Windows XistaP is best

lol, i'd probably do without the 'ista' bit imo. i mean i don't actually know how vista affects gaming these days, but forcing the min-rec ram levels up by 0.5GB makes me say XP.

I couldn't get the GFWL update to install on XP so, I swtiched to Vista and haven't had a problem since. The game works as good as it can for me, at the moment,

I have a dual boot XP and Vista (x64), and to put it simply... for me, game crashes miserably in XP (ZLIB20 error about 30 sec into the game), but it runs in Vista. Comparing Vista to the 30 secs I am able to play in XP, I think Vista has a slight edge... possibly because of the x64 and recognizing my full 4gb of ram.

That said, it's not pretty and it's not smooth (20-25 fps), but it runs... here are my system specs (it's not a bad machine, I just get limited by my gfx memory which is BS because the card itself is really good):

eVga GeForce 8800 GTS, 320 MB DDR3 memory

4 GB DDR2 System memory

AMD Athlon x64 Dual Core 4600+

I am not able to set a very high resolution, but I put textures on Medium, Distance is only at like 6... you would think my machine could do much better. The game looks like crap. I have no problems running any other game that I have every tried.

I have a dual boot too and XP 32bit plays GTA IV a lot smoother with higher frame rates compared to Vista 64bit.

Just to clarify, GTA 4 does not utilize the x64 architecture as you can see when looking at the processes, it is running in 32bit mode.

I had the ZLIB20 crash in XP also, but that only happened once for me. The only benefit Vista 64 has over XP 32 is being able to use more RAM, but from what I have seen, that does NOT translate into a better, smoother gameplay experience.

XP 32 all the way.

Theres many posts but I will repeat something, if your not sure in Vista you ca run as direct X9

1.Create a shortcut from the rockstars main folder of the exe called "LaunchGTAIV.exe"

2. Open with "properties" on desktop of that shorcut and in the target add the following additions:

"E:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -norestrictions -DX9 /high

-norestrictions = lets the game not restrict your settings, this wont do anything for FPS or performance as-is and is just helpfull when testing, some say it doesnt work for them (they still get restrictions) but again this is all about my own experience with my rig and it does work for me.

-DX9 - Runs the game in Driect X 9 mode under vista, I do know that this actualy may help things as I have tried this with Crysis Warhead and it was more stable, so those saying "Install XP vista is crap" .. if you have vista and want to try it under DX9 this is it.

/high - Runs the game under vista at highest priority, gives mem and cpu access to this over all other processes.

-DX9 & /high have made it so I dont get stutters it runs, before I had same fps without these flags but having to set textures to medium (yuck) ... so I know for a fact this has helped and made a difference. For those with xp still try "/high" even if your in DX9 by default and give it a go.

yeah i have done benchmarks. XP gets better marks (about 4 fps better on average) but in XP the game actually crashes. I have never had the game crash in vista. I also get to use 4gigs of ram in vista where as only 2gigs in xp. I could probably suck up that 4 average in vista if I turned off a lot of the background processes. The benchmarks i have done show vista is better.

Hmm actually I hav same problem in Vista with 4850HD, I posted over here. A guy said that the game was working perfectly on XP without texture probs.

So apparently it looks like the game is fine on XP but not on Vista

MY vista 64 outperformed by a little margin my XP. Also image looked somewhat better.

I have 4gb ram

Lord of the Flies

I can't run the game for more than a few minutes in XP (on my bro's system).

I haven't had any problems on Vista 64.

I've used Vista since the game was released and I switched to XP two nights ago to see how well GTAIV (as well as other games) worked on it.

My conclusion...

a) No significant difference in FPS, in the benchmark at least. Both just hung around the 15-16 fps mark on my computer (specs below).

b) It doesn't crash any more than usual... just make sure you have every single update Windows Update has to offer before installing, updating and playing anything (especially any Service Packs and .NET Framework updates). You may have to run Windows Update many, many times to get them all.

c) Since XP naturally uses less RAM then Vista, if you are playing the game on 2gb of RAM or less, XP is probably the better option. Textures seem to disappear less and pop-in isn't quite as bad (at least on lower settings). Though that could change as I play more.

Specs:

Windows XP Home Edition (SP3)

Pentium D 960 3.6Ghz

2GB RAM

ATI Radeon 2600XT 512mb

230 GB Hard Drive
