zubovsergei
Whenever I turn in the game, I see objects pop in (fade in) all over. This mainly happens to trees/bushes. THis happens with objects really close to the player, not far away. Textures also constantly are redrawn when turning. Basically, objects that weren't there before fade in and this happens constatnly. System: 4.4 ghz E8600, 4 gigs ram, 2x4870x2, 64bit vista. Catalyst 8.11 All game settings on max except textures on medium. I tried lowering the settings and it makes no difference, still see pop-ins all over. It gets so annoying makes the game look like total sh*t. WHen I run the benchmark, I don't see these issues, but hard to tell exactly due to fast action. fate_sealer
I have the same problem. If you are standing still in the game, turn your view to one direction and then turn back, the textures and objects from your original view pop in (regardless of the set view and detail distance). This is an issue in every GTA game but I have the 360 version of GTA4 and the pop in is no where nearly as ridiculous as this. My real question is how can a system with an HD4850 (512MB), 4GB 1066Mhz ram, and a 10,000rpm velociraptor with an 8 gig page file have these pop in issues, there is more then enough memory to go around. It makes no sense that my system cannot beat the 360 which only has 512mb of undedicated memory and the ps3 can only support up to 256mb of textures at a time. thaCURSEDpie
Same issue here! When I walk out of the first savehouse, all the textures are incredibly low-res... 8800GTS 320mb, E6600 @2.4Ghz (gonna OC soon) 3 GB DDR2-PC6400
zubovsergei
I can understand objects far away popping in, but objects 20 feet away suddenly appearing is just total BS. Even Gothic 3 wasn't his bad.
rud
the only thing I've ever played that had such poor performance out of the box was...shudder... Boiling Point.

zubovsergei
Well I already uninstalled the game and did vista system restore to get rid of all the junk apps and services installed. This game is a good reason to pirate games. Try before you buy.
MorlockGod
Yep add me to the list. The whole world has to be rebuilt from scratch every time I look away and then look back. Nothing is being held in memory even on the lowest settings. I only have 320Mb of video RAM, but this is still way too much pop-in. The rest of the game runs fine for my system specs, but the pop-in is an immersion killer. Athlon X2 4600 8800GTS 320MB 3GB RAM XP (SP3)

vurt
Yup PC version is in fact much worse looking than Xbox 360 version (i have played both quite a lot). On 360 you have a nice blur filter that only blurs distant objects, buildings (to get rid of the terrible jaggies and flickering of it when you move around). On PC they have a blur filter too, but this applies to the whole screen so _everything_ gets blurry and will lack detail, again PC users got screwed. The pop-ups (or "draw ins") are far worse on PC, constant fading in of buidlings and objects, extremely ugly! There's some on 360 too, but not like this, at all. Overall i'd say it looks much nicer on my 90" DLP (projector) screen in 720p on Xbox360 than on my PC with 1680x1050 res.. The only thing that is a bit better on PC is the FPS and the controlls (for aiming). I wouldnt advice anyone to buy the PC version, wait and see if they'll release a patch that fixes above + numerous other "problems" (the filtering is extemely ugly), the did a horrible job with Bully and never made a patch for it, could be the same deal here. zubovsergei
Instead of spending money ON PORTING THE GAME, they spend the money on copy-protection. You know what happens when someone buys the game and finds out it has tons of bugs and it runs and looks like SH*T on the best hardware WITH lowest gfx setting? Next time they will pirate the game!! Talk about slitting your own throat. Edited December 4, 2008 by zubovsergei
reassor
yup they screwed with this one you can clearly see that engine is designed to use streaming on low memory systems (consoles) and what i cant understand is why oh god why didnt they allow usage of RAM besides VRAM for storing textures and sh*t - this just shows how many shortcuts they made in porting it. all that counts in pc version is CPU and VRAM (u can have gf8600 or 280 and result is the same) in my case 320mb vram (game reports 280 O_O) is a totall fun killer. got constant 30fps in 1650x1050 but it dosnt matter coz i cant use better textures and stuff becose when i cross over the magic vram number game starts to forget to load stuff when you move lol. im still playn but its dissapointing. when some 1 finds a way to trick gta to use ram in conjunction with Vram plx let us know it would help alot cheers
MorlockGod
I've just discovered something about the "Resource Usage". This may already be public knowledge, but it's new to me. The damn thing is subtracting the memory used for the Windows DESKTOP! Try reducing the resolution of your desktop before loading GTAIV and notice the total available resources go up. On my 320MB 8800gts card I was also having it reported as around 280MB until I stumbled upon that little disgrace. That is a shameful programming cockup. No wonder nothing was staying in RAM as I looked around the city, there was none left! Now that I have changed to the latest Nvidia 180.48 driver (and dealt with all the bugs that brought) I have lowed my desktop resolution and can at least keep the city loaded as I look around. I have to keep that pesky Resource Usage in the green though, else it is back to pop-in city. Has this desktop resolution bug been mentioned anywhere yet because there must be a better workaround. jb99
This is what I badly described here - http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=379572 At native res I get this problem. Appears to be video ram issue.
kionna
this is such a horrible problem.. im 20 feet away from a building and i turn 180 and turn back and game takes 2seconds to redraw all the stairs for the fire escape on the building!!! i can reproduce over and over 100 times!!! wtf!!!!!! q9300 quad core 4gb ram 4870 512mb come on.. this is such bs.. i've had the game since launch and still can't enjoy it.. it's just a pos programming.. f*ck u rockstar.. i shoulda waited and just pirated this piece of sh*t from the news groups.. guess i know what to do with your games next time

I know this is pretty hilarious. I can't recall seeing a game being released so bad. I suspect it will be a few months (if ever) before we see a patch fixing what is likely to be seen as a low priority issue such as this. What a joke. FWIW - the desktop resolution does make a difference... Freed up about 26MB of video ram for me.... But that's not really sifgnifcant enough to matter. The way this game is programmed I'd need to have a 1GB card to play even close to properly at my native resolution. sh*tty thing is - I just bought a $260 512MB card and have NO interest in buying a new card already. What a joke. Yes, I already said that... But it keeps coming to mind. The best I'm hoping for at the moment is someone finding a way to run this anti aliased so 1680x1050 doesn't look so frigging blocky. (I doubt they'll ever patch it for me to run at 1920x1200 on a 512MB card. Rockstar isn't exactly known for releasing a lot of patches.)
