JLF05
Ok just a thread for those being turned off buying this game... I was so close to being scared out of buying this game after reading the 10000's of threads on here about performance issues and how bad the game is, I was terribly dissappointed and ready to spend my money elsewhere... But in the end my GTA addiction got the better of me and I bought it... Straight away after installation, BAM, no textures problem... "here we go" I thought... but after calmly cleaning out my old Nvidia drivers and installing the 180.48 drivers I was able to play the game as normal, thank god. Anyway so far I've played for roughly 10 hours, I have had no other problems whatsoever, the game runs perfectly smoothly with no noticeable bogging down of frame rates, its always crisp even in highly populated areas and at high speed etc... I even have the settings bumped up a little from the defaults it set for my system... Current settings: Display: 1280x1024 Texture Quality: Medium Render Quality: High View Distance: 50 Detail Distance: 40 Shadows: Level 6 I am loving this game at these settings, not maxed out but still damn beautiful and as good as ANY game on the market imo, including Crysis & FC2. So yeah, my basic plea to people is not to be put off buying GTA-4 for PC just because of the threads you are reading on this forum, remember that people are a LOT more likely to come here and post about problems they are having than people who are running the game fine and are off enjoying it, thats why the balance seems to be so much towards people having problems... Lets face it, if you get the game and its great and running fine, you are going to be busy playing it! Not googling for a forum to complain on... I was turned off but I am so glad I still bought it. Just my 2 cents. And for the record / performance comparison purposes, my system specs are: Intel Duo Core e6600 2.4ghz Processor 2gb DDR-2 Ram ASUS P5B Motherboard Nvidia 8800GTX 768mb GPU Windows XP - SP3

dr.whiz
pretty impressive for a dual core processor. what are your fps though? either way, congratulations. and it doesn't surprise me you're on a 8800GTX since that seems to be the graphics card the developers optimized this game for. nicotin3
And for the record / performance comparison purposes, my system specs are: Intel Duo Core e6600 2.4ghz Processor 2gb DDR-2 Ram ASUS P5B Motherboard Nvidia 8800GTX 768mb GPU Windows XP - SP3 Hey, i have about the same specs. Intel Duo Core e6600 2.4ghz Processor 4gb DDR-2 Ram (corsair xms2) ASUS P5B-E Motherboard Nvidia 8800GTX 768mb GPU Vista 32 SP1. Asus VW222U 22" display. My copy should arrive today but my expectations are low.. I will need to run in my monitors native resolution (1680x1050) and with no AA my eyes will pop out and run away from me, i expected to run this with 4x AA easily and it doesnt even support AA . Yeah our systems are pretty much exactly the same except for operating systems & you having more ram, please post how you go with your game, will be interesting! you will be running it at a higher resolution than me though so I guess that will play a fairly big part on how well your rig does. Once again, please let me know how it goes!

Vista is a waste of HW and since im using 32 bit install its not using more than 2 gigs of ram anyway. I wont find much time before the weekend though. I have a fresh install and everything at stock, have you tried bumping your conroe to something betwean 2.8 and 3.2? Im going to try and record performance at stock, 2.8 and 3.0/3.2. null_
Hell yeah. Thanks a lot for this, we almost got the same except for the GFX card (8800) but that means I can probably run at the same res but both on Medium instead or perhaps if lucky enough exactly on the same settings on you! Not quite, 32bit Windows can only address 3.5gb of the 4GB. In Vista it will show the system as having 4GB but can only ever utilise 3.5GB. Vhajev
Well .. I'm currently experiencing the same as the OP. I was heavily worried about getting the game - but I pre-ordered it ... so what. I got it, installed SP3 after getting the error msg and was stunned by the perfomance and looks. I just tweaked a bit around and ran the benchmark. I'm sure I can even get higher FPS - but it already runs smoothly without major down pikes. I also have the 8800 GTX So here are the results in german (as already posted in another thread): Statistiken Durchschnittliche FPS: 48.47 Dauer: 37.08 Sek CPU-Auslastung: 87% Systemspeicher-Auslastung: 95% Videospeicher-Auslastung: 92% Grafikeinstellungen Videomodus: 1152 x 864 (60 Hz) Texturenqualität: Hoch <- Max Renderqualität: Sehr hoch <- Max Sichtdistanz: 25 <- didn't try to set it higher - don't see much popping things around Detaildistanz: 37 Hardware Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 Grafikkarte: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX Video-Driver Version: 180.48 Soundkarte: C-Media Wave Device Intel Pentium III Xeon-Prozessor <- Intel Core 2 Duo E8500

If you have 4gb and a decent PCU go for Vista 64bit, you will gain performance, under 4gb you wont notice a thing. I have plenty of games that use 4GB ram today, and some of them are about a year old lol, just becaue you don't play games that don't use 4GB ram doesn't mean they dont exist ! It's a well known fact amongst hardcore gamers, I actualy updated early and now have 6GB (I will test if any games use it) but in 3 months a game called Operation Flashpoint 2 will really start putting it to the test. I aim to get some screenies today, if I can get these dodgy cut scenes working first.

GingerlyPocus™
Wise words, great post. I was getting terrible performance on lower settings with higher specs than OPs, however I'm in the process now of reverting back to 32-bit XP from Vista, hopefully I'll get better performance on a clean re-install.
