Redback911
I own this game on the PS3, but I prefer to play GTA multi player via my PC. I purchased the game a few weeks ago, then waited up to 12am so I could download it as soon as it was released. I did not anticipate too many performance problems. My PC specification is: Vista 64bit Ultra 4Gb Ram Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q66002.40GHz Nvidia 8800 GTX (768Mb RAM) 2x 15,0000rpm (RAID configuration) running OS and game files 1x 10,000rpm (single configuration) running OS pagefile When I installed GTA IV, I hit the first issue with the Rockstar Social Club, and I was unable to log into the system. I signed up for Windows Live and when I launched GTA IV and when prompted to enter the Windows Live system to save my game progress I crash out of GTA IV every time. However, these issues are annoying but they are not my main issue. If I do not log into the Social Club and Windows Live (forgo my save games) I can run GTA IV and enter the game. The performance was horrible. I entered the graphics settings and chose the auto detect settings. I reloaded GTA IV, ran the game, again really bad performance. I then adjusted the settings to low and reduced all of the other settings (View, Detail, Vehicle and Shadow), restarted my PC, restarted GTA IV and again terrible problems. Next, I ran the benchmark tests on various settings: Auto Configuration Average FPS: 15.73 Duration: 37.31 sec CPU Usage: 81% System memory usage: 68% Video memory usage: 63% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: Medium Render Quality: High View Distance: 25 Detail Distance: 37 Medium Settings Statistics Average FPS: 16.72 Duration: 37.31 sec CPU Usage: 85% System memory usage: 63% Video memory usage: 63% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: Medium Render Quality: Medium View Distance: 25 Detail Distance: 37 Low Settings Average FPS: 16.06 Duration: 37.30 sec CPU Usage: 84% System memory usage: 68% Video memory usage: 52% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: Low Render Quality: Low View Distance: 25 Detail Distance: 37 So the results? Almost no noticeable difference in frame rates, regardless of the settings. I then removed all my existing graphics drivers, used Clean Sweeper, restarted and downloaded the latest NVIDA drivers. Restart PC, load GTA IV, and inevitably crapper performance and the benchmarking again shows 16 FPS. I also checked my rig against Game-o-Meter: I then decided to reformat my system, new drivers, new installation of Windows Vista 64bit Ultra. Again, very poor performance. Also I still have the windows live and social club problems. So, will GTA IV admit that there is a problem or am I being delusional and should lower my expectations for FPS on my current rig? Devils Dog
Have you tried lowering the video mode/resolution. I am running at 1024x768 on a 8600GT and getting 21 fps on low

Redback911
Hi Devil, I forgot to mention that I lowered the resolution as well with almost no improvement: Statistics Average FPS: 16.54 Duration: 37.30 sec CPU Usage: 88% System memory usage: 64% Video memory usage: 58% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1280 x 1024 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: Medium Render Quality: Medium View Distance: 25 Detail Distance: 37 Hardware Microsoft® Windows Vista" Ultimate Service Pack 1 Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX Video Driver version: 180.48 Audio Adapter: Speakers (High Definition Audio Device) Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz It seems that the game refuses to run beyond 17 FPS on my system. Mr Heckler
I'm running at 1280x1024 as it's what my monitor supports... benchmarks give me an average 37fps regardless of the video settings. The game also refuses to retain what settings I choose, each time I start the game it has reset them to what it thinks is right, which is pathetically low. I have textures set to medium (won't even let me select high render set to highest view distance set to 60 (won't let me go higher) Everything else below that is set to max. Yet each time I load the game everything is set back to less than a quarter. My rig is only 6-8 weeks old. AMD Phenom quad 9550 (2.2ghz) 8GB ram nVidia 9600GT 500GB SATAII HD This setup creams everything I throw at it, I can even crank up the AA and AF settings on games with no slowdown and no drops in FPS to below acceptable levels. It brushes of Far Cry 2, UT3, NFS undercover, COD4 as if they were 10yr old games, it runs tham that brilliantly. Rockstar screwed up bigtime, I suspect in these economic hard times... they fired their entire testing dept and instead assumed we'd do it for them. In sipte of those average FPS in the benchmark, my ingame experience differs greatly, and it becomes jerky and unplayable.
dienamite
Your benchmarks should be averaging around 40fps, something's really wrong here. Do you have shadow density set to maximum? If so try turning it to 0 and re-benchmarking. If no to the above, have you upgraded your CPU from a Dual Core? You might not have set the fsb correctly in the bios. I set my Shadow Density to 0 and reran the benchmark testing: Statistics Average FPS: 16.88 Duration: 37.26 sec CPU Usage: 85% System memory usage: 65% Video memory usage: 63% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: Medium Render Quality: Medium View Distance: 25 Detail Distance: 37 Hardware Microsoft® Windows Vista" Ultimate Service Pack 1 Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX Video Driver version: 180.48 Audio Adapter: Speakers (High Definition Audio Device) Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz My PC was a Quad Core from new. I will check my FSB settings in my bios to make sure. Thanks for the tips by the way. I am happy yo try most things but I have to admit I am starting to see the benchmark ingame footage every time I close my eyes, and I do not think thats too healthy :-)
Redback911
I could not find any FSB information in the BIOS. I downloaded CPU-Z, this is my current setting: My bus speed is 266.7 My rated FSB is 1066.
ronoc74
CPU-Z doesn't detect if the CPU is throttled. I don't know if it's possible for the CPU to fail to throttle up but I guess anything can happen. You can check it with RightMark clock utility. It should throttle up during gameplay. NIPSEN
First, dont use the performance test of GTA4 to see how your system work, use FRAPS. Then, overclock your CPU to 3Ghz or more !
