MrEff
I've got the same problem with winflash locking up my computer and from the looks of things ruining my card. However I'm getting no luck with replacing the card with an old 6600GT I had. I have an Asus P5K Premium motherboard, would the crash have effected the bios on this? Will reseting the mb bios do anything to resolve the problem?
Simmos
when u messed up your bios try this: 1. Download the full 128K BIOS http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/152/images/4870.bin 2. Flash it to your dead card. 3. Done. Since the dead card will not POST anymore you have to use another graphics card as your primary VGA adapter to boot from it. Then go into DOS and find out which adapter number your dead HD 4870 has using Atiflash: atiflash -i. Now flash the BIOS using: atiflash -f -newbios -p [index] 4870.bin. Replace [index] with the number of your graphics card from the -i command. Another way is using ATI Winflash from Windows. Start Winflash, select the correct card and flash away. After the flash is done, remove the second card and boot from your now working HD 4870. MrEff
Just one thing. The only other card I have to hand is a Nvidia one, will this prove to be problematic?

MrEff
Ok, so I've got it booting into windows, but can't get winflash to work either by just doubleclicking on it or using the cmd box, any other suggestions?

MrEff
I've tried the DOS method using an old usb thumbdrive I had and received the following error: adapter not found error 0FL01 : press 1 to continue What the hell am I doing wrong? Seriously, this shouldn't be this difficult. EDIT Using atiflash to check the slot in wihich my ati card is in only brings up one result, my old Geforce card. This isn't promising. This thrend is like "everyone with a hd4870 has this freeze problem", but so is it not. many people can run the game perfectly with hd4870 without this fix. Can't recall it happening to me in any other games though. Thanks to this BIOS fix am experiencing the full glory of IV. Wow. Need some time to process it. Shutupanddie
The "freezing" problem is mainly a problem with the Sapphire HD 4870, as Sapphire released it with a f'cked bios. And yes, the "freezing" happens in every game that's more demanding than Pac - Man. You can play some games some hours before it freezes though, but eventually it will freeze and you have to reboot. F'cking Sapphire. I've gotten in touch with the store where I bought it and I'm returning it, hopefully I'll get another 4870 from either ASUS or HIS, which aren't known to have this problem. dolev18
Can someone tell me what file should i download? about that: The BIOS update from Sapphire, http://www.sapphiretech.com/us/support/drivers.php An alternative download from RapidShare, http://rapidshare.com/files/14833927...rking.zip.html the first url link have a lot of files to download, and i just don't know what file shold i download, and the rapidshare link doesnt work
aaargh777
take the first link, so you can be sure its original and not an virus or so... The way to get it is VGA->Saphhire HD 4800 Series ->SAPPHIRE HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI-E and there you will find the Bios-File (the 2nd downloadable file)
dolev18
I handle with the files. I have a new problem. when I get to this point: "Browse to the install path of ATI WinFlash (fex. C:\WinFlash) Run the BIOS update by executing: atiwinflash.exe -f -p 0 1e8501sa.002 Wait until the flashing finishes, should it fail do NOT reset, yet try to flash again If it worked, reboot your system. " I'm loading the file, but I't won't finish flashing and i get this message: P/N mismatch.
aaargh777
you have to do it from an dos-environment, not the cmd from windows. i managed it with a bootable usb-stick, try http://www.bay-wolf.com/usbmemstick.htm , copy your folder with the flash-files on it, boot and run flash.bat. that did it for me
dolev18
Someone can explain me how to do it with usb-stick? Some of the links are not working. please someone help me to do it step by step.
SAM911
The instructions to do this are as follows: 1. Create your USB boot stick in windows with USB Boot drive, found at: http://www.bay-wolf.com/utility/usbkey/usbmemkeyboot.zip 2. Download the boot files and extract them to a folder of your choice from: http://www.bay-wolf.com/utility/usbkey/win98boot.zip 3. Download the BIOS update from Sapphire, http://www.sapphiretech.com/us/support/drivers.php make sure that you have Sapphire HD 4870 512 GDDR5 PCI-E. 4. Run the SP27608 program. Select the correct USB device from the drop-down menu, set file system to FAT32 and check Create a DOS startup disk. Then browse for the extracted boot files (now in the folder of your choice) and press start to begin formating it. 5. Copy ATIFlash and the BIOS file to the USB stick under Windows 6. Restart the computer 7. Enter the Motherboard BIOS (by pressing the Delete key at startup) and set the first boot device to the USB stick that you created 8. Save that settings in the MoBo BIOS and exit 9. Your PC will then automatically boot to DOS 10. Flash with the command as described: "atiflash -f -p 0 1e8501sa.002" (without the quotes). And then wait till it prompts you that you need to restart the PC 11. When rebooting, go back to your MoBo BIOS and change first booting device back as it was before Edited December 15, 2008 by SAM911

gtarmanrob
hey guys a quick question, in the OP it says the SKU on the green sticker on the cards box has to be SKU#11133-00-20R. but on the Sapphire website it says SKU#11133-00-XXR ... meaning any card in the 'R' series right"?...my SKU is 11133-00-41R. do you think its ok to still use? every other number is identical, the part number, SKU, everything, just that one little bit at the end. maybe the TC got it wrong? Mirek90
Hi people ! I'm new here and I want to ask something. I have Radeon 4870 512 RAM DDR5 but in Crossfire mode... and I have an "application error" problem... so... will bios update solve my problem too or does it work only for single 4870's ? Cause I don't want to deal with updating BIOS if it won't help. thanks in advance for reply !
