch who destroyed COD 3" talk, it actually turned out to be a WORKING great game! There was a patch available on DAY 1.

This boosted my confidence a little in getting gtaiv on day 1, how sad am I now again.... sad.gif So I now have two versions (PS3 also) which arn't worth playing. The ps3 version was laggy, UGLY on my 3meter theater screen and I cant aim with those damn controllers, so I decided to wait it out for the pc release.

Oh wells...

Another thing, I doubt that the 8.12 ccc driver will help ( released tomorrow I believe) as I've been using the beta version with no benefits. Probably will need 8.13 drivers.... more months of waiting

Try removing those 3 commands. Actually thats what I did to solve mine, i was asuming that norestrictions did the trick for me.

Cheers

Rockstar claims that the game has undergone thorough tests... Doesn't seem like though. There's no doubt that the HD 4870 X2 is the latest and greatest, so I was quite confident that this GTA 4 would run without any performance problems. I really thought that Rockstar took time off to optimize the game for PC, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I didn't have any problems with Far Cry 2 nor Fallout 3, both games runs smoothly with everything maxed out - even AA. I am aware that these games can't be compared to GTA 4, I am just stating that I did not run into any complications with Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3. On the other hand GTA 4 has been a nightmare... Installation went smooth, but performance wise it's a mess and it crashes a lot as well. Even Gamespot have addressed these issues in their review calling the game a "Lazy PC port".

I don't expect the ATI Catalyst 8.12 to give us any performance boost either...

The game showing 1011mb as the resource limit is correct. This is a dual gpu card, which means each gpu has 1gb of dedicated memory. This means that at any time the most either gpu can use is 1gb. So the frame buffer for this card is going to be 1gb, not 2gb.

If ATI Catalyst 8.12 will give us nothing, I think about disappearance these errors, I will breakdown... Rockstar Games, c'mon, don't give up, you can do everything, even repair these mistakes...

I was talking to Rockstart tech support and the guy I was talking to said that the patch we are all waiting for fixes the memory leak known with ATI cards. The memory leak causes the RESC10 crash(so that should be fixed).I am running the 8.12 beta drivers and will be playing tonight. The official 8.12 drivers should be out tomorrow on the ATI website. This actually isn't the case with these cards as I have found out myself, check your dxiag command from windows for proof...

It is a single card, it actually has 2gb VRAM, like what it says on the box, and the reason I bought mine.

I phoned rockstar and they told me to turn settings down, I tried it and things don't look that good, when I go fast in a car some entire streets flash for a milisecond almost dissapearing. It never shows the actual VRAM I have in game, so I tried the '-availablevidmem 2048' command line, it started showing in game, but it doesn't actualy stop the REC10 crashes sad.gif

Rockstar, is this going to be fixed in the patch, I made a crazy risk getting the top card in such hard financial times, so I would appreciate some feedback if you can, please.
