NarcissusG
Hrmmm. Where to even start? My specs: mobo: P5Q pro cpu: e8600 was @ 4.0, now back to stock @ 3.33 ram: 4 gigs back @ 5,4,4,12 - 1.8v gpu: ati 4870X2 2 gigs ddr 5 ram (only 1 gig actually 'counted') sound: Realtech HD OS: xp sp3 My problem: At first, I installed the game and went through the vast amount of 'hoop-jumping' required (social network, activation, account creations, etc) and after all of that was done, started the game. I've played it most of the 3rd and nearly all of the 4th (today). I was very unhappy with how low my settings were and even more so with the graphics and lag of the game. I thought it was unrealistic given the power of my machine (not a super-computer, yet it is the fastest graphics card, the fastest C2D [e8600 which I also had OC'd at 4.0 with zero probs]), and I have run most all of the newest games at their highest settings with no lag at all ... none. I figured it was most likely a driver issue. Keep in mind that I had left the game on since I first started it. I saved and quit the game, then restarted my computer. After re-boot, I tried to jump back in the game to see if that might have helped (often a restart can do wonders for a game after installation) ... and the following is what greeted me: I shut the social network off, restarted again (clearing mem - just in case), and started updating drivers. I updated everything on my computer that could be updated (including xp updates and bios) ... I then uninstalled and reinstalled the game ... Then after the final restart, I get the following: Now, after uninstalling, clearing and cleaning my registry, and reinstalling ... When I try and start GTA 4 using ""LaunchGTAIV.exe"", I get a quick disk icon replacing the mouse pointer for a sec, thena quick flash of cmd prompt (can just see the flash of an outline), then nothing. If I try to run the social club, the following is what greets me moments after it running (either offline or connected to social network): I don't know if this is something wrong with my PC or if the game is just screwed, but I can't understand what created the change here. At least before, it was running. My first thought was this is a hardware or software conflict, but that would explain the changes between a simple game uninstall and reinstall. I'm totally confused, a whole lot unhappy, and generally pissed off. Any help/asdvice would be absolutely appreciated!! Narcissus

Celest
Perhaps Rockstar should provide insurance for user's PCs in case their game causes them to explode? Given the number of issues, such is my impression after 10 minutes on this site...
NarcissusG
Perhaps Rockstar should provide insurance for user's PCs in case their game causes them to explode? Given the number of issues, such is my impression after 10 minutes on this site... To be honest, I don't know that R*'s game is what is causing my problem ... I suspect it is as I've had this system built for several months and had no problems with any other game, but I'm not 100% positive. Although, truthfully, I wonder if anyone ever can be. Just got back from the latest attempt at a fix (uninstalled net framework 3 and installed it directly from the dvd) ... had a pleasant experience of the exact same thing: the launcher flashes the mouse icon showing it is reading the dvd, then a brief flash of a cmd prompt, then nothing. Running the social, I waited about five seconds before ... the dreaded BSOD. I'd cry if I weren't so frustrated. Any other suggestions out there???? The bit about the insurance was mainly sarcasm...I too am at the end of my tether and completely and utterly disappointed also. Like you, I've had my system for about a year now, and has a spec higher than that "recommended" by Rockstar, though my game wont even install. I've been at this virtually all night: desperately trying to find a solution. I guess I should count myself as lucky as at least I spent the majority of the last two days playing it ... unlike many people that got nothing. Neorg
I am just thinking does Rockstar nows about this game problems? Or the y just sitting and counting they money that got from selling this BUGED game. P.S. Sorry for my English.
NarcissusG
I am just thinking does Rockstar nows about this game problems? Or the y just sitting and counting they money that got from selling this BUGED game. P.S. Sorry for my English. Your English is just fine. Just so you will know, it is not 'out-of-the-ordinary' for a massive flood of posts to appear in the technical support area after a major pc game release. It happens virtually every release because of the sheer number of different computer systems that games need to be compatible with. It probably won't be long and they will release a patch that fixes 75% of the major issues. I've just never had a game give me a BSOD (blue screen of death) when it is 'right-out-of-the-box', hence the reason I posted here looking for ideas and suggestions that might help. I'm not defending R*, but it is a simple fact that game developers almost always stay quiet while working out the first major wave of bugs. At most, they usually just make a statement saying that they are preparing a patch to fix a few issues and that it will increase the game performance as well. Standard fare really. It is virtually impossible to placate pissed off customers who already paid for a product, but cannot use that product yet. It isn't that they are hiding somewhere and gleefully laughing because they sold a bugged game ... they are just staying quiet until they release a patch that will help the majority of those pissed off customers. Anyways, I'm still open to suggestions as I have tried everything I can think of to no avail. Narcissus

But Rockstar could release some message that they are working to solve the problems. That could give people a hope thas soon they can play a (great) game. And i think your problem is the graphics card. I hade the same problem with STALKER C.S. but after ne patches and newest ATI drivers (8.11) game is working thery good. Soo we have to waite for a patch.
modCJpls
I've heard that SecuROM may be the problem, because it interferes with some programs that are required to run the computer (When securom is run, it writes itself to the Kernel, allowing 100% access to every feature in your computer). If securom detects one slight program it doesn't like then BOOM! task terminated, BSOD says hello.

I hope that isn't the problem as, from what I've read, R* put a lot of money into the anti-piracy methods like securom ... I don't see them releasing a patch that would remove those protections just so that I could play the game. I'm so damn frustrated ... can anyone think of a possible solution that I haven't tried? I'm considering wiping and reinstalling my os to see if that will work. I hate to do that because I have everything just the way I like it and moving files to storage and then back ... ugggh, hours of work. dnottis
Same issue - started after a reinstall of XP SP3. Worked fine in an existing install. I believe it's something securom needs that is missing (hasnt been installed by another game already).
