mystifier_sopranos
Just done another bench using norestrictions, here is what i got: Statistics Average FPS: 47.99 Duration: 37.70 sec CPU Usage: 82% System memory usage: 69% Video memory usage: 100% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1920 x 1200 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: High Render Quality: Very High View Distance: 100 Detail Distance: 100 The game is bit slugish when actually playing the map, to be far you can't tell much difference from 50-100 on view distance, lower this makes the game much smoother. pinky
I sold my 8800GTX six months ago for $200 and replaced it with an HD4850 for $130.Stupid people are still paying way over-priced for these cards, folks. Sell them while you still can. They have a great reputation, so they will still probably be worth $200 in another year from now though! ... First off, you sold your 8800GTX for an HD4850? Why? I bet there is almost no visual difference between the two until you get to insane resolutions and even then I doubt the 4850 beats it by much. Secondly I haven't even seen any 8800GTX's for sale anywhere other than some generic online resellers. They're discontinued. I think almost all the high end 8 series cards are technically no longer in production (Nvidia is renaming the G92's to the 9800GT). Thirdly, why would I want to sell this card when it has a lifetime warranty and was the fastest production card for two plus years and still is a high performance card. Two years is an eternity in the PC market, this card is still a beast. 8800GTX Specs 90nm Core clock 575Mhz for the vanilla card 768MB GDDR3 RAM 1350Mhz " " 384 Bit Memory Bus 128 Stream Processors 86.4 GB/s Bandwidth 64 Texture Units 24 Raster Operators HD4850 Specs 55nm Core Clock 625 for the vanilla card 512MB GDDR3 RAM 1986Mhz " " 256MB Memory Bus 800 Stream Processors 63.6 GB/s Bandwidth 40 Texture Units 16 Raster Operators As you can see these cards are very closely matched and the 4850 is great at high resolutions because of all those SP's. However I do thank ATI for forcing Nvidia's hand in the prices department as they were overpricing their cars for years. I was thinking of upgrading from my 8800GTX but after seeing the benches from the HD4850-4870 and the GTX260-280 there was little reason to want an upgrade. The jump from the 7800\7900GTX to the 8800GTX was around double the performance at higher than 1600x1200 resolutions. Same goes for the jump from the HD3850-3870 to HD4850-4870. Huge leap in raw power and memory bandwidth. The difference from the 8800GTX to the GTX280 is around 15%-25% on average. For the original price of $600 is was robbery and I feel sorry for people who sold their 8800GTX's in SLI and bought a slower solution in the GTX280. If you are upgrading from an old sh*tty card then by all means. But to sell this card to buy an HD4850 you just through your money away for nothing really that noticeable. Here's some benches to show you. HD4850 Vs 8800GTX http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Sapphire/HD_4850/26.html I am happy with my two Ultras performance too and certainly wouldn't entertain trading them for a single 260 or 280 as I would suffer a performance drop. I am holding out for a couple of liquid cooled 280s a while down the line yet when they drop in price. I do okay against crossife 4870s as well, so again they arent really an alternative for me either. A couple of 4870X2s would be nice though. I can get 56FPS on the benchmark with 1920x1200 res. Sure the draw and detail are down a little but I also ain't stupid, I know what works and deosn't with GTA games and draw has always been one of the FPS killers. Yeah I remember the draw distance mod for GTA:SA. I couldn't use it for like two years after the game was out and I had upgraded my PC. Like you said it's a killer. Ducky is King
Eh I too love my 8800GTX. I love it even more seeing as I only paid $250 for it in spring of 06 LOL Now you would all call me a liar, however if it werent for the fact that the guy on ebay was calling it a 8800GTZ I never would have gotten away with paying $250 for it. Its been an awsome card and I wont be getting rid of it any time soon. Pairing this card with a good cpu and and max ram, coupled with a fast hard drive and a decent power supply, will give you great performance for any game on the market today. Vicetopia
First off, you sold your 8800GTX for an HD4850? Why? 1. Because I profited $70. 2. My motherboard is CrossFire, and I have another 4850 on the way. 3. The 4850 is a binned 4870 (With GDDR3 memory as opposed to GDDR5) and I've already got some insane overclocks out of it. And it might not mean anything to anyone else, but the 55nm puts off less heat... The 8800GTX always turned my room into an oven... Although Anand shows far more drastic differences than you're willing to recognize; http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3338&p=1 I've been an Nvidia man since GeForce 2 (This is my first ATI card ever), but essentially someone offered me $70 to take newer tech, I can't say no. Eh I too love my 8800GTX. I love it even more seeing as I only paid $250 for it in spring of 06 LOL 8800GTX was launched November 2006. Perhaps you meant 2007. Either way the card has had an amazing lifespan. Edited December 10, 2008 by Vicetopia

13th_Disciple
So good to see those high FPS benchmark scores... Sadly I'm waving goodbye to my old trusty beautiful 8800GTX, it's been great, good, fun and reliable... I'm replacing it with a 4870x2 which compliments by 790FX chipset and not to mention a 'Phenom' 9950 quad core which really is key to balancing out a top performing system, you can have a great GFX card of course but it seems a decent CPU combination would tip the balance in your favor especially with GTA-IV... Not to mention a Corsair PSU unit (needed really for newer setups/cards etc) So for now it's tat-tar Nvidia... hello AMD/ATI! The 4870x2 is a bit of a honey-monster... and I've read all the threads & posts around here and elsewhere, don't worry I'm not expecting GTA-IV to run amazingly well...although i have seen it @60FPS...anyways, new year, new card...new problems cheers -13th

Cylon
Ashtar, I too had problem with water reflections. This is because of the NV beta drivers. When I rolled back to 180.48 WHQL the water reflections were fine. However now I have problems with tree textures. They are just one big block of brown/green colour. http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/4876/31685969wp4.jpg I don't know how to fix them. I've yet to try those beta 3 drivers. jelly
Your issue is the CPU. I don't know how to put it nicely, so I won't; the P4 is terrible. It was terrible for games even when it launched, let alone now. Why isn't your sig your hardware? That E8500 should do you nice. What is it, on order, or something? No, it's actually sitting in a box. I'm still saving for a case, RAM and PSU. I'll get it soon enough. One thing I don't understand; why is my GPU % so high on low? Oh and, P4 isn't that bad. I can play the game, and I only get 5 FPS decrease when shifting traffic density from 0-100. Dunno, your probably right though. That indicates that your CPU is holding you back.. And given the P4's propensity to do such, even in 2003, that seems like the logical conclusion. I don't know about the GPU %, it might not be correct. I know for damn sure that IV does not use 57% of 6GB of RAM.. Even though that's what mine claims. I think the patch has fixed the memoryleak issue with my pc. Its running without the lags now. I have to test it some more.. and make a new bench.. )
