My opinion - mid-level machine, game works fine.

Okay, so I havent been "super hyped up" for GTA 4, but i definately waited for it to be released on PC. I understand the game is a port, but you have to think...GTA has been on PC's for AGES. R* should know by now to thoroughly alpha/beta test their ports before they are released. Now, onto my "review":

 

Installed game. Already peeked at the forums so i was prepared for the social club/MMA error, so that didn't even bother me. The only REAL "problem" I have so far (i'm currently on the mission after you get drunk) is the programming and visuals of the game, and everyone is aware of that.

 

I don't care how R* wants to be the "first" company to make a next-next gen-type game, and state "This game is recommended for machines with parts that haven't even been invented yet." That's the stupidest bullsh*t I've ever heard. Make this game to work on MAX settings with CURRENT technology. Crysis kind of pushed the level with this, but quad-core machines with SLI setups had no problem running on max.

 

I'm on 1440x900. Medium-ish settings, don't know the FPS but it's DEFINITELY playable. I enjoy it a lot actually, but i can't say i LOVE it because i can't max out the settings:

 

I'm on a quad-core, 2.4ghz...Q6600 i think? I forget. 2 GB ram, Win XP, SP3, latest updates, 8800GTX 768... i should be able to play CLOSE to max settings at least. Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead - Maxed out, current-gen games and i love it. No reason in the world GTA4 should be this much of a system hog, bottom line. There is no defense that could change my mind... the whole "in the future it will look good" defense is stupid. The future is now, make a game that works good NOW - in 2 years when we can max out GTA4, there will be a GTA5 in the making and/or many, many better games.

 

Bottom Line:

 

Great series of games. I like the game so far, I've only just started...haven't really had any crashes, etc... R* should have still tested this game much more, and fixed the myriad of bugs and system issues before releasing. I would expect R* to patch this game ASAP, within the next week or two, and also i would expect R* to issue full or partial credits or refunds, or even like a 'rebate' type deal where you can mail in proof you purchased game, and they send you a $20 check for your problems, or even if you can't RUN the game, a full refund (Valve had the right idea).

 

For those of you who can't run the game, wait it out. Wait for a patch - if R* drops the ball on that, never buy another R* game again - simple as that. For those that CAN run the game, let us laugh at everyone and enjoy Just kidding, I really do feel for those who got the sh*t end of the stick on this, especially those who CANT get a refund for whatever reason.

 

Rockstar, get on the ball with this game. Make your employees work overtime to get this patch created and TESTED, then released.

Im worried I am going to have problems having read what I have as mentioned just waiting on D2D but although I am worried I am slightly hopeful since its rockstar, you see I just not long ago bought 2 EA games , namely mercs 2 and Spore and they were seriously botched and one of the Spore patches EA released didnt even do anything! One made the game worse and now they are milking it using pre cut out parts of the games as stupid minute addons and in the case of Spore in my view its failing but I am hoping rockstar will by default take the exact mentality you are highlighting in your post. Im just checking all the threads but this smells of gothic 3 optimisation issues and I totally dont buy this futureproofing rubbish lol I mean we are talking big business here and its ridiculouis to think that they would consider selling a game which doesnt fully work with any PC and more to the point it be an ecconomically viable option. Add to this that theres no way professional developers would be arogant enough to try and forsee where computing is going, that has been done so many times in the past and never works out.

 

I hope rockstar get an optimisatation patch done as people will stop playing if they dont get patches out regularly as in 1 in every 3 weeks until the game is rock solid

I really like the game also.

 

I believe that the reason why we only see people in here crying..

 

Is because the real true pc gamers are right now playing the game

because they know what it takes to get their rig running.

and will be back later to post once the

converted console kiddies fade into the back.

The sad part is R* owns one of the best-selling gaming series of all time (not THE best, but one of them)...and for someone like me, i love the games...i wasn't a fan of san andreas too much, but i liked GTA3 and vice city.

 

Second...while us "ancient" GTA players sit back and say "wow, GTA4!" and then R* just completely craps on the port.
