Sevael
This is a big beef I have with the PC version and I'm quite surprised that I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere after extensive searches on multiple GTAIV PC forums. In the console versions (and I assume the PC version if you're using a controller), you can make Niko walk, run or sprint. Does anybody know how to make him run when using the keyboard? The On Foot 'Move Forward' key (default W) makes Niko walk. The 'Sprint' key (default LShift) held together with the 'Move Forward' key makes Niko sprint at full sprint speed. But there doesn't appear to be any way to make Niko simply run and not sprint. While sprinting, Niko is very difficult to control because he can only make shallow turns. When chasing NPC's through buildings and up and down stairs where constant turning is required, sprinting is just not effective. It takes Niko a couple of seconds to stop sprinting and begin to turn in tight spaces, causing too much stop-and-go, giving the escaping NPC an advantage. Sprinting is really only effective in a straight line. And walking is far too slow to maintain the chase. If there is currently no way to make Niko run when using the mouse and keyboard, this is a huge oversight. It blows my mind that they would leave this out. One of the main reasons to play the PC version is for the keyboard and mouse controls, and the lack of a run function effectively neuters your ability to move around efficiently. Does anybody know of a way to get Niko to run? Even if it means replacing the ability to walk, so be it. Walking is useless and running is very important. Or are we stuck hoping for Rockstar to add the ability to run in a future patch? Lioshenka
JohnnyK77
For me it's: W = walk Space (hold) = run Space (tap continously) = sprint Obviously, I have rebound sprint to Space. Are you saying you are getting the sprinting by just holding the key? Have you tried a different keybinding?
pinky
That is Niko running, try tapping the sprint button and then you will see the sprint kicking in. Just like in SA.
un om bun
Is there any way to control him without turning him with the mouse ? I want to be able to walk in one direction while looking in another. Just like in the good 3rd person games...
Sevael
Honestly, I have not tried a different key binding. But when Sprint is set to Left Shift (which is the default), he will only sprint and not run. Yes, I know the difference between the running and sprinting. I've tried both tapping Shift and just holding Shift while pressing W, both with 'Always Run' set to Hold and set to Toggle. In every case, I only have the option of walking or a full out sprint. I will try remapping Sprint to another key and see how it goes. If remapping it off of the default is the only way to get it to work properly, that's pretty silly, isn't it? Unit Deserviced
I am going to chime in and say that I also have this problem. Not only is it impractical to move around using only walk and sprint, but it looks very bizarre. At least the default move speed in MP is a regular jog. I'm annoyed with how Rockstar approached the player's movement on foot with the keyboard in general. As far as I'm concerned you should be able to move identically to SA, as in strafe, face where the camera is without needing to shoulder your weapon, et cetera. Hell, if it was that way with the gamepad as well it'd be great. It's like they took a step backwards considering how the player is likely to move in the pc version. The mouse (predictably) sure is great for shooting stuff, though. Lioshenka

You can get similar resulst with keyboard holding forward and opposite side direction key but not as smoothly. I tend to use a joypad mouse combination so I can do this very thing a little smoother than keyboard mouse alone.
Sevael
Okay, remapping 'Sprint' to a different key worked the way it does on the consoles (hold to run, tap to sprint). It only works that way when Always Sprint is set to 'Hold', but that's okay. However, the functionality doesn't work when 'Sprint' is bound to Left Shift no matter what. Very strange. So I'll just have to get used to holding down a different key instead, until Rockstar patches this bug. Thanks for the help, guys!

I use keypad, so I have PgDn set to toggle Run/Walk and extremely annoying that Nico always sprints. I remapped my controls completely before even trying the game, so up until now I didn’t even know that there was a movement speed between “walk” and “sprint”. I was just annoyed at how horrible the controls were when running. Now I know that I have to turn off “Always run” while waiting for the patch (which will probably be 3 Gb, consisting mostly of intensified copy protection). I too remapped my keys before starting the game, but I still use SHIFT for run/sprint. Has anyone contacted Rockstar/Take2 support to report this? They can't fix it if they're not aware of the problem.

But you're absolutely right, using the toggle should not force sprint on you. Players should always have options, not be forced into tiny little roles that developers assume they will want to take. This game is ghastly when it comes to the lack of options, both in terms of controls and in terms of graphics settings. Many developers have learned that when it comes to video games, especially PC games, customization is king. Clearly this isn't on the GTAIV PC team's priority list. They would win more customers (many more customers) if they would put greater effort into meeting player's needs and desires. And really, creating things like key binds take far less effort than things like creating characters, weapons, buildings, vehicles and missions. There is no excuse for such a sloppy offering. A single patch could potentially make a world of difference.
jolly_jay
Making sharp turns is fine whilst sprinting. I hold downt W & shift to sprint...then press A or D to make sharp left/right turns or mouse alone to make shallow left/right turns. As to running...the running action is definitely there cause when Niko tires out...he merely runs. You would think there would be akey you can map to it....without having to tire out. I must say....i like being able to walk though..that is one think i hated about GTA SA....only being able to run or sprint.
VickeX
Whats this talk about running and sprinting? In my opinion (and from what i know rockstar has said to), what you call running is called Jog, and sprinting is running. Don't you agree? When i run, i don't jog like Niko. It's nothing important, just something i noticed.

Ravexdistrict
God I hope this makes Bernie Crane's first mission do-able now. Couldn't do it since Leftshift wouldnt let me jog, just sprint. Now, we'll see.
jolly_jay
The default keyboard settings has sprint set to left-shift key. If you remap your sprint to another key (left-mouse button in my case) the new key becomes run and the new key + left-shift key becomes sprint. So in other words i have: Walk - W Run - Left-Mouse Button Sprint - Left-Mouse Button + Left-Shift No tapping required to simulate running. It is strange though....because now when i look through my keyboard mapping i dont have left-shift assigned to any action....but it is still my sprint action (when used with run). Let me know if anybody can confirm that this works for them also. It's working perfect for me. Lioshenka
Mercyforall
Arg still doesnt fix bernie Crane. He just doesnt like me moving at all! Though thanks a lot for this hint, love the fact I can jog and sprint now.
TheJasonGallant
To reply to your question, the left shift will sprint... If you change this fonction, he will run if you hold and sprint if you tap... Just change the running key.
