extender
Just sell your high end GPU and buy 8800 series or if you have one at home then put it on and try. So far what I've seen I can tell that 8800GT outperforms 280GTX etc. I was reading 10 pages of topics from this forum and everyone with 8800GT are happy. They get 50fps with high settings and with Quad/C2D CPU and game run smoothly. Looks like GTA IV knows how to stress 8800GT/GTX cpu and knows how to use it resources. So I did some "research" and there are the results. Im 90% sure that 8800 series and good C2D or Quad with the 8800 is the perfect setup for this game. TruXter
I play it great on a 9500 Then again, I am not new to pc gaming I know what and how to build. You have to understand that alot of people in here now that are mad just sold their consoles and had dad and mom break themselves buying outrageous parts that do not match and bottleneck bad. extender
Yes. Then it is your computer problem. You have to understand that games just wont run good if you install them. Your rig has to have good setup and it has to be config. correctly. Also you have to install latest updates for directx and your gpu. And then you have to tweak also. I'm gonna start to think that 90% people who whine about how badly this game runs, just don't know how to maintain their computers...
slowrider
I play it great on a 9500 you've got it working fine on a geforce 9500gt? i have one and am suffering from memory leak, or whatever causes it to slowdown randomly after ten minutes. can you post your rig's specs? Drag_Drift
OP, that is the most goddamn best advice on these forums. I'll sell my GTX280 to buy an 8800GTX to play GTAIV on high and FC2, Crysis, CoD, GRID, GRAW, NFSUC and NFSPS on mid. /sarcasm

dnottis
Thats because the game auto configures and the draw distance is less on an 8800GT or GTX than say a 896MB GTX 260 or 1024MB 280 GTX. DROP YOUR VIEW DISTANCE TO 22 AND YOU WILL BE HAPPY!!! I'm running 1680x1050, all high, sliders about 3/4 except view distance and my average is 59FPS. Using Q6600 @ 3.7Ghz, 4GB Ram and 260 GTX (756/1566/1242). The key is the view distance is auto configured and higher for cards with more ram, keep it at 22 view distance and you will be happy with performance!! BTW the game runs even better in XP SP3 than Vista x86 and x64. I know, I've tested it Edited December 5, 2008 by dnottis
RedAero
FYI, your video card is the smallest factor it seems. This game is CPU and RAM intense, since it's a no-good console port. Although the odd thing is that people with damn near identical setups can experience wildly different framerates. I have an 8800GT with a 5200+ X2 and get single digit FPS with most of the game on medium, while other play on medium-high with a similar if slightly slower setup. I might turn the shaddows down a tad, it seems a little gloomy. I learned long ago not to go to large with a monitor, it stresses your video card.. dannythepetrock
notice the detail and view distances set on the higher end cards are maxed compared with the lower end which are all less than or equal to 50. does that tell us anything? PestilenceJM
This might explain what the problem is. But it doesnt solve the problem. Whatever the exact problem is, i dont care... i just expect to be able to play a recent game with recent hardware. I am still having fun with GTA 4 and i play it right now (alt tabbed), even tho its at 25-35 FPS and lower in multiplayer. But i am looking forward to some updates or whatever to let this game run better on others and my hardware.

extender
notice the detail and view distances set on the higher end cards are maxed compared with the lower end which are all less than or equal to 50. does that tell us anything? Yeah. With 20/30/40 Distances it runs slightly better. So people should lower those with their high end GPU's and then run the test. Why the hell do you even bother maxing things out when it ruins your gameplay performance and lowers your fps drastically? GTA IV is about gameplay not graphics. But it looks like people are some kind of graphic whores who wants maximum eye candy so perhaps you should go and play Crysis... I would be happy with Good resolution, high texture details and rendering and medium car density and low distances(Not too low tho but still acceptable). Also turn down your shadow density, it eats your FPS and performance. People just have to learn how to tweak settings but most don't and thats why they get poor results and game runs crappy even with good computers. TruXter
Exactly, game play first with gta... once we get vid cards that can support it's tremendous image files, it will be good a little bit longer.. I love the mind of Rockstar and real pc gamers.
