ImoonPeople
Hello all, I just wanted to let you guys know I talked to my boss and he's going to lend me an EVGA GTX 280 so I can compare my system with this card in it. I'll give a full written report with screenshots later today. I'm working untill 7pm (EST) so I probably wont be able to post anything untill late tonight. I'll just edit this post when I do. If you have any questions or request feel free to reply. Specs: Vista Ultimate x64 Q6600 @ 3.2 1600mhz FSB (8*400) (Zalman 9700) ASUS P5E 2x2gb DDR2 800 Corsair 5-5-5-18 EVGA 8800 GTX 640/1500/1100 (Current card I own) X-FI extreme gamer PCI Aver Media TV tuner PCI-E x1 2x250gb Western Digital HD's 16mb cache RAID 0 2x SATA DVD Rom/Burner Corsair 750w PSU Special Thanks to: Gary Mandau at ComptechLLC. www.comptechllc.com We build custom PC's to play games like these! Ok just got back home. My 8800 GTX results are as shown. I did the test in 1680x1050 instead of 1440x900 (what I was running it at for play). clocks are 640 gpu 1500 shader and 1100 (2200) VRAM. All settings were maxed out. Everything on 100 besides Draw Distance, limited to 28. This was also with Max Frames Renderd set to 1. That seemed to make a difference with the stuttering for me. When I put the draw distance up it starts to come back though. This Bench was from a drive around the city: FRAPS Benchmark: (I went around the city for 60 seconds as fast as possible, where it would choke) Frames: 1404 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 23.400 Min: 15 Max: 37 8800 GTX Standard Bench PLEASE GIVE ME ABOUT AN HOUR or SO TO TEST THE GTX 280 Thank you!! If you want/need more info please ask!! Edited December 5, 2008 by ImoonPeople

GTAMonkey2012
We need some hands on rock solid tests to back up the complaints, no listens to complains but they will once actual benchmark comparison come flying in, keep us updated I have GTX 260 OC (216) near to 280 so very interested, I have a 8800GTS 640 sitting around plus my pc is dual boot with XP. I think I will have a play fairly soon with all these reports.
ImoonPeople
ya I plan to have everything here when I do the benchmarks so I have screen shots to back it up. I want to make a solid review so people have something to go by.
MMhardKy
Don't forget that the built in benchmark is not very representative.
ImoonPeople
Don't forget that the built in benchmark is not very representative. I will post the in game benchmark just because its a standard, but not a good one. They could have done such a better bench mark, but then it would show that the frame rates arent as good as it makes you think, lol rockstar. So I will post that, along with fraps running in game from the same save point so I can get a ruff estimate for framerates.
yodaman123
I have the 8800 GTX so I am interested in this.

Yeah, just make your own route trough the city and write down what min and max fps do you get and what do you get on average. I fear there won't be much difference between 8800GTX and GTX280 though. The game is optimised really THAT BAD.

ImoonPeople
Bump, I"ll be back in a few after I test the 280 with this game. Any other results that you want to see please ask. Thanks
blackforce
i hear more peeps talking about cracks and all, makes you wonder if they downloaded the game from one of the sites for free lol, cause i got it off of steam. and it do need work like let me use the mouse to walk and better eye candy, but for the most part it is running pretty good i get 40 fps with a 280gtx and a q9550 over clocked at 3.8 with 4 gb of ram
Net-Zao
The benchmark feature is pointless. I get 35 fps on very high, but in high action gamplay is drops to like 12 even on medium settings.
ImoonPeople
....alright I'm sorry I can't give a real review of the GTX 280. I installed it and had nothing but trouble. Locked up on startup and then GTA IV locked up once. When its on High textures it stutterings incredibly bad and drops down into the single digits. I couldn't believe this. When on medium texture it had no stutter but the frame rate was no better then the 8800. This is either driver isssue or bad coding. I'll try again later but i'm done for tonight. *I also noticed GTA wouldnt save my graphics settings when the 280 was in. I just put back the 8800 and everything is fine again. 13th_Disciple
I have posted a video using an 8800GTX, AMD dual core 6000, can only run medium textures... i can have them to high but i lose frames, either way your system is slightly better than mine, my GTX is running at 630/1800/1500 @ 1650x1050 (see video for settings) (HQ video recorded the screen using full HD video camera, reduced to 1280x720) (notice the &fmt=22) should be almost processed on youtube now, if you cannot see it you'll have to wait a bit and come back and view it again, high speed PC for this video or it'll stutter, anyways worked out ok, my GTX runs it very well, not the best obviously, but i could get a new CPU etc... max-pre-rendered frames to 1 via NV-control panel, latest beat drivers) -13th
ImoonPeople
I'll have to check out the video. I just went back to the 8800GTX and I'll mess around with GTA again. Also I'll be looking for fixes for the 280 since something is very wrong. Either way I find GTA IV to be great!

Yes it's great! - video is working in HD now (you should see a link to HD viewing under the screen) I'm very happy with my GTX performance, although my card is overclocked its totally enjoyable to play and looks good, bit sluggish on high textures, but fine other than that... what can you expect on a two year old card -13th
mkey82
I can't give a real review of the GTX 280. Have you removed your drivers before inserting the GTX 280?
gwalker
I get 20-25fps on my system with everything on max, ok its not that good but I could hardly belive that it runs that fast. Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4ghz) Corsair 2GB DDR2 BFG 8800GTS 640MB It's weird because my system is by no means great, in game message tells me that the GFX requirements are 1400MB or something stupid like that. I think I'll be tweaking the resolution down a bit though as it does go down to as low as 15fps while lots of explosions are going off. It definitely doesn’t seem to have been optimised properly for all hardware considering others with issues.
ImoonPeople
I can't give a real review of the GTX 280. Have you removed your drivers before inserting the GTX 280? Yes, even thought there the same driver I did uninstall the drivers, restart and install the new. I'm once again at work so I have to wait to mess around with it again. When I put the 8800 back in I ended up playing GTA IV for a bit. It runs pretty damn good for a card from 06'. Anyone else running a 280? Post system and frame rates please. MMhardKy
Well I can make you some benchmarks, but I'm so dissapointed by this game I'm not in the mood right now. The only thing I can say that the FPS will be about the same as with your 8800GTX. That's how uber-awesome this game is coded.

bryguy9021
i bought an xbox360 arcade when this game first game out from walmart. rented the game from blockbuster. beat the game. returned the xbox. thats how badly i wanted grand theft auto 4. now thats its finally on pc i raced to best buy day 1 it was being sold and snagged it up. however im having the same problems as everyone else low fps for no reason. heres my specs intel core2duo e6750 at 3.02ghz corsair xtreme something 1066 ddr2 4gb (4 1gb modules) asus p5k deluxe motherboard windows vista 64bit sp1 bfg nvidia geforce 8800gt superclocked. here is where it gets interesting i load up the game and run its benchmarking utlitly. it was auto configured for me. my res was 1700x??? 1 step down from 1920x1080 in 16x9 resolutions. it wouldnt let me go any higher then that. textures medium, shaders high, draw distances and all that were at 20's or less shadows on 3. i got 34.98fps oh using the latest drivers too 180.84. it ran alright. single player is mostly playable. but as i said i beat this on the 360 before and the 360 was WAY faster and smoother. very noticable when driving cars at high speeds. so im thinking ill turn my quality down tweak the settings a little, my goal being 60fps. went thru many different settings all the way down to 800x600 everything on low and off. i got 34.98fps this is a joke right? i know my pc is a powerhouse compared to a 360 or ps3. but i got a best buy credit card (well my girl does hehe) so day2 of me owning this game i go get a better video card. the most expensive one they had in store. i know have a bfg nvidia geforce 260 896mb of ram. cost me 340$!!!! load up the game expecting massive improvement. heck this video card is so huge it littlery does not fit in my case properly i had to mod my case a bit to make it work. it is a monster i had very high hopes at this point. run the benchmarking utlitly just like before at lots and lots of different settings i got 34.98fps ?!?!?! it does not matter what i do so far. ive been reading this fourms for hours. im about to try alot of things i read and report back with my results. just thought i would share my expeirnece thus far with the rest of the community. my theory however is the same as everyone else. this is an awful coded game. im 410$ invested in this with the card and the game i could of bought a ps3 with that!!! needless to say im upset. on the bright side i can play crysis on super crazy ultra high no problems
MMhardKy
OK, I don't even needto run any benchmarks on my GTX280. This game SOLELY depends on CPU power. Here are benchmarks from a site I always trust - german PC Games Hardware: Also, they've found out a GTX280 is only a minimal improvement over a 9800GT (yes GT!).
